>>
>>2397799
The background works to prioritize the figure. There are many ways you can do this. For example, you can create a value contrast. Right now, the figure is mainly midtones, so perhaps the background can be much darker or lighter, to make the figure pop.

Thanks!

I'm no expert but sometimes I do small thumbnails, sometimes I work in black in white first, It's very important that you try out various approaches to the same problem and see what gives you the best result.

Through a lot of trial and error I came to some conclusions:
1. use references but don't rely too heavily on them (your painterly instict gives you much more freedom); use large brushstrokes first
2. don't work on one area or one zoom level for too long as your eyes will get used to something and overlook potential mistakes (I sometimes use a timer set at 2 min intervals)
3. take your time when completing a painting...there are always things to improve...and even after you post your work don't be afraid to make corrections
4. be inspired by other artists' work and keep these references handy
5. use atmospheric perspective and try to introduce shadows for interest
6. work on more than one painting
7. use color balance to make colors relate to each other

These are just a few tips...but most importantly is to find a way that works best for you. Experimentation is key.

Well if that is yours I'd say buy and read Color & Light by James Gurney and then Framed Ink to learn about composition, which is extremely important for landscapes.

Then about rendering I use a both the brush and the mixer brush (which I use a lot less, just for specific areas), and I use a workflow very similar to this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntL3HpjYHe0

It's very short but you'll find it really really useful, watch where he paints and where he blends, try to mimic his technique, he explains it better than I ever could.
>>
>>2398227
Thank you senpai, will do.

Framed Ink is really impressive.
I thought Gurney was a little too basic, like reading pop science, but I'll try to give it another go.

Thanks again!

ok i get this gamut triangle thing. I need to put those primaries and create mixtures. But what to mix them with ? one primary with second primary ? then the result of the mixture mix with what ?

and how do i extend those mixtures in 4 different values ? by adding to those mixtures black ? im confused im doing it digitaly.

Digitally it's easier, use Coloorus if you're not using it, it's totally worth 11 bucks.

If you're not using it, go to adobe kuler webpage, look it up and then use a color scheme you like (use the triad mode to make color gamut more intuitive, since each of the colors you pick will eventually turn into your subjective primaries).

Then tweak each color until you get the primaries you like and that's almost it, just mix them to create 3 subjective secondaries like in your picture, and up their value adding white and down by adding black, do this with the color selecting tool, not actually mixing with your brush.

Now you have 6 colors and like 4 steps of value for each, this is more than enough for any painting, you can blend and paint with low opacity but always remember to come back to those colors and pick them using the color picker to keep your saturation levels in the painting where you want them to be.,if you never pick them your painting will start to lose saturation very fast due to constant mixing.

One think I liked about that book was the muddy colors part, read it, it's basically using muddy colors for most of the painting and then give dat saturation to the focal elements.

https://color.adobe.com/

I don't know what the fuck I just wrote it's late af, bye!
>>
>>2398392
Im using manga studio and i have color wheel that is a triangle.

I found this site tho http://www.livepaintinglessons.com/gamutmask.php

>Then tweak each color until you get the primaries you like and that's almost it

dont i get the primaries i want by just making the shape on a gamut color wheel and its corners being the primaries ?
> do this with the color selecting tool, not actually mixing with your brush
i dont understand :(. How am i supposed to mix those primaries without brush ? thats the thing I use to mix !

Your life drawing stuff is really really good but whenever you draw from imagination your proportions start getting all over the place. This is nice and all, but she looks like she has no skull and that other anon was right about the horns not being symmetrical. Horns don't really have to be symmetrical but in case you did want symmetry you missed the mark a bit. I'm not sure how you could go about fixing that other than maybe when you draw from imagination still keep some similar references on hand just to double check things until you've really got it.

