its BECAUSE your line are bad that they NEED to be thin. If you dont choose your lines you basically have multiple lines and your brain chooses the best one, this is the reason paper sketches look better than actually drawing. Choosing your lines lets you confront your mistakes

no shit as me bro, but Check proko's channel it will make the whole thing easier for you.
By the way how do i get this level?
>>
>>2341163
any how do i get to X level is useless. If you want to reach a certain level the steps you can take are infinite, but the steps that you should take are few and similar. If you draw long enough youll draw in a style that you like even more than this.

I think everything really comes back to learning form anatomy and gesture. You can learn to paint later on. Just keep drawing, in all likeliness youll never reach his level because you dont have the same amount of time to invest.

its always a trade off, yes you learn more from studies, but if one study means you dont want to draw for the rest of the day, its better to draw 20 animu girls.

When tilting or twisting the torso think of what is pulling, compressing, overlapping and from where this is all happening.

In order to help show a twist it is necessary to first establish the direction in which the major forms of the torso are facing in space. To simplify, use the box form to help you find the perspective and give orientation to what is in front and behind. Vilppu better demonstrates this process of thinking.

Just got an Intuos Medium (dream of my life, can't believe it's in my hands, feelings etcetera). Updated the drivers, set stuff uf, and Photoshop does this circle trail bullshit. I know it's been fixed before in threads here but I didn't bother remembering it back then, because I didn't have a tablet. What do?

Also how do I get used to a tablet? good ol' "draw a fuckton"? because I like that way, but there must be a smarter one.
>>
>>2341212

peter han exercises, check out his video on youtube. he has drills for drawing straight lines, curves, circles, etc.. its meant for pen and paper, but I used it to get used to my tablet, which is also an intuos medium.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk
>>
>>2341215
Man, I watched that video a while ago! now I'll put it in practice again then, thanks a lot!

And since we're at it, what's your experience with this beauty? anything I should keep in mind for the future? I was wondering about the nib, specifically, since it doesn't come with new ones (...I hope no Intuos Medium does, otherwise... fuck.) and, in my position, getting them will be harder and more expensive. Does the spaghetti thing actually work?
>>
>>2341215
You dumb ass nigga, he's talking about the spacing yo. Sheeit.

>>2341212
set your brush's spacing to something like .1-.3 that will fix the circle problem.
>>
>>2341225
OP was also asking about how one could get used to a tablet in the second paragraph.
>>
>>2341225
Worked wonders. Now I tried to download the Pressure Curve Tool from the sticky and it... neutralized the pressure sensitivity, apparently. I'll just re-install the drivers and see if it's alright tomorrow morning, maybe that'll also fix the "Drivers not found" window I kept getting when trying to open the properties, even after updating them it let me for a few minutes then the window came back.

A tablet is suffering. I least I don't have to worry about the brush thing.

The perspective is non-existant (the Lumberjack and the tree stump don't seem to be standing on the same ground plane).
Anatomy issues aside, though, your biggest problem here is that that pose doesn't look believable at all. It's awkward, off-balance and with a weird gesture.
Grab a stick or something and swing it around in a chopping motion. Then try to stand like the lumberjack in your drawing. Note the differences. Reference images are good too, but nothing beats actually acting out the pose with your own body.
>>
>>2341410
Just for the record, it's supposed to be like a running swing, so he's not actually standing. I've tried posing myself in the past
>>
>>2341434
>it's supposed to be like a running swing
Irrelevent. Watch any movie with knights and cavalry and you'll find there is not a single sword, axe or halberd being held like that either on foot or on horse.

If that's your idea of a natural pose I'll hazard you were that kid that ran like Naruto in middle school.

>>2341410 here.
I got that it was supposed to be a running swing and that he's supposed to be like this cool lumberjack that like chopped the tree with one hand while running. I totally understand what you were trying to do.
It's just that -and take no offense- you didn't do it well.
As I've said, the pose is awkward. He looks like he's falling down, the twist of his left hand and the position of the axe are wrong and his right hand and arm are doing god knows what.

Overwhelmed with the amount of material to study, I decided to pick art books and copy all illustrations provided, starting with Bridgman's constructive anatomy.
Will that help me establish at least a portion of the necessary visual library to progress to figure drawing and whatnot?

>>

>>
Anyone find a lot of art books not really helpful? I enjoyed some books however I only read like 10-20% of it. I feel like a lot of art books have a lot of unnecessary information.

