of course not, look at her leg (top right). look at an actual leg and the amount of mass it has behind. Youre not building out of form. although your perspective is good for someone of your level.\

>>2391723
According to the theory of not even doing form, that means you should have equal difficulty on every part, however, the head is much more fucked than the rest. Which means you viewed the head as a head. If you dont want that to happen. Look at your negative space. Theres nothing to say.
From the study thread, how are my forms?

Slacking off is a slippery slope
>>2391913
Thank you kind sir, I'm not that guy but you just inspired me into another 3 hour session of drawing boxes.
>>2391913
Yeah, I usually get in about anywhere from a half hour to 2 hours a day.
>>2391917
As long as it's drawing while actively thinking about it, I wouldn't worry about x time per day. If you're zoning out trying to just draw what you see, 2 hours of that is worthless vs drawing a jacket for 15 minutes and trying to understand the folds, structure, underlying form, etc.
>>2391915
Don't thank me you fuck, Thank yourself for believing in yourself to fucking do it.
You'll get fucking bored if you draw fucking boxes for 3 hours, so try mixing it the fuck up instead of bitching about how fucking boring it is (because I know a bitch like you will).
Just for you anon, I pulled together some easy stuff to practice that isn't a fucking basic box. You'll be thanking yourself for not being a bitch and trying something new.
Some face studies. The rightmost guy's face anatomy is fucked, but anything else?
Sorry for the repost- and thanks to the anon who replied in the last thread- but hoping for some critique to help point me in the right direction.
Used a picture from here as a reference and pretty new to the whole drawing caper. Only really done Keys to Drawing at this point.
>>2391922
Even if figuring out boxes was boring it's not really supposed to be fun, that's not the point. I've been doing 3 hours per day of whatever I'm studying (I guess 4 sometimes), so god damn if I'm not going to draw some boxes.

Dumbass. I know you're just a troll regardless but I want you to know you're an idiot.
Is drawing from pictures still considered observational drawing?
>>2391815
From an artistic standpoint it's not great, but as someone who knows what a brachiopod is it gets the point across. Coloring in the inside surfaces might help make it clearer what's happening tho.
>>2391815
>>2392009
Also, putting the relaxed and contracted stage of each muscle immediately next to each other would also clarify what you're trying to show. Maybe add some arrows demonstrating which way the shell is moving and which way the muscle is contracting.
As for the concavity of the outer shell, shading in the concave part should get the point across.

So that you can shit on me regardless of the quality? So that you can continue to fuck up redlines anyways? You wouldn't understand, either way, because you're a fucking train wreck.
If only one hour of your day is spent drawing, I'm pretty sure at LEAST twice that amount of time is spent making shitty, unhelpful redlines and trying to get other people to waste their time listening to you, when you don't know what you're talking about in the first place.

>>2392623
You should be using a reference and attempting to accurately render what you've seen. I can tell you have an idea of what you're supposed to be doing, but you need experience rendering real things before you can jump into something imaginary. You cannot draw or paint something you don't have experience drawing and painting accurately. Anyone who draws or paints something accurately from imagination is drawing upon a large well of observational experience due to use of reference.
There are a number of other problems, but I don't think they should be addressed with this picture. Try doing a grayscale painting of an actual cherry (I'm assuming this is a cherry). Draw or paint it as it appears, in the environment it's in. Don't put any imaginary elements in, don't use colour.
Find a picture of a cherry or whatever on google, set it to gray if it isn't, and spend a good long time on it. Measure more than you want to. Don't draw or paint anything differently than it actually appears.
>>2392647
Ban evading gives mods the right to ban him on sight for his name though.
Plus due to how the rules are made you can get banned for everything. I've been banned from /a/ for critiquing (a genuine critique with advice and a redline) in a drawthread.

So is ctrl+Paint a decent learning aid?
also, they say to hold the pencil to the side, and draw from the shoulder. But my drawings look like garbage when i do that. What do?
How is this? First try at value-painting
>>2392735
Im using it, I think its really good. Drawing from the shoulder is for smoother lines, I dont think people use it for details, you can use your wrist there. Your drawings probably look bad because you have never practices it - neither had I.
There was a video of some guy on youtube with exercises for the shoulder - basically, draw a lot of straight lines, and then try to draw directly on top of them, starting and stopping the same place - all using your shoulder. Also, do a lot of circles. If you do that enough, doing lines or circles without the shoulder will become weird.
>>2392750
Work on your edges, it's blurry as shit. You want to use a harder brush.
>>2392750
it would help if you learned how to draw and be able to see the forms and shapes of the values :u
practice: put a layer over the original picture, then draw SIMPLE SHAPES (4 sides max) of a value.
>>2392760
harder brushes won't solve the problem. right now you're guessing or not even recognizing the shapes of color. this will at least force you to see what you should be seeing.
plus, make your values more extreme. I don't see any true black or true white. don't be afraid to use it.
Does anyone know how to practice perspective? I know about 1/2/3 point perspective and the book in the sticky, but how do I apply it? I never draw perspective lines because I can never plan that far ahead, should I start doing that or what?
>>2392895
But how do you make value shapes when so much is gradient?
>pic related
Also, I can only draw okay in certain perspectives and when I do deviate, I end up tweaking and tweaking until it ends up back into one of my comfortable perspectives. Should I go back and read some loomis "fun with pencil" or re read "perspective made easy" and do more of its excercises?
I'm having trouble sketching out short/chubby girls' lower legs. Any tips?
>>2393077

