What does /ic/ think of clutch pencils? I always see the Staedtler mars technico recommended, but what does it offer over other brands?

Mars Technicos are what I chose because they're sold everywhere. All the other brands I've seen are only available in specialty art stores.
Staedtler is a reliable brand. Them and Pentel are my two favorites.

I love the Koh-I-Noor Versatil 5347, I haven't really used a normal pencil since I got my first one.
I love how weighted it is, it just feels better. Only problem is with sharpening the leads.

Having only used the Mars technico a few times, I remember it being easy to use, but sometimes the metal grips would jam and the lead would slide out. I may have been unlucky though. Since then, I use a Faber Castell 4600 - like the one in the OP picture, but the cap has a sharpener built into it so you can grind the pencil back to full sharpness pretty easily. The only problem occurs when you put too much force into the sharpener and then lead gets ground into the cap. You can pick them up online, they are sold with refills, and in my opinion they work just as well as the technico. They use 2mm leads, and the leads come in all grades, in packs of 10. Be careful though, they're pretty brittle and can fracture inside the pen if you drop it.

Wrong. german lumos have a MADE IN GERMANY stamped on them. If you got a lumo without a country of origin stamp, its made in some embarrassing 3rd world shithole. Protip: the lead performance of german lumos is tombow tier and much much less prone to breaking. Also because of the strict quality control of the krauts, all german lumos lead are perfectly centered.

I use Rotring stuff with high quality led. Not because it's German or wellmade, but because my SO got it for me. Before I got a set of Rotring mechanicals (2mm, .7mm, .5mm) I just used a cheap Pentels or whatever I could find for cheap at the store.

OP, I really like my Rotrings. Staedletter is good too. Really it comes down to what YOU like in a product. Not what /ic/ tells you to buy. Blackwings are good as well, but spendy. I personally like anything with Mitsubishi lead in it.

OP I use a technico and a kohinoor 2mm the wierd problem the technico has is its looseness, especially with a fresh lead, like, the part you can't see has a bit of room to jiggle around, it makes it a little more prone to snapping and has some weird vibrations now and then but overall is fine, the koh i noor doesn't have the sharpener top but I use it for coloured leads anyway which are soft enough to 'sharpen' on paper in like 5 seconds, on the plus side it holds the lead much better since it has a nice tight barrell and works more like a well built mechanical pencil but for some reason they made it really short so I have to snap a sixth of the lead off just to get it all in at first, the kohinoor leads are cheap though so it's not a big deal, plus they have 6B and colors.

koh-i-noor is pretty standard. I use their stuff as well it's good. They have a bunch of different thicknesses as well so that's nice and you can get it pretty much anywhere here in yurops.

This. However, Germany has a certain reputation for producing quality goods. So if you are choosing between 2 products and one is made in germany and the other in china, you have a better chance of getting quality shit if you go with the german one (or at least that's the perception of many people I don't know if there are stats to back this up).
I use them because they are more convenient than pencils imho. I use kooh-i-noor. The teacher in my class always tells me it's much worse than pencils and eyes me down every time he sees me using it. Aren't the leads the same? I can't really tell the difference, I use koh-i-noor leads and my instructor usually uses koh-i-noor pencils that the school buys, seems to me it's the same kind of lead.

The flex nib is hard to get, except maybe if you have a chance on ebay. But I was reading the reviews from some users and they claim it's stiffer than the 2550. I'm tempted to drop 40 bucks on that nib tho
