I am tired of painting 2-4 coats to find a consistent flat color/value. Layer after layer to cover brushstrokes, pencil, smudges etc... is a time waster especially when I need to get it done. I've heard of enamel oil based One-shot paint for sign painters, but...

it's pricy and I don't care for anything that's not water based.

I tend to cut my paint white gesso as a shortcut. It still takes forever. Any tips or tricks on achieving solid opacity with colors/values quickly using a brush (including time to dry)?

Buy gouache or if you don't like how gouache handles but still want the opacity try "acrylic gouache"

This, though really the advantage of acrylics is quick drying and ability to layer a lot. You could try fluid acrylics, which seem to have better coverage or so I've heard.
