So Andrew Loomis's figure drawing book just wasn't doing it for me as I need more anatomy reference in the book so is this one any good?

It's an ongoing meme that Loomis is some sort of demigod when it comes to drawing.

He isnt, he is mediocre at best and you should look for other books.

>It's an ongoing meme that Loomis is some sort of demigod when it comes to drawing.

I rarely see people hype up Loomis' actual drawing ability. I don't even often see people tout Loomis as the best learning material. It's suggested because his method is simple and intuitive for beginners. It makes sense, it covers the bases beginners need to cover, and it is a more convenient recommendation than "go read 'other books'" for someone starting out. Some resources are more detailed and useful for intermediates but are confusing with someone who has no baseline, it isn't useful for someone already trying to do that first hurdle.

Besides, what the fuck use is your advice compared to someone going "Loomis"?
Telling someone to read Loomis at least gives them a direction. Telling someone "look for other books" is flat out worthless.

It's a good anatomy book, just not the best for beginners just starting out.

funny, after a month of waiting, this book can be bought again on amazon today.
>>

Loomis is entry level
Hampton is middle-level
Bridgman is top-level (even tho he leaves out the erector spinae)

Spend time with them in that order.

That book more just translates anatomy into simpler shapes and forms. If you're brand new to studying anatomy, you'll probably want a good, more detailed, anatomy book on the side to be able to make real use of Hampton's.

Pic related is a wonderful, thorough anatomy book. It also translates everything into simple shapes, but not in anywhere near as much detail on that point as Hampton's - that balance is sort of inversed, so they complement each other well. One to learn the mechanics and complexity, the other to simplify that information into something manageable and bring it to life.
>>
Fuck all of your Villpus, Loomis, Hamptons and Bridgemans.
This combines all of them:

Can confirm that this is not the same book.
Makes me wonder if I could make a translation of it (as a hobby), but wonder if that would be of any benefit to you.

Oh, I haven't checked it thoroughly. They are different books, and I've got the other russian either. Plus they are written by different authors, which I had not noticed.

I'm the anon you replied to. I come from Brigdman and I have never really liked Loomis 'cause his books have that kind of 50's advertisement art in mind.

The approach in Hampton's book is similar to Bridgman's, focused on construction and how things work mechanically, very picture-based. I think it's a very good book if you like that hands-on approach where there's a lot of explanatory pictures of joints and stuff.
