Actually you are the one being pretentious. There is not only one correct way, but there are absolutely wrong ways to hold a pen. Having a appropriate grip for the tool you are using is of outmost importance if you want to work long hours with maximum accuracy.

You tell Marty Friedman that, 10/10 say his picking hand is absolutely wrong/garbage, and still, he is a god tier guitar player. He said he picks that way because in the beginning, thats what was confortable for him.
