I've noticed a new trend on /ic/, people are making threads about never 'making it'. These threads push the idea that its really difficult to make money from art, and this is true. A common counter argument to this is to suggest drawing porn. Is there any evidence that backs up this claim that it is easier to make money with porn commissions? Does anyone have any case studies? I find it hard to believe that anyone makes a decent living from it.

people suggest porn since there's a big market for it and it's easy to get in to. The pay ceiling is pretty low so its not great as a way to make a full living, but good for getting a bit of return for your work and getting a bit of experience with doing commissions for people

You need to understand that /ic/ is full of profoundly immature individuals who really don't know how the world of commercial illustration works. /ic/ is largely made up of sci-fi/fantasy/concept-art nerds who have no idea how to start monetizing their illustration skills. It doesn't help that the fantasy/sci-fi market is completely over-saturated with far more supply than there is demand, but /ic/ has such tunnel vision that they only see that industry as the only paying illustration industry.

Sure - it's tough. But it's not THAT hard to do. The biggest problem I think /ic/ has is not practicing their business and marketing as much as they practice their art. Step out of your comfort zone and reach out to art directors of business you want to work with.

there's so much demand for porn that you don't really have to market yourself for it, and there's a risk involved with getting doxxed and paypal closed. there's a lot more people competing for the low level fantasy illustration jobs because less risk and you can shill yourself everywhere. if your at an applibot level then it's different from what I can tell.

It depends on the porn... the more it deviates from the norm, the better the pay - furry custom characters, guro and vore tend to pay the best if you can stomach them (pun not intended)

(Brony/'clopper' crap pays rediculously well too, for now until the fad dies)

Only problem is theres only one way to get the rep needed for it - posing as 'one of them', be it in words or deed
