Let's say mr. x went straight with his portfolio and his BA to company Y and was hired on the spot, working himself to the spot of art director and recently lost his job.

Now mr. X had never to compete in the "real jungle" outside of corporate world. He's confident in the quality of his work, but he doesn't know where to start.
Make a blog? Make a tumblr? How do you even get people to SEE your stuff.
Do people even like stuff that's NOT porn?
>>
>>2397805
A Tumblr/Deviantart would be a good place to begin. Though, platforms like Twitter or Instagram might give you more attention in the short-term.

There's also no promise that people will see your stuff. Using lots of hashtags should help.
>>
>>2397831
Wait... people now upload their stuff to twitter as well?
Oh god. When I started deviantart was the new hip thing for teens.
>>
>>2397805
start with fake fans then try to get at least one gossipy fanatic. I mean those people who obsess and reblog like crazy. Those people, unfortunately, will be your heavier lifters in getting your work seen out there.

I'm not making this up. MIT did a study about influence on social networks and why certian things seem commonly accepted when they have no reason to be.
>>
>>2397831
Is Twitter and Instagram actually effective in getting you followers? I know friends who have immensely popular Tumblrs but their follower ratio on Twitter is pathetic. So I just assumed that unless you're a big named artist, it doesn't do much for you.
>>
>>2398096
In my experience you're right. My ratio is 2:3. But you can at least use twitter to promote your tumblr some more. Also I've seen people make fanart for immensely popular twitters. That will almost always get them promoted at least. If you're okay with sucking up to people casually then twitter can be a good secondary thing.

>only 90 followers on Twitter
>only 1 follower on tumblr, but I have no idea how tumblr even really works

I don't know how to get noticed. I made one tweet that got over 500 likes because it was a dumb gif I made, but the rest of my stuff struggles to get more than 2 likes.

The thing is I really want to make a webcomic and do commissions and shit, but if no one ever sees it then I'm kinda wasting my time and energy.
>>
>>2398515
I know that feel,
how did you go about getting followers on twitter? Is it similar to instagram/tumblr where you just hashtag your work and it'll show in the search?
>>
>>2398515
>The thing is I really want to make a webcomic and do commissions and shit, but if no one ever sees it then I'm kinda wasting my time and energy.
If you feel confident and a strong desire to do it you should do it, if you are not sure about going forward with your idea, maybe reconsider and do something else until you feel it's right.
>>
>>2398551
I think my ideas are good, and I'm confident in my drawings. I just don't know how to get people to notice my shit.
>>
You might try youtube too... if you can do sped up videos of you drawing.
>>
>>2398572
How about posting a link?

If you don't bring it up in conversations people won't notice it.

I like the fact that it's basically canon.

Post frequently on tumblr and tag your shit. It's not hard to get 1000+ followers there
>>
>>2400848
Not op but honestly I've been having a hard time gaining followers there
I know my art is shit but then i see even worse artists get a base
what am i doing wrong?
>>
>>2401048
hmm the quality of art only really matters (in terms of getting followers) if you're posting original illustrations. You could try drawing fanart for a series you like, do a series of themed works, or post some gag comics. It's going to be a crap shoot, but if you don't have patience for social media and blogging for a good while, it's gonna be tough forever.
>>
>>2399321
>>2398276
Doesn't seem that bad, I don't know much about cartooning but I like it.
>>
>>2400848
>It's not hard to get 1000+ followers there
If you draw portraits/figures/fanart maybe. If you paint landscapes and environments no one gives a fuck unless you're actually a god.
>>
>>2402315
What are you expecting to gain from cultivating a tumblr following for your landscape paintings? Seriously, what are you expecting will happen?
>>
>>2402339
That's a good point honestly. I mean, its not like I've really tried that hard to cultivate an audience, and in the end I don't really care that much. It would just be a nice thing to have some followers I guess.
>>
Instagram: All of my sketches and WIPs go here. Great place for that stuff. People love WIP shots for unknown reasons here.

