Quick question

how does one start a patreon? I have some work but it's not good enough
if you want a patreon. what should you be doing/willing to do?

and also is there anyone of you on patreon now? id like to take a gander

Anyone else that isn't earning below $100?
>>
>>2376805
>above $100 patreon earnings
>/ic/
christ chan guy is king of hill of /ic/ when it comes to patreon
>>
Not OP but how does Patreon work? Do you have to fulfil what your supporter want and get paid for that? Or can you just do your shit and if people like it, they can support you, like subscribing on twitch?
>>
>>2376809
Nah, Incase used to post here and he makes almost 5000$ on patreon per month. Not sure if he still lurks though.
>>
>>2376809
he's your best bet to get info about earnings, ways to get supporters, etc.
there are people that posts regularly in /ic/ that got patreons, but you'll be surprised to know how much they make compared to christ chan guy.
or you can cross your fingers that someone relevant like akairiot, sakimi, kron or incase come into this thread and gib you some pointers
>>
>>2376817
I know. He literally posts one time like 4 years ago and then he fucked off. People with patreons got a gigantic following and theyre too busy living a normie life. 4chan is too much of a shitpost heaven for them to hang out here and give tips to be successful
>>
>>2376820
he used to post quite a bit in the porn threads actually and he did make a big post giving advice on patreon, back when he still only made like 1000$ a month. Just like with Teal and Tehmeh however, the jellyfags had to drive him away with constant shitposting.
>>
>>2376823
what did he say
>>
>>2376811
I'd like to know this too since I want to make a patreon so people can support me a lil bit while I study, paint etc
>>
Don't bother unless you have a ton of fans.
>>
>>2376847
This, I feel you need to have some sort of following before you start up a Patreon. If you don't, you just look desperate and greedy, and having a patreon making less than $15 seems shameful. If anything, it's just drive people away from your work.
>>
>>2376764

I know one secret that makes a big difference in terms of running a patreon, but I'm not sharing it because I want the shekels for myself.
>>
>>2376854
>have gigantic followers, 4 years in Da and 20k views
>make a patreon
>followers think youre greedy
>lose followers
>gets less than $6 per month, pity pledge
FUCKING UNFAIR SHIT
>>
>>2376854
>>2376864
work on your skill and gett better, people should understand you need food on the table and bills paid. and yes a large follow base is also good.
>>
>>2376864
it's your fault for not prepping your fans. you need spend months leading up to it by saying times are tough and you're struggling to make ends meet. let it become their idea that you should setup a patreon
>>
>>2376764
Is there even any demand for your work to begin with? If you're not to the point where people are asking for too many commissions for you to handle you'll never make a decent amount of money on Patreon.

With commissions people can at least get exactly what they want, on Patreon they have to love your content enough to just be happy with what you put out in general + some pledge goals.
>>
>>2376862
Your patreon please.
>>
>>2376864
Are you this guy?
https://www.patreon.com/nanoless?ty=h
Good stuff man you finally got double the pity pledge after a week. Told you posting on /ic/ is a good idea.
To those who dont know, this guy got $0 in his patreon until he posted it in /ic/ a week ago.
>>

>>
>>2376873

Wow nice.
>>
>>2376881
Skill /= yuge patreon
Marketing is more important, if youre a beginner make a patreon now and beg beg beg.
Already good? Make sure you're a legend like ben garrison or mullins then open a patreon.
>>
>>2376888
it's time for me to start begging then.
>>
>>2376873
well his draws are not bad, he needs more exposure
>>
>>2376820
I still browse /ic/ and post sometimes. I just don't identify myself unless I have a good reason to.

I don't think you can make a lot of money without already having a fanbase. It's a numbers game. If you have 100 fans, and you can get 1% of them to pay you 5$, you get 5$. If you have 10 000, you'll get 500$.

>>2376888
>>2376873
>>2376864

If you are that Nanoless guy, then I have one advice for you: Pick an angle for your patreon. You don't have enough fans/skill to just go "Support me for sketches and WIP's". I suggest some sort of audience participation, or doing porn. Your whole patreon idea is just too bland.

