If you've been on this board for a while I think you should have noticed that the art which people believe to have 'god tier aesthetics' posted in this thread is very different from what you would get if you asked them to post art they like, so that shows that the two terms aren't synonymous as /ic/ is concerned. It really depends on how you see the relation between art and beauty man, which depends on how you answer the question of what constitutes good aesthetics and good art in the first place. I'd argue that something can have pleasing aesthetics without being good art and something can be good art without having pleasing aesthetics.

What I love about good movie backgrounds (Ghibli backgrounds in particular) is that they know their role as part of a greater whole. But what I meant in that post is that there is art I like for what it depicts, but that doesn't always mean it's depicted in a way that's exceptionally aesthetically pleasing.
Whereas, by contrast, I think a picture with really good aesthetics can be pleasing even if the subject matter isn't engaging. I don't particularly like fish but I really like the OP image, for example.

Im not that poster, and there really is no problem. But it really speaks to how distinct James Jean work is. Consider if artists in the music field did the same thing. Tons and tons of pop punk bands aping i dunno, greenday or something. It's not bad at all, but it's very hard to create and evolve a distinct voice (whether in music of in visual arts) that no one can call their own and yet imitates. It's a whole nother level above just being able to render gold and black fishes.