I find stuff like pic related way more helpful and interesting as it focuses on one subject with diagrams and gets straight to the core parts. Of course they can't go into detail and you'll need to study/actually draw but I find videos also fill that niche to a degree too.

In Loomis' Fun with Pencil book, I still use the Ball and Plane method and I like how he shows different results if you try different stuff but I feel like his stuff has little direction, he shows you the finished product of a topic of study and then just tells you to try it out without further instruction.

I also found the potato head stuff at the beginning of the book dumb. He's teaching you how to draw highly stylized cartoons right off the bat without telling you how to form a basic head.
>>
Hey guys, I want to learn to draw (I'm really fucking horrible, I basically do not know anything) and from what I've gathered knowing the actual correct human anatomy to start is a must.

https://www.udemy.com/anatomy-for-figure-drawing-and-comics/

What about these tutorials? I'm pretty fucking adhd and following a course gets me in the right mood to start. Anyone has any video course to recommend otherwise?
>>
>>2342427
go read a book or watch a video, anatomy isn't worth much if you can't draw the figure.
>>
>>2342420
Well fun with penicl like the name says is centered around fun, and to get people excited to drawing.
>>
>>2342438
So... I should... learn how to draw figure? Don't you draw figure from... the anatomy? I'm actually confused here.
>>
>>2342446
It's stupid advice, disregard it

If you learn anatomy of course you'll always have good knowledge of proportions and correct positions of the body. Combined with some gesture drawing to get a feeling of movement and weight you'll quickly learn to recognize your mistakes and complete most poses you want
>>
>>2342451
I mostly want to draw M-MUH weeaboo garbage, but I recognize that fundamentals are really important. I'll do just that then.
>>
>>2342451
yeah and how are you gonna do anatomy if you don't even know how to construct the figure, do gesture drawing, know how to draw forms, proportions some basic perspective etc?

>>
>>2342464
are you retarded?

all those things go hand in hand with anatomy. do you really think that if you learned how to draw and understood the entire muscle mass and skeleton of a human body you wouldn't know how to construct a figure, wouldn't know proportions, wouldn't know how to draw forms?

my god

So I am currently reading the book "Drawing with the right side of the brain".
Pic related is the first face the autor wants you to draw with the learned abilities.
My question is, did I do anything wrong? Something I didn´t do good enough yet?
I think that I am drawing with the right side of my brain, but I don´t really feel it.
>>
>>2342710

Brotip: Distinction on the left and right side of the brain is pseudo-scientific, various areas of brain fire more during different things, but it's not left-right distinction and you are always using your whole brain unless you shitpost on /ic/ as I do this very moment.
Just do exercises, don't focus on text.
>>
>>2342710
not bad, looks like you're doing things properly. keep at it.
also this >>2342739
>>
>>2342739
I'm an idiot. I mean I don´t feel like I am drawing with the right side. I am just drawing. Looking at what I am drawing. I just know that I am not supposed to draw symbols. I also don´t know if there is a better way to learn how to draw than this book.
>>
>>2342778
Would like to know too if I should learn from the book or just draw what I want.

Just try over and over until you get a feeling for it. Just look at what you want to draw and look at your paper, look at the lines. Look at how big you draw each of them. I am a beginner like you, I try to explain as good as I can. Maybe someone else can help you more.
>>
Hi, I don't draw very often but I do a bit. Everywhere I read that adult humans are eight heads in proportion and teens around seven. What happens to me many times is that my drawings tend to hover around six heads (or six and a bit) and I read that six heads is for characters below ten years old. Ignoring the flaws that come from my lack of experience, many of my character drawings look pretty much like teens. Is there something inherently wrong with six heads proportion when drawing teens? Does it look okay to me because they're just standing, they're manga or because I am being indulgent with myself? Do they look wrong (proportionally speaking) to you?
Also, any recommendation for these specific cases?
Sorry for the quality of the pic

Is this good for a composition?
>>
>>2343025
women are around 7 at peak. only good looking perfect men are at 8.
You're drawing anime anyway, you can do 5 if you want.

you need to anti up from construction to form, your lack mass as a couple of key areas ( legs, neck) and you need to do some gesture since your poses are very stiff.
>>2343034
do you like it? compositions are very subjective. make sure to not go full black when you actually draw it though.
>>
>>2343043
Thank you very much.
About the lack of mass, is it an issue with the character on the left or does it apply to both?
>>
>tfw starting to use loomis methods subconsciously
its happening
>>
>>2343067
yeah it started to happen to me too. i practiced loomis heads on and off and never really liked it, but then much later found constructing them a lot easier, and found it easy to think of them that way
>>
>>2343067
>This is one of them. Actually this was the book Frazetta famously claimed to have gone through and copied the drawings in one night as a teen.