I don't really have much time to get into the details right now, but if anybody has questions about patreon, I can answer them later.
>>
>>2376934

holy cow you make almost 5k from patreon... that's insane man. jelly af. how long have you been in the trenches improving your work and building a fanbase? your work is killer, i'm sure you are aware of that.
>>
>>2376934

>>
>>2376934
what kind of angle you dipshit, you draw porn and holds them back, its that fuckign simple. your angle is just like shindol. youre a fucking jew that dont want to share shit in high demand with others.
we need someone with sfw content, not you, dumb ingrate
>>
>>2376939
7 years this march. I made almost no money for the first 5. But I was shit untill maybe last year.

>>2376959
I think you are confusing me with somebody. I post everything I do for free. Save for some concept design sketches for my webcomic Alfie, but honestly nobody gives a fuck about those anyway.
>>
I started getting more patrons just by writing "this art supported by X generous patrons on Patreon!" after every art post. Nanoless, try that. You probably have watchers who love your art, and you want to CONSTANTLY remind them (without bitching or begging) that they can lend you support and have an indirect hand in creating your artworks. I've never had anyone complain. (I have 1000 watchers and $60/month, very little Patreon-exclusive content).

By doing this, when you draw something good, you will notice pledges come in after you post it. Feels good.

I guess I can chime in as someone who is pledging to an artist on Patreon. He's currrently up to $942 for every pin-up or comic page.

The reason why I'm pledging towards him is because he's the only one who really produces the stuff that he does in the style that he does and I have been following his stuff for years and I'm happy to finally be able to support his production.

What does everyone think about the different billing cycles? Weekly vs Bi-Weekly vs Monthly vs Per Piece? I've seen each one work well for different artists.
>>
>>2377116
>>2377132
there are worse, more boring artists making bank so don't pretend it's just the art that's holding him back. if he networked and promoted properly he could be making a lot more
>>
>>2377151
Yeah but don't pretend that originality and artistic interpretation of a subject matter isn't important. It can literally decide whether an audience cares about your piece or not, which ultimately leads to exposure and money, if they care.
>>
Looking for a poor artist that's accepting commissions on the cheap. We're taking Fiverr levels of cheap.
>>
Does anyone know if theres a way to separate your real name from Patreon? I haven't had a chance to look into it yet but I have a devout following of less than 1k people for some niche nsfw stuff, but I'm afraid of my name being attached to it...
>>
>>2377159
which don't matter if you never do anything to promote you work. sure, the cream will rise to the top but if all you do is setup a tumblr, upload a couple times a week and never interact with your fans or cross promote on other platforms then good luck gaining any followers.

instead of rolling the dice get out there and work for your work. in IT 85% of your success has nothing to do with your skill and I doubt art is any different
>>
>>2377149
I'd prefer a monthly campaign as to not squeeze my patrons too much. Unless if i make tutorials and is known for it, i'd opt out for a bi monthly. Its too late now though, since porn artists will never get to sakimi tier.

>>2377132
Pretty much it. Networking is not enough, you need to show some originality in your works otherwise people will accuse you of plagiarism.

is there anyone here who uses Patreon for nsfw art and has hit any roadbumps with that? i've been researching and found some issues where paypal payments are auto rejected for nsfw accounts, and i'm wondering how much that hurts funding since many people prefer to use paypal over a credit card. also trying to figure out how Sakimichan still appears in searches despite her nsfw content and doesn't appear to have payment issues with paypal (does she not have her account marked nsfw and patreon is letting her get away with it since she makes so much?)

doesn't work if commissions don't fit into your plan tho. personally i hate doing commissions: clients are fussy, you can't charge enough per hour to make any significant amount, you end up with a portfolio of badly designed furry OCs doing real fucked up fetish shit to each other. better to make stuff that you enjoy making and gain a following who are willing to pay less for it than spend time making one specialized thing that you hate doing and only one person will pay a mediocre amount for imo
>>

>>
>>2377564

Do they just like your art, or are they a fanbase? I think that's the big difference in whether a patreon is successful. People actually have to care about you as a person to want to give you money. It's more a cult of personality. You can build that off of just really good work, but it's still the celebrity that draws people in to appreciate it.

