I like people looking at my work. I'm accomplished and talented. BUT I'd simply say 'I'd rather not show everyone. They're personal and not for everyone to see.' Then I'd weather whatever criticism I'd see on their faces or that they voiced, because I'm a man. Fuck them.
Also, one instructor from art school opined that creative works that aren't shown to anyone are akin to masturbation, something you do on your own to feel good. You gotta share that shit at some point, if not your sketches, than some finished works.

Learning to deny people can be genuinely difficult depending on your upbringing, but it's still something you should learn to do. It can be damaging if you can't.
People aren't entitled to your art. If you don't feel comfortable showing people, tell them you don't feel comfortable. Or tell them it's private. Or a thousand other things. You don't even HAVE to make things up.
Well, that's not true. You might genuinely be living in a shitty environment where denying people will get you genuine shit. In which case, hide your sketchbooks as best you can, and my sympathies.

Saying "it's just for me" is a defence mechanism , so you don't have to admit that you care about your art (since that makes you vulnerable). If you really only did art for yourself then you wouldn't care either way, and you also probably wouldn't have made this thread.
But, if you grit you teeth and show them; if let yourself be emotionally invested then you'll improve as a result. It gives you short-term goals. Saying "but it's all about the journey" is for people who are already confident artists.
I understand that this can damage your motivation, but isolation can so exactly the same.

I just warn them that I draw weird shit and blatantly imply there's porn, it's not a big deal because I was dumb enough to forget to put it away in the first place.