The forms are really inconsistent at the bottom pot and around the stand. I sometimes catch myself having this problem if I've been working on something for a long time, but something that helped me was stepping back and looking with fresh eyes.
>>
>>2398944
Aliasing wasn't your problem, you problem is carelessly putting down lines over and over eachother, chicken-scratching, and drawing static lines that flatten the forms. Also you've "outlined" everything to be darker at the edges, which flattens it even more.
>>
>>2397618
that's a good idea!! not sure why i haven't been doing that already, but i'll definitely give it a shot. and i use an opaque flat brush for everything except the reflected light and the texture. for things like these i'll typically kick the opacity down to 30 or 40 and colour pick the background for the reflected light, then colour pick the result and set it back to 100%

I don't really know what you mean but I think you're talking about the sharpness that gives it a kind of "crisp". Usually, when I scale my artworks down to a viewing size, Photoshop applies some kind of sharpen filter to the image. That might be it

It was a pretty fast redline so all I really did was move things.
The main problem i saw was that the neck to chin portion didn't have much depth. To fix that, think about your contour lines and how the head is a box with depth. I saw your angle from the shoulders and eyes and used that as a mean to make the box for the head (i also used it to move the left breast slightly up).
I know its messy, but by the vertical line along the shoulder to the hair, I hope you can see that a lot of depth was added just by shifting the head right a bit. Hopefully the picture will be able to show you little bit better then i can explain.
Pretty good for a first post! Lines are clean and maybe in the future think about some variation, but if you have any questions, ask away
>>
>>2399226
Thanks for the help! I imagine her looking more forward, but at a slight angle, but I'll keep working on this. I should probably look at a reference to fix up the position.

Not bad, anon. Really all I did was push values and fix the minor scale problem with the lightest light.
Everything was pretty good, and Im guessing you did that just pretty quick or you would've put in more detail. I not then I guess now you can see where you can improve.
>>
>>2399258
not OP, but can I ask why the values should be exaggerated at the bottom instead of being true to ref? honestly curious about the thought process
>>
>>2399262
Well when i said exaggerated, I really meant pushed because if you look at the OP, the bottom section of the pot is almost one flat value.
When looking at the reference, it can be hard to see the very small changes in value, so what i really meant was to try to find those differences and go through with them.
I think that in the OP's case the values could be pushed and not necessarily that all values should always be pushed.

First, try putting your arms in the same positions based on the shoulder placements. Completely unnatural feeling, right? Both shoulders should be feeding in somewhere in between where both of them lie. The left arm is too short, the left hand is too large and doesn't taper into the distance, it just kinda "exists" in the wrong space. This makes the illusion of fore-shortening completely lost. Add in the fact that you're trying to show more of the hand than you need to. Its unnecessary. Details will be hidden behind details in front.

Despite it being a fantastical being, the way the neck feeds into the chest cavity is off. It's not a combination of cervine anatomy (or... is it a horse now? I dunno if the shift was intentional) and human anatomy. It's made-up, entirely. When you're looking at what you're doing, bring your eyes to every element as you go. You'll be able to pick apart the way the neck muscles, the trapezius, the clavicle and the delts are not interacting in any rational way.

The breasts are too high on the chest cavity. The attempt at showing the curvature of the spine was... okay. You've got the right idea, but you're not feeling the motions properly and it just looks like symbol and memory drawing.

The pelvis has little to no bend at all, only the rotation against the z-axis, which isn't translating the idea of sitting down. The pubis and genitals is entirely symbol and memory. They don't look like that, trust me. The left leg isn't feeding into the hips properly. Both legs are too small lengthwise, but the right leg is the worst offender. The way the viewers eyes are supposed to move across the image suggests to them that it's stumpy, from the upper leg and definitely the lower leg. You also need to STUDY skeletal, muscle, and dermis relations. That right lower leg and foot is completely symbols. Every aspect. Study.

I meant x-axis.

I think the main things I see right off of the bat is that his right arm and leg seem very flat.
With his right thigh and knee already in place, it makes sense for the bottom part of the leg to swing towards us. It looks forced the way it is now.
The perspective on his axe seems off and is really stiff. Also, it doesn't really match inprportion with the axe in the dragon(?)'s head.

