practice a lot, draw large, use smooth paper and make use of different strenght pencils to better control the value you put down. don't be a fucking idiot like me and use 4b pencils exclusively thinking you can control the value with drawing pressure. does not work.

Persistence is a good quality, but if you can tell it's going south it would be best to identify the problems and redraw them, rather than polish them. It's an easy trap to fall into.
>>2376772
Good advise. I didn't look at it as polishing a turd which is exactly what I did. I'll keep that in mind next time.

Jesus how many of you faggots have gone to art school/ currently studying? I'm 22 years old and self taught. Should I study or just give up? Figured since the majority of posts in this thread are realism id contribute with something that isn't.
>>2379503

God, you sound like a pretentious cunt

>>2385601
seriously mate, its a sketch page that is literally for penning out ideas quickly, now why would i go to the hastle of looking up an AKM and pretty much do a study of one when all i wanted to do was depict some russian looking fellow holding an AKM, you obviously knew it was a rifle, so my goal is complete, thats the meaning of a sketch.
if i was to do a study of the rifle thats another thing.
i just wanted to get the basic idea fro a future work quickly on paper.
key word = quickly.
you literal retard.
>>2385601
>post your work
>>2386226
Just go to one of your local figure drawing sessions (or all of them in my case haha) and fill pages in that sketch book of yours. If something is giving you a hard time like the head (look up how to's for it online and fill a few pages with the problem area. Then go back to the figure drawing studio and impliment what you learned. That's what I'm doing anyway.
>>2382496
If you sat in the chair. You were getting drawn.
>>2386706
>I've got you right where I want you sir
>>2386335
I was mostly poking fun, and the ref should have been more for the pose than the raifu. An accurate gesture/posture for the guy would be an improvement, at the cost of a few seconds to find some pic of a dude holding a gun, maybe on your phone or some other form of easy-access niggertech.
>>2386951
nigger, you are wrong.
post your work.
>inb4 merc
>>2386951
do you know what a "sketch" is.
its literally something you put no effort into to capture a potential idea, this is a sketchbook thread.
not a study thread.
>>2386978
Do you really want to get into a semantic argument over what it means to sketch? A rough drawing to convey an idea for later use doesn't have to be unreferenced, especially if you aren't referencing anything directly, but rather trying to distil something from reality for future use, ie how certain long firearms are held.
>>2386988
>getting this autistic about how a shitty sketch of a firearm should be held.
looks like that other anon is just better than you and you are jelly.
you should post your un-refed sketches and prove me wrong.
>>2386991
Why would "y'know this would have been nicer with a ref" be a statement of jealousy? Frankly your retarded backlash is the most autistic thing here.
It's been a while since i've sketched anything. This took me about 10m. One of the slave races from an project when I attended art school.
>>2386999
post. your. sketches.
>>2387159

>>2388701
if you dont mind anon what was your practice like to draw faces? im having troubles even after reading books on the subject. did you just grind out different studies for a while?
i really like how clean your lines are, too
>>2389348
Thanks, my friend
>>2389547
no, I have done only 2 studies in my life and they're not even finished, but they were not for practicing the head. Used the first tutorial from loomis, you know that ball that is cut up at the edge, center line is for eyebrows etc. I did not keep reading even though loomis tutorials are god tier because I wanted to build my own style of doing faces. kept drawing from imagination using that. this is mportant though, say, when you look at a face, ANALYZE it. don't just look at it, look at the wrinkles, from where they start to where they end, what shape does the undernose have, philtrum etc. That's what makes my style I think, very little lines that show much.
that's literally all I did, eveytime I saw a face, in a movies, life etc, I just picked up more and more details. kept drawing from imagination and from imagination only.
if you want to use refs you absolutely can, it's just that I wanted to be able to draw faces from imagination in any position. also, my faces only recently got good, or "better" at least, because I focused too much on anatomy.
pic related is last summer, I wasn't very good for womenly faces.
>>2390050
any time
>>2390192
>>2370075
I'm happy to see some real talent and skill in these threads.
As for me, just working on faces and practicing stylization at the same time.
Recent ones.
I keep telling myself that I should start drawing from imagination.
But I've became so comfortable with reference sketch so much.
Frustration comes soon after I start doing imagination.
I know it's because I'm not familiar with enough. but frustration is real.
Habit is devastating sometimes.
>>2393573

Do you purposely outline the shadow shapes instead of using value?
I see a lot of artists do that it it's really striking. I love it.
Keep it up.

Thank you. Compliment means a lot to me :)
I'm heavily interested in stylistic form and cartoonish feeling. So usually, value is not my concern. But It is important thing so I just put indication where's shadow and where's not.
how do you guys manage to zoom only when its needed ?
Ancient, cleaned up and isolated.
But still from my Sketchbook.
