Start by looking at pictures of giraffes.

It wouldn't require any special study, just the usual fundamentals. Check the sticky and the beginners thread.
And this painting is done with soft pastels. Though I wouldn't recommend leaping into colour of any kind before getting very comfortable with basic drawing fundamentals. Working with charcoal (pic related) might be a good in-between medium to work with as a beginner, since it's physically similar to pastels (but a shitload cheaper) and will allow you to get familiar with the fundamentals before complicating things with colour.
