Can we just agree to stop this meme so people don't accidentally fall for it?

I mean, we can all agree that its a fun hobby, and we can all laugh at people who take it too seriously and waste their lives by treating the arts as if they were worth anything. But there are actually impressionable people browsing who are probably at the age where they are thinking about the direction of their lives.

I don't think I can live with myself knowing I was partly responsible for ruining some kids life by dooming him to a (what is laughably called) "career" in the arts

You can get a career in Art. It's not as easy as going to school for 4 years and getting a Mechanical Engineering degree, then getting a job soon after.

That doesn't mean options aren't there. Plenty of game companies. Plenty of companies like Disney/Dreamworks. Plenty of TV cartoon companies. Comic book companies. I'm only talking about studio work, not freelance.

Nobody is glorifying art as some amazing field. It's super fucking competitive and your prospects aren't great. But you have a shot if you take it seriously.

And get over yourself, you won't influence anyone. People weed each other out, they don't need anyone to weed them out. You really need an iron will to keep going in this industry. It's not for the meek.
>>
>>2358330

short term, you are right. long term you are not right.

Even though right now my life is absolute garbage, I can barely afford to eat or pay rent and think about killing myself every day, I know that if I make out of this hellhole, I'll have a huge leg up on all the 'serious job' people who will have a midlife crisis at 40 and realize they have essentially accomplished nothing their entire lifes, other than make some corporation money.

I would, at this point, still encourage people to pursue art as a career. In this economy creating your own job has more stability, opportunity and longevity than employment anyway. But I would tell them to get a useful BA first, and take their goddamn time with art. Maybe you could enter the market with a kickass folio in 2005 and start off making a humble living freelancing. in 2015 that is definitely not the case, you'll probably need a decade of self promotion and acquisition-strategy in order to build a solid professional network and client relationships. Then you can start off making those 25-30k, and branch out into your own projects to hopefully monetize more lushly or create sources of passive income (the combination of visuals + coding skills is INSANELY powerful, i encourage all of you to look into it)
>>
The whole work visa thing is often tossed aside because most people on /ic/ seem to live in a america and don't need to fly there

But even so you don't need to get a degree because a professional career in art that requires you to move isn't worth the price you pay for the degree in terms of both chance of getting said job and overall quality of that job.

You're better off working at home selling your art on the internet. The future will probably be more like that anyway

But
If you absolutely must work for ea and draw space marines for 20k and get fired in a year for no reason go get a degree

You can live illegally in your country of choice.

Also, places like Japan and SK give work Visas to artists if they can prove they make enough to sustain themselves.
>>
>>2358679
Also
>tfw Yurofag

I don't gotta worry bout that. Yurop is pretty sweet, and the Asian countries are bro tier when it comes to that. Worst comes to worst, I can just get the Visa as an English teacher.

Also, if it means so much to you anon, just pay for a false degree.

All you need is the useless sheet of paper, right anon?
>>
>>2358672
that's why I go to a cheap design school :P
>>
>>2358672
Only if you actually want to migrate to a country BEFORE you have a job offer, you idiot. If you already have a contract to show them that a company is willing to employ you for x amount of years, there is no problem getting a work visa whatsoever.
>>
>>2358710

And what happens after you're there for 5+ years, promotions coming up, but the shitty work visa you're on is running out and you HAVE TO GO BACK?

There is only 1 good work visa and it requires a fucking degree.
>>
>>2358726

After 5 years you get citizenship, no?

Either way I'm marrying some american broad if it means I can welfarebucks & chill 5 eva.

Degree not important, only skills important.
>>
>>2358769
You have to jump through a stupid amount of hoops but in some cases it's easier than actually getting a job, and I don't mean in terms of effort I mean in terms of you'll go through a shit ton of applications and interviews and probably get welfare long before you actually get hired somewhere and make it through the probation period. You can't chill on it though. Every fucking day you wonder how you're going to pay for this or that, and every few months they have some new trumped up bs hoops for you to jump through again to keep getting your measly couple hundred bucks each month. There's no such thing as welfare and chill.
>>
>>2358726
At that point, your company will take care of your visa, you dumb shit. Why on earth do you think you HAVE TO GO BACK just because your visa runs out if you are full time employed at a company and can just show your contract to extend your visa? Do you think a goddamn art degree has more pull in getting a long term work visa than a contract of employment? How fucking stupid are you, seriously?

I've got a friend who's doing just that, the son of a bitch lives alone in a studio apartment and gets more than enough to survive. He has his rent paid for, his electricity, internet, water, heat, etc. He can't buy much but he eats well and naturally receives charity from friends and family-he would actually be able to buy things easily if he wasn't a fucking pothead on top of everything else, he even got a free television and furniture at the start, lol. He will be taken care of for the rest of his life because we live in a society that is more than willing to burden (relatively) honest, hard working people with work-shy degenerate druggies like him rather than confront its problems or let people starve. Yeah, you have to jump through a lot of hoops but in the end I think hypothetically I'd rather do that than work if I wasn't prevented from doing that over ideological hangups and needing to help my family out.

>tfw despite having all the time in the world to "work on his music" like he said he was going to do he's only uploaded a single complete song to soundcloud in a year and it's way worse than his old stuff

Is there like a conveyor belt that drops retards off here whenever they start?
Six years and I still feel like you're all depressed, insecure bums no matter how much shit any of you go through. Either this place is filled to the brim and it's just hard to tell, or no matter what, you fucksticks can't learn even the simplest kinds of lessons life has to offer.

It bugs me more that those people identify--these spineless, unambitious whimps, as "artists."
These sophistry-diseased locusts that are utterly convinced they understand the world--these fucking 20-year-old college-educated idiot dipshits are swarming and destroying the thing I love.
Makes me wanna fucking gag.

Depends very much on the country, for the US you need to have a contract plus the company thats hiring you needs to prove that no one else that they can hire in the US can do your job, plus pay 5k USD to the government 3-5 months to see if you got lucky and got the work visa since too many people is applying not everyone gets in, even with the money paid and contract done.

Not stupid, just ignorant, and posts like those bring out these wonderful, enlightening answers. Assuming you are right, of course. :)

So a person can go on a temporary visa, work for a company in another country, and then his employment contract takes care of the rest? Is that how it works?

If you don't like it, go somewhere else.

Also >>2357548 is my thread, and if you actually read it you'd see that it's about the psychology of linking your self to your artwork and how it's counterproductive. I specifically said it wasn't a feels thread, and so there's a bunch of useful posts in there. Actual discussion, not just wallowing in feels.

So go fuck yourself. There's so many gems on this board and full professionals giving useful advice here and there, but if you believe you're better than everyone and the whole board is nothing but degenerate beginner smut artists then you'll get nothing out of any of it and you'd be better off elsewhere.

even developing countries like Thailand are strict about it now. A degree is becoming necessary for visas everywhere. If you are a Canadian and want to work for a US company, can you do it without a degree?

I know there are other visas that don't require a degree. Can you keep renewing them then apply for citizenship or something?
>>
>>2361043
because you're spending most of your energy on engineering and remaining only half-dedicated to your art.

to quote sam dillemans:
a part time painter is the worst. people who are partly something are the worst. you have to try to be whole. that demands sacrifice. the worst sacrifice is being half.

Why /ic/ sometimes is so obsessed with mechanical engineering? it's like the fifth time I read some anon name that degree.

Maybe if you live in USA it's more easy to get a art job without a degree because people there really appreciate a hard working or skillful person. But if you live in a shitty country that overrate a degree college , study an art career will help you a lot to get a job or teach.
