When drawing a cube in one point perspective, there must be a better system to draw in the back edge than "whatever looks right".

I have looked through a few books on perspective but cant find the answer. Is there some kind of precise formula that can be used?

there is and it's relative to the distance you are looking at the cube but that's more complex. In reality you really don't need a perfect cube everytime.

Define a station point first. From there you'll have your main vanishing point at the center of vision, but you can also find one or both 45 degree vanishing points using the station point. For a perfect square on the ground plane, a line that connects opposite corners will also intersect the horizon at that square's diagonal vanishing point. In the case of 1pp this is also the 45 degree vanishing point you found earlier.
