Is it possible to git gud quickly if you're self taught? Like at the rate they pump out artists in fzd school? Obviously you'd have to put in an insane amount of time but can it be done? What exactly is the curriculum there and has anyone tried mirroring their teaching methods on their own?

you could never be as fast as someone getting one-to-one feedback from a professional, but feng says himself that you can easily get good if you're willing to put in the hours and know how to study right. I think his vids have a bit of info about the material they study

You can absolutely do it on your own. Expect it to take about twice as long as the full fzd training though, even if you put in equal hours. Upside is you save god knows how much fucking money. Downside is you miss out on profiting from connections (which only the top 10% of graduates every year do anyway, the school is said to be ultra competitive)

Imo self teaching is the way to go.

The problem with self teaching, as another anon has said, is the lack of feedback from a trusted source. If you have a teacher whose skills you admire you generally can take their advice, but when you're posting to places like /ic/ you get either no advice or lots of advice that's pretty often contradictory or given by people who might not be qualified to give it.

Someone with discipline can very much set their own curriculum or find one online to abide by, you can do the whole workload, the problem is mostly finding good feedback and correction. At the same time, it hones your ability to be self critical, but that comes slowly over time, as opposed to receiving it from someone who's already honed their skills of critiquing art by years of drawing and teaching.

On the bright side, it gives you some more flexibility to develop in the direction you want. This can be bad sometimes, obviously, if you ignore important elements and focus on 'muh style', but it can also help make sure you don't just fall into a sort of standard and similar look like certain classes/schools seem pump out.

It's statements like these why there's so much shit and fundamentally flawed art out there, 'muh style' and 'muh taste'.
Some people just seem unable to be properly self critical or direct their own study. They need someone to give them a push in the right direction.
