Yeah, especially since you can make your characters stand in custom poses, then adjust camera the way you want, turn around on the go.
But then again you could just use a 3d model software.

From the way you make it out to be it seems to even be BETTER than 3D modeling programs, and it's free. Is there any reason to still use posing programs than this?

good thing about it is that you can undress your characters and dress them back on (although only with the clothes that are in the program itself)
you can also adjust weight so you can do a reference of a person and then add extra pounds and use it as another reference without changing any pose or detail of the character.
or adjust the age slider for faces to make them wrinkler.

Looks like any other chink, so yes.
Just went through some comments in the kotaku article and it seems like that it's pretty limited when it comes to male characters. that it's always bulky and muscular smt. OP could you check if it's possible to make a young male close to androgynous to test the limits of this tool?

You joke, but they have a point. You can get really technical with sliders and moving around body/facial features but it can be difficult to make something look truly unique because there are only a couple base meshes per class.