This isn't how to picture is actually set up, but I moved stuff around so it's easier to see stuff.

I have NO idea how to draw an arm going back behind a person, and how clothing would look like that. I've tried looking everywhere for some reference or model I could use, but I couldn't find anything.

What exactly should I search for, or are there specific places I can go to find more obscure positions?

I want to get better at more dynamic stuff, but how can you do it if you can't even visualize it in the first place?
Same with clothes blowing in the wind; I don't know what they would look like in the first place. It's mostly clothes I have a really tough time with.

I really, really want to get better at this (I've been trying to work more on proportions and hands and I think I'm improving a tiny bit), but I can only use myself as a reference for so much. Where can I go to be able to visualize the kinds of poses I want to do, especially when it comes to clothes? I really need some guidance
>>
>>2399740
in my opinion it's too simple and doesn't really lead to that phrase very well. i think you are on to something but it needs something less abstract which better demonstrates the phrase.
you mean like "it's the thought that counts", as in the thought behind an action is more important than the action right? an idea could be, perhaps, illustrating a person who is thinking about performing a virtuous deed which involves him needing to count. or, the same thing but with the ironic side of that phrase in which someone has done something bad while thinking they are doing good. that's the first thing that comes to my mind if i try thinking about illustrating that kind of double entendre. there's probably more clever ways though. either way, i think that the thought bubble indicating the "counting thought" needs to be incorporated into a more solid context, with more connections to that phrase, for it to become reasonably apparent.

i see what you are getting at, but to stay true to a literal interpretation of a thought as a character and it counting in it's head adding a human that is thinking the thought that is counting is... it get's complicated.

Off the top of my head the questions that need to be answered to write that joke would be something like this

Who would think a thought that is counting?
Why would a thought have to count?

On some level I think it's important that I take ideas further, and that I really squeeze every last drop of humor out of every idea in the english language, but I also think there is some merit in taking a piecemeal approach.

I think of it as building a visual library of jokes, and the more simple concepts I come up with the easier it will be to combine them into more complicated concepts down the line ( right now I usually have 3 moving parts maximum, I could see getting one with 4, 5, or 6 taking a lot of years of doing this).

That being said I think you're right it is too abstracted in it's current form and probably needs at least one more solid "level" to it.

Doing sketch as always.
Overusing simplified shapes is my worst habit. ( especially hands and feet )
It can be look nice, but not quite accurate.
My overall style is not about precision, rather... windswept feeling. ( hard to describe )

I've started making comics because it's my ultimate goal, And I painstakingly found out, that my ordinary sketch is no way near the style that comics demands. It just look messy.
So my current goal is to develop clear, understandable art style. It will be hard thanks to my short attention span, but there's no way around. I guess.

If there's someone who suffered similar problem, is there something i must bear in mind?

>but I can only use myself as a reference for so much
Evidently you aren't doing it enough. Use a large mirror, or set up a camera on a timer to help you. Or get a friend or family member to strike the pose for you. There's no reason for you to not have access to an arm going back behind a person.

Chances are you need to construct more if you're having trouble. Simplify the torso and the parts of the arm into boxes or cylinders. I'd go with boxes whenever possible to easily denote 3 axes.

Draw through the form of the torso to place the shoulder correctly. Use basic perspective measuring to place the elbow at roughly the midpoint of the arm. Once the construction is good, make sure you follow it accurately. Don't start winging things by drawing parts in views you're already comfortable with.

As for cloth, if you can't wing it using your constructed framework for the arm, then you'll have to use reference. Again, the best references are the ones you take that are specific to your needs, instead of searching around for something specific that you might not ever find.

one thing that can help I think is if you tried to us a different value range in different areas. think about the value range of the image as a whole as opposed to using the same range in every local area of the image. if that makes sense.

the brightest value in one local area can be darker than the brightest value in a different area, if that makes sense.