You can try it if you want anyways, there's no harm in it. For all I know you have some diehard fanbase of oil shieks.
>>
>>2377571
Maybe. Depends what kind of vidya you like.
>>2377632
I've had steady growth for the last three years and things seem to be picking up even more. I have to dwell on it more.
>>
>>2377698
You got a point there. I suppose I'm 50/50. There are people who are fans I suppose and there are those who are in it for the art. Although I haven't really made the effort to shove myself in front of my art, I always appreciate when artists keep their shit to themselves and let their work speak for itself. So I try to do the same.

>sell out

lol, no. People need money to survive. Period. I live at home with my parents rent-free and I still pay out roughly $600 a month in bills.

Food
Car Insurance
Internet
Gas
Phone
Mandatory Health Insurance (Thanks, Obama)
etc.

...and if you think that's bad, try being the parents of a real NEET (like I'm guessing yours are) who have to pay for all of that for themselves, plus rent, mortgage, utilities, and so on. You even said it yourself:

>But at the same time I need money for for meds and food so yeap

Wanting to be paid for your art is not being greedy or being a sell out you retarded cunt. Providing art is no different than providing any other paid service including being a doctor. That doctor used his skill to provide you with a diagnoses and a prescription because you couldn't do it yourself, in the same manner an artist might use their skill to provide a client with a custom piece of artwork because they couldn't do it themselves, and both deserve to be paid for their time accordingly.

The literal definition of being a professional is having a skill you're compensated for. Unless you think every single professional artist is selling out - in which case who gives a shit what you think - you need to reevaluate your life.

>sakimi

she basically just draws porn. I know it doesn't really matter when you make that much but ugh, what a sellout. Same with Zeronis
>>
>>2378425
Not just basically, but literally. She sells porn versions of many of her artworks, and stuff. You know, it's funny, hen I'm not looking at her stuff I always have this aesthetically good image of sakimichan because my imagination interprets her as a famous successful professional artist, and I'd swear people hate her for other reasons, but when I actually go back and look at her stuff I remember she really is pretty fucking awful.
>>
>>2378430
It's also her fans fault, they're just horny people that want to see nips and vagina to the point where they pay for it.

It's sorta like building your skill drawing faces and clothes, but everyone just wants to see naked bodies.
>>
>>2378418
fuck sake incase you got 5k already why are you still shilling
>>
I feel like all the "big" patreons are from people who got in it on the ground floor when it launched 2 years ago, and any new patreons that try to start now barely get any traction.
>>
>>2378436
So basically, people only have enough money to donate to one favorite person.
>>
>>2378436
ben garrison made his pattyay in october and already reached $600
>>
>>2378436
It's oversaturated for fanart illustrators because they are just trying to immitate Kron and Sakimi's success. They don't offer anything other than "hey give me money because I too draw fanart!"

For webcomic artists for example getting support isn't nearly as difficult if you have a fanbase, because your fans get something out of supporting you. They enjoy the end product you deliver and supporting the artist equals more of that product, faster and possibly in better quality. That's why Abbadon for example is already at over 2000$ per month and started his patreon just a few months ago.
>>
>>2378448
It's kinda weird though.

>be well known on youtube, sfw animations, barely anyone donates to patreon
>do NSFW animations
>patreon skyrockets
I really just wanna do fun animations, not porn anymore. Beggars cant be choosers i guess.

That, or they just have a lot of people who love their stuff. The Pit launched just a couple of months ago and he's making roughly 1k a page.
>>
>>2378449
I think people are much more likely to pay for art if they are going to use it for something other than just looking at it because it's pretty/amusing.

Education, games, fapping, etc.
>>
>>2378449
Should'a made a different identity, pen name
>>
>>2378448
If I start a patreon I want it to be for a webcomic but I don't know how to go about it. It takes time to draw the comic, time that I won't be doing commissions or other work and therefore not making money. I figure I need to draw some of it to get people interested first but I can't afford any lost income. I guess I'll just have to try and build up some money another way until I can coast a little.
>>
i donate about 60$ every month to patreons and they fall into these categories:
>great tutorials from someone i like (my favorite is kawacy)
>something i really like (a webcomic, a specific fetish porn)
>friends

And yeah i would never donate to someone who just throws up whatever fanart or porn they draw. i'm sorry but get in line - your content is all over tumblr, da, exhentai, etc.