Here is some drawing test I found following a link in the sticky... thought I give it a try and see what you guys think
>>2391431
Here's a question I'm sure you get all the time...
In my efforts to learn how to draw, I realize how little I really know about art.
I'm not picking up those shitty learn manga in 2 weeks books, so I'm wondering if anyone on this thread can tell me how to pickup (or what are) the fundamentals of art.
>>2393098

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piKV5nXL-C4
>>2392799
abstract anon your stuff always reminds me of SCP stuff (scp-wiki.net)
>>2393096
It's not a test, it's an exercise, and you did it fully and one hundred percent wrong.
Do it again, DO NOT think of the image as a portrait, look at the lines and how they correspond to each other in 2D space, copy those lines. Abstract the figure and only think of lines.
Also do the full thing you bum
In any case there are better exercises to do in Keys to Drawing.
Just starting here, I bought some pencils and sketchbooks, sat down and getting ready to draw, but I'm already lost.
Should I do those upside-down shape drawing exercises for a few days/weeks, should I read from the Loomis books I downloaded to start? Should I go one drawabox?
I'm really not used to unstructured self-study and I'm not the most persistent of people, but I want to try and stick with this.
>>2393180

A few questions.
Is my construction in the second image passable?
How bad is it to actually use chicken scratch lines like in the right-most drawing? I feel comfortable doing this...
>>2393475
Getting good in art is about going out of your comfort zone so get that down.
As for your sketches, you need to study proportion and the five basic shapes.
Then move on to light and shadow.
Draw from life and go to drawabox.
Do all of the exercises and homework on the website.
Start with lesson 1 and follow the instructions.
Do not skip a single step.
Work hard.
>>2393475
youre drawing sausage people, try to obtain form by creating your figures out of simple shapes as opposed to using superposition of features. You have the same problem as the other anon i fought with higher as in your figures get stiffened by having a bad concept of mass in the low legs. Look at prokos gesture tutorials
>>2393475
>Is my construction in the second image passable?
If you want to draw marshmallow man porn. Probably.
Don't chicken scratch. It shows your lack of confidence. Get out off your comfort zone if you want to achieve something.
After getting the basics of drawing techniques down what should I do?
I'm aiming to draw people, and have the Loomis books, is that a good place to start?
>>2393496
The most important thing you'll get out of Loomis is a basic sense of proportion and structure imo, if you go for Loomis' Figure Drawing, you need to seek out gesture on your own to balance yourself. Vilppu and Hampton are the big names to look for in that regard.

be more confident in your lines. go wander around and learn the form. your next steps should be learning anatomy and how to express them in simple boxes/cylinders.

It's okay to work on anything. Don't be worried about wasting paper. Sketchbooks are for working, and SKETCHING
How do I improve on my gesture? Where is the secret of this technique? I feel it is wrong but I don't know where to see
>>2394420
Use less lines and be less scribbly. Try to be a little more deliberate with your lines. Watch the proko videos on gesture on youtube. He doesn't spazz out on a 30 second pose, rather he takes his time to actually take a good look at the model before he places a few well thoughtout lines. I actually learnt a lot by copying his 30 second gestures line for line. I paused the video when I had to. Then I drew along with Proko. Several dozen attempts at the same pose.
>>2394436
Thanks, will try. I watched hampton and he scribbled something like this but his were obviously better
>>2394444
Yeah there are many ways to do gesture. I think proko's approach with less lines might help you for now though. It really helped me a lot anyway.

