Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up( or do what am i your mom?).

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.

→ → → → Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 → → → → → → → →

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless. (hint: post something against the rules if you want to be banned)

when painting digitally, how would i go about selecting a canvas size and aspect ratio? i usually just start excessively big and then crop till it fits but it usually messes up the composition.

also are there any sort of practice drills/exercises analogous to figure and gesture drawing when it comes to foreshortening/drawing in perspective? i want to start learning perspective so i can finally start the scenes in my head but i every time i buckle down to practice i have no idea where to start.
>>
>>2396629
your first problem can be solved by using thumbnails to plan your compositions before hand. the actual canvas size doesn't really matter unless you're sending it out to print or have some other purpose where size and dpi matters.

Good job on torso, face is symbol drawing and the legs/pelvis are fucked. I can see what you were trying to do with the balance/pelvis tilt thing but you seem to just go off the idea that there is a standing leg and don't actually understand (c wat i did there) the mechanics.

Also stick to greys for now since you got a pretty good grasp on shadow but are not ready for color yet, at least if you wanna do values and tone seperately as you do now
>>
>>2397246
whoa great, thx mate
>>
>>2397235
Besides anatomy foot/leg are just outright too small compared to the other
>>
>>2397235
See, you're whining about people telling you to do construction and that you want to get the outline right and the truth (as you will learn through Vilppu) is that outlines are simply there to contain the forms of a figure.

Ergo the outline will never be right unless you (a) learn to measure and anally observe (b) trace or (c) learn the construction

If you wanna be a little bitch and go through (a) just grind Bert Dodson or even Betty Memewards. If you wanna learn have to draw properly, you'll need (c) which is what everyone is telling you to do and you're too much of a fucking lazy slob to do. So whatever the ball's in your court now, what's it gonna be?
>>
>>2397067
>>2397251
Also where you lose confidence in your own lines is a good pointer to where your anatomical deficits are (inb4 everywhere)

>>
>>2397412
They have advanced knowledge of the forms of the body.

They don't need to draw the spheres and the boxes because drawing a box and a sphere is a tool and not a golden method. Once you have enough expertise on constructing the human body you'll know its outline from any perspective, but until then you'll have to learn the form and draw your boxes.

Is tracing people a good way to get better at anatomy?

I don't usually trace, but I'm doing it digitally to learn how to draw specific things, but was wondering if that would be a good way to understand drawing bodies.

sorry for posting twice I saw this thread after i posted in the other thread
>>
>>2397874
I don't know but you will learn alot more if you don't trace because you have to force yourself look out for shapes, forms and proportions. To know how to see is just as important as to know how to draw.
>>
>>2397874
You may end up learning some shapes here and there, but unless you really think hard when you're drawing you will never understand the underlying structure on people.

You're much better off trying to look at a person and try their skeleton if you're going to draw on top of them.
>>
>>2397874
Doing it to get a feel for the forms does help. Just don't leave any traced lines in your work, it looks jarring.
>>
>>2397908
what are traced lines? I'm pretty much doing it as an exercise

>>2397905
So if I'm tracing I should try and draw their skeletons? Or when drawing a person imagine their skeletons?

You need to work on your basic line control. Draw lots of cirle and ellipse in one stroke to get a feeling for curves.
>>
>>2398648
Could you elaborate on that? Should I practice making the lines meet? Or should I just draw circular shapes? Should I do my best to draw exact circles?

Is it just that I can't draw lines as they are supposed to be? Is drawing circles really the way to practice that? I feel like I've spent hours trying to draw circles well.

You're using too many short overlapping strokes where one well placed line would be sufficient.

You don't have to draw perfect circle. Draw some circlular shapes but do it fast and fluently. Also try to control your line. Draw a symmetrical vase with only 3 lines or something like that. Put some time into it and it will help you in the long run, when it comes to setting highlights on hair or drawing womens body.

Make your lights lighter and darks darker. You should exaggerate not limit lighting, if you look at top left and the photo reference you can clearly see that the dark parts in the photo are significantly darker and the light is significantly lighter. Look at the shadow in the middle of the rock. As well as it being darker in the reference, it also has a crisp sharp edge. Your shadow is messy around the edges which is true for a lot of your edges. Rocks are hard and angular, so you want to emphasise that, not limit it. If you make sure your edges hard sharp your rock will look "rockier". I'd say you need to focus on making the outlines and the main lines that define the rock in 3d space clear as your first priority. (just look at your construction in the bottom left - it looks like a stack of books or garbage- rocks don't sag! Use straighter and longer lines in your construction, and focus on 3D shape not detail)