How to get a good Patreon going on:

- Get a clean trace and a good female body knowledge and piece composition (feel free to copy someone and see what works for others, get those good poses from porn pictures as well). Start an alter-ego, you don't want your real identity to be known.

- Draw fetish porn and get an identity, and for that, you need a distinctive style and you might have to choose and be consistent to one or two fetishes only. I divide them into 3 categories of fanbase:
1 - Loli, incest (anime);
2 - Feet, dickgirls/traps, cartoons, furry, incest (westernized);
3 - Weird fetishes like feminization, sissy, vore, body expansion, fart, male pregnancy... you name it;

Fanbase 1: Biggest, but fans will not be very loyal to your trace and the competition is big. Your art level needs to be very high, and if you struck oil, it pays really good cash.

Fanbase 2: Relatively big and loyal fan base, they will cherish your drawings and signature, the art level necessary for success here is relatively high (or at least well polished), but nothing master-like (ex: Incase, Tekuho, jjfrenchie, Shadman, but high levels like Dmitry dominate the market and don't even need a patreon).

Fanbase 3: Small but the most loyal of them all (the weirder it is, the smaller the fanbase is, but a higher chance of each person signing on your Patreon), the competition here is almost 0, and you don't need a high art level at all (check /d/ or /aco/ sometime, and you will see how shit the artistic level is), but if you have good knowledge, they will really go crazy on your porn (most of the money is made on commissions here, but the monthly pay is good enough to focus time on it, but don't expect much).

- You need to get your name out there (this is the most important, and hardest part). Post your porn on FREE HENTAI SITES (according to the fetishes you chose), and keep on with a good frequency of at least 2~3 updates per week (it's a lot of porn there and you want to be seen on the fetish tag), you will have to start on your own (like you probably are right now). If you like the fetish you're drawing, it will help in this journey.
Examples of sites: gelbooru, xbooru, e621.net

- When you get a consistent "portfolio" on those sites, with an artist tag and a good number of "upvotes", it's the time to make a Patreon, and you start to put the link on your phone so people can go check it out.

- Don't forget to convince with your offers on the Patreon (like previews of works, full HD images, power to vote on which scratches gets to be drawn, a chance to make requests, and etc)
BE REASONABLE AND KEEP THE PRICES LOW. The first tier being 1R$ is mandatory, you can only make it 3R$ or 5R$ if you're confident that you're dominating a good niche. If you give good offers, you will grow faster, but show your art has value and be reasonable with your time.
Make good goals and start to seek to team up with other good artists too. Don't forget to make a work once and a while for free.

- Never stop studying and improving your traces and rendering, the better they get, the bigger the paycheck will be, you can count on that, just watch out for the uncanny valley.

There are guys doing the CRINGIEST ARTS EVER, very low frequency, and earning 500R$+ per month. Start now and get a good and big slice of the pie.

If you list that your patreon will have 18+ material at all, Patreon will not enable paypal as an option for you to receive payment. It's a programmed in barrier, not a matter of tricking paypal. And no you can't host adult material on your patreon without listing it as adult or patreon will get you instead. Supposedly they offer alternatives when you're setting up though.

I won't even say "post ur work" or "post ur patreon" because most faggots here simply don't, but did you literally make a patreon today and got to 50$? how did you promote it? did you have a previous following?
>>
>>2380288
I have a previous following i promoted it on my twitter of 600 followers. i do not have a deviantart and i dont tend to post my wip up, so that might be why? the idea of the patreon being exclusive stuff may have appealed to some.

i have made works in the past that i have charged for and my personal theory is people willing to pay money to see your art will keep doing it, and people who havent will not be so easy to persuade.

but again 50$ really isnt a lot so take the above at face value.

I don't know how it works. Basically they pledge the highest reward and then when they get charged it get's declined. So either t hey signed up with a empty visa giftcard or something like that. They are still able to download everything though.