Damn, I'd love to hear that straight from the Frazetta's mouth. Considering how much faster I've gotten at drawing I think I might be able to do that as a challenge. I'm old as balls so it's not as impressive in that context, but it seems like it'd be a good exercise.
>>
>>2342930
If you notice you can't fit the entire picture, start over. There are many ways people can fit a picture, making mental notes of proportions, grids in your minds, etc.
>>
>>2343075

I think you missed your thread.
>>
>>2343075

>>
>>2342930
Drawing too small doesn't help either. Same advice applies in that you should start over if it's way too small.
>>
>>2343025
stop. drawing. anime
>>
>>2342930

Just measure a bit before you start. It'll get intuitive after a while, but to start you can go "this image is x many heads tall so I should keep that in mind when I draw the head."
if it still goes off the page even with you drawing the head measured (or whatever part of the body you choose to start with), you've been drawing all your stuff out of proportion anyway.

This is how you don't improve. You learn twice as much if you worked from a reference and did your own linework of a real person and tried to render real hair instead of 'rendering' a colouring in book for girls
>>
>>2343480

A part of the cranium is missing.
>>
>>2343485

You don't need to state the obvious, I normally do that. It's really not that I was "lazy", it's just that this is way more efficient then drawing multiple heads and different hair. Especially since I'd normally default to what's in my comfort zone and draw the hair that way. I could easily do my own linework, but that's obviously not the point of this exercise. I'd like to know how I did on this one before I move do doing something original.

All done in this finished style that looks completely different from the rest of the book's sketching.

Okay, just got my drawing tablet and I'm working on gestures.

How do I improve on gestures? Like the pictures I see here are very defined lines and curves, mine look like retarded robots even when I have enough time to add to the first lines they don't seem right.

I'm doing 90 second timers between pictures, should I be taking more time? How do I simplify the arms legs etc etc into 3 lines like I see a lot here?

Please note this is the first time using my tablet, and i'm just beggining as well. I've practiced for a few days on pen and paper.

When a line looks wrong and I can't instantly spot it, what I do is make a conscious effort to check its angle and it instantly shows where I made a mistake. Apply that to relationships between forms in space and you won't end up with an unfixable mess you've spent too much effort on.

Indeed, the line seems to imply an incorrect perspective. I was actually trying to simply show that the tilt of the head is wrong with the T-line (1 line from the keystone to the chin and the other line roughly indicating the eyebrows), rather than to indicate wrapping lines, but the result is fairly sloppy. I like the information in loomis' head and hands book but I feel like he never really tells the reader what exercises to do? Do I copy him? Do i try make my own version? A lot of his drawings appear in the book without much text to describe the details, like these skulls. He kinda just talks about them in general but never goes really in depth on how to draw it. Of course this information can be inferred by looking at the picture, such as the shape and general size of eye sockets, but I feel like text would be really helpful.

>20 hours of vilppu to watch through

if watching long ass videos isnt your cup of tea then don't. There's no point in binging on a long video and learning nothing

as for me I can't stand walls of text and 1 hour videos, that's just not how I learn. I learn best when the point is condensed into a short bite (Like a 5-10 minute video) so I can get the basic idea and then explore from there.

Is it ok to be off but (in my opinion) capture most of the gesture in a gesture drawing? The drawing on the right is shit, was kind of an odd pose but on the one on the left I realized the non-bent leg was too long and the head isn't at the right angle.

Didn't really want to spend ages fixing it as it's just for practice and I would have to erase and redraw a lot, it would just look messy.

Btw, even Sycra in his "how to draw" videos said that he watched stuff like vilppu on x1.5 and x1.75 speed because it takes ages for him to say anything.

The gestures don't need to be perfect, but usually if they're not accurate it should be because you pushed the pose further, not that you didn't push it far enough. Adding detail will usually stiffen it a little.
Also your gestures are following contours a bit much in my opinion. While there isn't necessarily a 'correct' way to do gesture as long as you capture the pose quickly, I'd suggest you try and focus more on finding lines of action and using c and s curves to your advantage.

I think you should focus on drawing the spine instead of the contours. You don't have to erase just get more paper.
