Can you believe how pleb they have become? Some guy went as far as to color a Nagel illustration in yellow to say it was the same style. I'm outraged.

You're wrong. It's a kung fury reference because the sequence with the flying sofa is a remake of the one with the flying countach.

The screenshot in the pic is a part where it's a vice city reference though. Some anons in /tv/ said it was a Miami Vice reference but it wasn't, although the style is similar because Vice City itself is a Miami Vice and Scarface tribute. There were lots of references in the couch gag.

This is the epitome of retardation though:

He's dead. And both Vice City and La-Z rider aren't based on his work.
Moonbeam City is a true bastardization though, you can tell they tried to mimic him but got it wrong. Seeing it triggers the uncanny valley syndrome on me.

It doesn't even belong on /tv/, I realized later that there was /co/.
That said, I'm not going back to /tv/ which is filled with plebs that can't into art. And since we're talking about Nagel, it doesn't belong in /co/ either.

It does, but it makes a sad bastardization of Nagel's work in the process. The Simpsons didn't do that because the drawing wasn't even inspired by Nagel's style. The way of drawing noses is a dead giveaway, and so is the shading style.

It doesn't at all, it's so ridiculous I cannot make a a sensible comparison with anything else.
I bet no one who worked on MC was able to keep a straight face for a whole minute.
It's not bastardizing Nagel's work, is completely and unapologetically ridiculizing it for the lulz.

I guess you're right, I haven't really watched it so I couldn't tell, I just took anon's word for it. It's a truly disgusting take on Nagel's work from what I've seen though. I mean look at those eyes, look at those explicit nose bones. Look at those gradients. Look at the reflections on the lips. The only thing they got right was the skin color because even the shades are too blueish. It's like they wanted to make it clear it was a Nagel reference but in the same way as a game maker puts an easter egg in a game. Even the GTA Vice City chick (look at >>2356044) is more similar to Nagel's work and they painted a natural skin color on her. But the nose is understated like in Nagel's work and the reflections are white lines. The whole pic doesn't have bullshit gradients except for the cup.

Wew, you're one sharp sighted lad. I hadn't noticed even when I watched the movie, although I immediately thought "Mortal Kombat". But unlike modern Mortal Kombat installments, it doesn't venture to use 3D angles. Truly amazing work.

Not airbrush
Nagel was a photographer before being a painter so he had life models at hand, he photographed them, traced the photo and painted over.
the secret to Nagel's aesthetic is a heavy use of negative space, most of his figures are pure contour. And using tertiary and quaternary colors, his color are very desaturated but they seem vivid because they're hues you're not used to see.
>>
>>2357931
Did he use a projector or something to trace them?
BTW what you said is correct, it's a very understated form of art. Even the contours themselves are simplified, he only draws the bare minimum to produce the shapes he wants. And he uses a lot of colors like mauve.
What kind of paint does one need to make a Nagel-style painting? The most challenging part is getting it to look flat when using a brush.
>>
>>2357952
I know he painted with acrylics, dunno about the brand or the preparation.
I think he trace straight from the photo to the paper since his illustration work is rather small.

just look at this thread patricknagel.lefora.com/topic/2926671/Process-the-nuts-and-bolts-of-Nagels-work
>>
>>2356087
>Trevor Something
I thought he was just the musician not the artist?
>>
>>2358053
his illustration work was small, but his painting got up to six feet. They were usually acrylic on canvas, but sometimes on board. A lot of his famous images are silkscreens, but he didn't make these himself, but sent off his paintings to be reproduced.

His workflow was thumbnail sketches of his concepts, then photo sessions of the model, then drawing from the photo, and enlarging the drawings onto the canvas. A lot of the drawings survive, so I'm guessing he used a projector.

Apparently his most used paint was payne's grey.

(all this is from the 1985 commemorative book, which has text from a younger artist who worked as Nagel's apprentice. I have a reprint in my basement).

>They were usually acrylic on canvas, but sometimes on board.
Didn't he favor board over canvas? I had read that here:

I guess I'll need a projector then.

Don't you notice the excessive detail? The noses are a dead giveaway of it. The gradients too, specially the non-flat reflections. Nagel's reflections where pure white, they didn't blend.