Tumblr/Pixiv: Fanart. "But I don't want to do fanart!" Me fucking neither, homie. I don't even like the shit I draw, but it gets me followers.

deviantArt is dying so I don't even bother with that anymore.

>Tumblr/Pixiv: Fanart. "But I don't want to do fanart!" Me fucking neither, homie. I don't even like the shit I draw, but it gets me followers.

good advice, everytime I've posted fanart to tumblr I've gotten a massive influx of likes/reblogs.

Being absurdly good is not even a guarantee of anything there.

I don't really like doing fanart but you can't deny its effectiveness. Also doing animations even if its just slightly animated is a big eye catcher. Combine animation and fanart and the reblogs/favs/likes just roll in.
>>
>>2401817
ok just checking
thanks
>>
As a cartoonist I've found the one and only way to get any kind of viewership on Tumblr from scratch and relatively quickly, is fanart of currently popular things. This makes your name pop up in searches so it doesn't matter if it's completely soulless.

Of all the people who'll look at it and like it (quality doesn't matter), you'll get a few followers. These followers will quickly leave when they see your original content, but a few will like it and they'll stay.

So keep a steady flow of pandering fanart alongside the stuff that you really like drawing. The fanart doesn't have to be good, just make it eye-catching and brightly colored.

If you become a art director your work and the contacts you made along the road there should be enough to get hired again just by getting refered.

Unless mr X did a shit job or it was a mickey mouse gig.

I did one Pokemon picture recently and it got me like, 60 followers in the course of a month. It's affected my original content like ratio by like, .01% but still.

I ain't gonna shove them away and will take advantage of that system but it does feel slightly upsetting that they only followed me for that one shitty Pokemon pic.
>>
>>2402575
firez?

Do people really draw and post fanart of things they don't like to get followers? How long can one keep that up??
>>
>>2402983
Yes.
As long as they want to keep those followers or until a new flavor of the month pops up.
>>
>>2402839
>it does feel slightly upsetting that they only followed me for that one shitty Pokemon pic.
It's fucking soul crushing

Why would you draw fanart that you don't want to draw just for watchers/followers? Publicity for commissions or just stroking your e-peen?
>>
>>2407167
That just means your skill level sucks or your work is generic. Plenty of artists out there can get views on their original/non-ip art. You get views on fanart because it has a built in base that'll like, favo or reblog anything no matter how shit it is. Just look at DA.

If you people want your original work to get attention you need to have great quality work or grind it out for years and years with lower quality stuff.

>>2407602
My statement also sorta relates to this, big fanbase numbers don't necessarily translate to anything more than private commission work. (which mostly pays shit.) Bigger companies and more wealthy clients care about quality, tumblr fags will reblog anything. Another reason to not waste the time unless you actually like drawing it, not sure I've ever heard of an artists going "pro" because they get shit tons of likes with crap art.

>That just means your skill level sucks or your work is generic.
Except my comic is doing great everywhere else?

It's just luck. Tumblr is pretty shitty if you don't have 6,000+ followers.
>>
>>2407656
Perhaps you're too stupid to understand. The link you provided doesn't disprove my point. My statement was if you have mediocre art just having a bunch of tumblr normies reblogging you won't get you work. This guy hired these people because he liked what they were doing, you still have to impress the art director who finds what you're posting, they don't care how many reblogs you have if the work is crap.

If you have decent enough work to get contacted from reblogs then you should have no problem getting fans thus making this thread pointless. Nothing I said was wrong, you're just too dumb to understand and you badly want it to be the case that having shit work but posting it around can get you jobs so you don't have to actually work hard to get better.
>>
Any traditional painters want to talk about this? Since nobody responded in the Instagram thread.

There are tags like 'artistsofinstagram/tumblr' which still feel applicable but I can't exactly do fanart.
I mean I could, but whilst that flies for an illustrator for a painter that loses you some srs fine art cred.

I see instagram really loves paintings photographed next to the brushes, and paintings of eyes. But painting just eyes is so pathetic.