You have to manually remove them at the ned of the month in your patron manager. It shows who actually paid and who was declined.

Look out for anyone that goes for top tier pledges.

Oh, and then those people will post your shit online so people can pirate it all. I can't believe people actually pirate my videos. Like... come the fuck on. I'm not rolling in money here. I don't even make enough to live. Every pledge or video bought from me is literally 1 meal I get to eat.

Can't you wait until their pledge goes through to deliver? Even if Patreon opens it up to people as soon as they pledge, can't you just wait to upload whatever it is until the next month? People tend to see that 3 dollars is way more than 1 dollar.
We always think that we will never miss one dollar, check any Patreon, when it gets around, at least 500 dollars are of 1 dollar pledge.

And those are people that wouldn't pay any other price at all, they just like the art and want to feel part of a special group, their 1 dollar pledge is one of the things that will help your Patreon get around (and for 1 dollar you can put a small thing, like being able to see a log of news, getting to see some sketches you will publish on the log, sneak peek of projects and things like that, but no involvement, that might even make them go up in the ladder of pledge).

I used to feel the same way, but people change when money gets involved. You can have a fanbase full of really cool people who are super supportive but if you even mention money in the wrong way they turn into harpies and tear you apart. So unfortunately even if you are the most chill genuine person with a fanbase who seems cool and like they really want to support you, you have to use some PR tactics when you talk about money, because people's brains just have a switch in their brain about this shit. You can do what most people do, and charge on a monthly basis (which is automated).
Or you can charge manually by making "paid posts". I use this method to do a bi-weekly thing. You can choose to send your Patrons "bundles" of everything you've drawn each time you charge them, or you can post a WIP whenever you feel like it.

It's all up to you. I was a piece of shit these past 2 weeks and didn't draw anything, so I chose to not charge my patrons for this upcoming cycle.

in fact I know a friend who runs a successful youtube channel with stick fight animations. the man found inspiration from Newgrounds in the early 2000's and now he loves every minute of his creative process. the guy has developed a very unique style and his fans appreciate him for it.

personally I am not going to lie to myself and not do what I find fun. what about you? I happen to come from a specific artistic background and you don't happen to be fond of it, and that's okay.

you do you anon, you do you...

i dunno man. shitloads of people draw anime and believe me nobody loves spam.

you'll score $20 commissions every other week if you pander to anime and patreon's not going to help you get rich if you keep drawing weeabos

>i dunno man. shitloads of people draw anime and believe me nobody loves spam
it seems you don't comprehend the difference between knowledge and understanding. you believe that my work could be perceived as spam, and I say your are full of pessimistic trash that takes no interest in the value of others.

>patreon's not going to help you get rich
that was never my intention. I work a part time job to cover the bills while currently developing my webcomic, I only do fanart and pixel art on the side, this is not my focus but I find that fun.

I do this because I want to and because I want to share it. I'm still going to do it, and even if I fail then that's great. failure is a great tool for success.

if this is your point of view towards success then I wish you good luck because you are going to need it because you are going to end up alone.

It's not even close. And Kr0n has better camera. Why autists thinks they can RP as Kr0n? People can just ask you to post workspace photo or view from window, etc and you will forced to backpedalling. And >>2379508

People don't get charged immediately so they can basically sign up and get access to all the content in your Patreon posts immediately, and some people either use a fake card or cancel their pledge right before the pay period and they don't have to pay. So basically some people pledge and cancel, repledge and cancel, over and over every month to get your content for free. This is why many people send out their content via message/email after payments have been confirmed, so it's protected, and new sign ups can't access all the old content without paying anything.

$20 for someone who's hardly consistent, rarely interacts with followers, and often vanishes off the face of the internet for weeks at a time?
I'm aware of the hole I've dug for myself.

What sort of collab did you have in mind? My answer will probably be no, but I'm really curious.

/pol/ drawfag that triggered metric tonnes of liberal cuckholds with his christ chan comics. Wound up getting heavy following due to the intense butthurt he caused, exposed the mods as redditors because they banned his comics and any /pol/ related OC from being posted everywhere.
Try posting his comics on /pol/ and the libshits light up like wildfire.
