I mean, we can all agree that its a fun hobby, and we can all laugh at people who take it too seriously and waste their lives by treating the arts as if they were worth anything. But there are actually impressionable people browsing who are probably at the age where they are thinking about the direction of their lives.
I don't think I can live with myself knowing I was partly responsible for ruining some kids life by dooming him to a (what is laughably called) "career" in the arts

You can get a career in Art. It's not as easy as going to school for 4 years and getting a Mechanical Engineering degree, then getting a job soon after.
That doesn't mean options aren't there. Plenty of game companies. Plenty of companies like Disney/Dreamworks. Plenty of TV cartoon companies. Comic book companies. I'm only talking about studio work, not freelance.
Nobody is glorifying art as some amazing field. It's super fucking competitive and your prospects aren't great. But you have a shot if you take it seriously.
And get over yourself, you won't influence anyone. People weed each other out, they don't need anyone to weed them out. You really need an iron will to keep going in this industry. It's not for the meek.

Even though right now my life is absolute garbage, I can barely afford to eat or pay rent and think about killing myself every day, I know that if I make out of this hellhole, I'll have a huge leg up on all the 'serious job' people who will have a midlife crisis at 40 and realize they have essentially accomplished nothing their entire lifes, other than make some corporation money.
I would, at this point, still encourage people to pursue art as a career. In this economy creating your own job has more stability, opportunity and longevity than employment anyway. But I would tell them to get a useful BA first, and take their goddamn time with art. Maybe you could enter the market with a kickass folio in 2005 and start off making a humble living freelancing. in 2015 that is definitely not the case, you'll probably need a decade of self promotion and acquisition-strategy in order to build a solid professional network and client relationships. Then you can start off making those 25-30k, and branch out into your own projects to hopefully monetize more lushly or create sources of passive income (the combination of visuals + coding skills is INSANELY powerful, i encourage all of you to look into it)
The whole work visa thing is often tossed aside because most people on /ic/ seem to live in a america and don't need to fly there
But even so you don't need to get a degree because a professional career in art that requires you to move isn't worth the price you pay for the degree in terms of both chance of getting said job and overall quality of that job.
You're better off working at home selling your art on the internet. The future will probably be more like that anyway

I've got a friend who's doing just that, the son of a bitch lives alone in a studio apartment and gets more than enough to survive. He has his rent paid for, his electricity, internet, water, heat, etc. He can't buy much but he eats well and naturally receives charity from friends and family-he would actually be able to buy things easily if he wasn't a fucking pothead on top of everything else, he even got a free television and furniture at the start, lol. He will be taken care of for the rest of his life because we live in a society that is more than willing to burden (relatively) honest, hard working people with work-shy degenerate druggies like him rather than confront its problems or let people starve. Depends very much on the country, for the US you need to have a contract plus the company thats hiring you needs to prove that no one else that they can hire in the US can do your job, plus pay 5k USD to the government 3-5 months to see if you got lucky and got the work visa since too many people is applying not everyone gets in, even with the money paid and contract done.