>center of mass
These are 2d pictures there is no center of mass
>>2394524
>>2394524
OP was trying to depict 3d forms (AKA volume) through a 2d medium. Center of mass still applies here.
managed to draw a decent eye in between perspective sketches. what do i need to improve on
Is it normal for your hand to hurt after sketching for an hour? I'm afraid I might be doing something bad to my hand. It's kind of a stiff pain from my ring finger down to my wrist.
>>2394771
Definitely not normal. It's hard to say what exactly you're doing wrong without seeing you drawing, but there's probably some unnecessary tension somewhere in your hand. Try to relax.
>>2394771
go to the doctor anon
>>2394770
>Decent eye
>is drawing in symbols
Read the sticky, faggot

im not sure if this is bait.

i cry erytiem
I don't know if this beginner oder advance stuff. But can you tell me how to get that crisp contour like in the image from mrjack? I'm currently using a hard brush with 25% flow.
besides my persoective and details are ass. how do you get the look of a dark brown glass bottle? i can't figure out how to at least make it look like glass and i have 4 more to draw for my class over the next week. Any advice?
>>2391431
I have a problem with drawing boxes in a perspective. I know its the most basic thing so I want to get over it asap, do you have any tips?
Yeah, quick symbol drawing shit. But is my construction/setup at least somewhat right?
>>2394988
Sorry for confusion, those are not mine, they are from drawabox lessons and I want to achieve something like that. Are there any tips for it or i have to get good magically?
>>2394993
>Are there any tips for it or i have to get good magically?
No, but what specifically are you not getting. Explain boxes in perspective in words to yourself and that should be enough to understand, the rest is accurate guessing and good strokes. Which part are you unable to do?
if its just about the boxes and not about the learning you could always cheat and put the perspective points and get them perfectly.
>>2394995
>if its just about the boxes and not about the learning you could always cheat and put the perspective points and get them perfectly.
Thats kinda the issue, I dont want to cheat with perspective points but at the same time i want to get them right as soon as possible. I dont want to rush it, I just want to understand it in quick span of time
>>2395000
Lets say I want to draw a box here, it has to be straight to the viewer's eyes and I cant quite understand how should it be done.
>>2395000
why are perspective points cheating?
>>2395004
because the goal is to understand without having to get out your ruler 224 times per drawing.
So when I draw proportions for a human head, I first draw a circle and then I chop off the sides of the head equal to 2/3 the height of the circle. I'm sure this is common practice for everyone. However, what much do I cut out length-wise?
>>2394988
Eye is mine, left image is what i would like to get/imitate.
>>2394988
What am I apologizing for?
>>2395022
Determine the top of the head and the chin with two lines. halfway point is the eye line. Slightly above the eye line is the brow. half way between brow and chin is bottom of nose. Half way between bottom of nose and chin is bottom of bottom lip. Ears are between brow line and bottom of nose line. Width of head is equal to the distance between the top of the head and the bottom of the nose. There is one eye width of space between the eyes. The width of the head is 4-5 eyes.
>>2395017
you don't need to be strict and use a ruler for everything. setting a horizon and points is enough. there's something to be said for working smarter, not harder. if it helps you to understand, use it. fumbling around hoping to nail it is a waste of time.
>>2394968
Face is too long so is the distance between her nose and mouth. Eyes and ears are tilt although the head is pretty much straight up.
>>2395042
too long vertically? Yeah, same goes for the nose/mouth issue I havent focused on drawing ears correctly either so i def gotta work on that.
My main issue is, the jaw is cockeyed always, no matter what I do. How can I fix that? The more I try to fix it, the worse it gets. My angled lines can never mirror correctly.
I'm losing faith in my ability to improve. I tried doing this in 30 minutes and began to feel stressed, disappointed and uninterested by the end.
These last exercises in Keys to Drawing have been brutal. I'm supposed to be drawing free-hand to control hand in combination for this exercise.
Is my grip off? Why am I unable to properly scale what I'm seeing?
>>2395094
why are you trying to be an artist if you dont like drawing?
>>2395095
I'm frustrated a bit right now, sorry for my pessimism.
I want to eventually achieve the ability to draw beautiful girls and make cool looking sceneries like in those PC98 games.
>>2395105
>nose doesn't like drawing
that explains a lot
>>2395134
I used to like drawing, Anyone have the feeling.
Like you can remember the mental pathways used when you were bad at drawing and enjoying it. Ive never felt that way about anything else.
Thank god i dont draw though, gives me more time to write the sticky and wack off.
My drawings for the day. Pose reference from some screenshots of Cross Game.
stuff i've done today. trying to get a firmer grip on anatomy/bodies and line confidence (folds on drapes) critique please

>>2395244
you got folds in clothing and anatomy pretty well done. pose on left drawing is a bit stiff though due to right shoulder being a bit too far at viewer's left and arm being completely straight. otherwise nice
>>2395142
nose bro i want to finger you,

How much?

you still got symbol drawing, but less severe
work a bit on your lines
