Solidly showing the effects of the gusts will sell what you're going for. Other than that, check out the "Vents" environment illustration by Noah Bradley. Also, try making the mountains at the same angle as the gusts. All the same direction if that makes sense

shuold carry over the blue shadows throughout a bit more, like arms/collarbones/rest of face/more throughout the hair, bc it's rly jarring especially on the lips. also the lips are just v dark in general
also i think shading on the side of the shirt (by the stripes) looks really great, and p nice elsewhere, but the lines between the boobs and on the stomach aren't great.

Define more clearly your cast shadows

Expand your range of values, for instance you could use darker tones on the exposed internals, create oclussion points where forms converge, etc...

You could blur the far details and/or define more the near side.

BTW are you eye balling the perspective? You should consider doing it more properly particularly for mechanical stuff.
>>
>>2325490
Thanks anon. Can you explain what you meant by where forms converge? Also I used guides for the big shapes and eyeballed the smaller things, which I find hard to do with perspective lines, especially with round things. Tips on that?

>>
>>2325549

i think introduction of some white to the smoke/steam would make it read clearer. what is the purpose of the smoke/steam exactly? i don't understand it

i'm liking what you're doing but i t hink your textures kind of compete with eachother. you have smoke, mountains, the red figure and what she's standing on. pick a focal point, which i'm going to assume is the red figure. knock back the mountains a bit. maybe lighten the thing she's standing on, introduction of the white to the smoke would help as well. it's also starting to feel a little cramped because of the smoke but that might just be a personal opinion.

i get the sense that you know how to render better than you do illustrating a story, which is fine but something to keep mindful of

oh for sure, I just mean like, in terms of rendering, i can make thumbnails look nice but start getting lost when it comes to putting texture onto different planes
>>
>>2325197
Dunno. I found it mostly generic and uninspiring. It feels like the true stars of the starwars series was the original actors and the model creators/animators from the first 3 movies. They were the ones who brought that universe to life. The rest have just been an attempt the conceptualize, streamline and profit from that success. They aren't added new stuff but just repeating the old stuff in a new wrapping.

Ah. Yeah I'm struggling with the same thing on a current piece at the moment. I like my idea, atmosphere, and composition... and everything is basically there... indicated... but refining things and adding detail keeps making it worse. In my case I think I just need to gather references and go back to simple line drawings to figure out what forms exactly I'm trying to render. Though another problem is the tendency to go too dark or light with details, adding too much contrast and breaking the value structure of my composition.

You can increase the sense of depth by adding shadows that depict the cavities formed by overlaps, changes of direction, etc...Said shadows will continue (depending on the light source ofc) and wrap around which will also reinforce the sense of form.

As for the perspective, I'm not so sure but maybe it looked weird because your vanishing points seem to be a bit too close to each other which could cause that the objects look diamond shaped, instead of seeming like they fit properly in a box.If you're having issues with round objects try to draw a box/plane and fit an ellipse before adding more details.

Probably very late, but I liked pic related that you posted a little while back a lot more. The shapes are more interesting, the composition had a clear focal point, and I liked the added ambiguity to the character with the red blobby trails behind/above. I also like venom and carnage a lot, so that might bias my perception of the piece.

Though it was a wip, the hierarchy of detail worked better. The focal point had the most attention, and everything that was background noise was omitted. I do generally like your work, but you render everything too uniformly IMO. Let less important areas be looser - use contrast in your rendering and brushwork to add focus. Uniform rendering and edgework feels very sterile, and gives the impression that you don't know where you want your audience to look.

Any advice on this in general?
I'm pretty new to writing my own characters, so even critique on better lore would be appreciated.
I'm finna add color too.

Title: Abraxas, the Fallen Sentinel

Lore: A Sentinel is tasked with guarding a specific place, his designation was the Gateway to Middle Earth. Abraxas watched upon the realm, above from the Heavens for centuries. Silently watching, never wavering from his post. As time flowed by, Abraxas eventually began to become envious of the freedom of the mortal races, freedom from the shackles binding him to Heaven's golden plane. So he chose to 'betray' the Holy Covenant, and sever his own Halo in two. Breaking the contract binding him to Heaven, allowing him to descend through the very gateway he protected for so long. Thus exiling him, bringing upon the title 'Fallen' as in, to Mortal Realms. over continuing to honor his codex from Heavens Divine Court.

Draw in the perspective you set up, and not willy nilly. Just look at the left arm of the dude (right side of image) extend its line and see how you missed the perspective. The same goes for the leg.

If it makes it any easier also draw a line that halves the cube thing you drew.

I've only used Moleskine, so I can't really tell you.
But I advise you to not buy too cheap paper, since it dramatically affect the result in watercolors (and also the brand of the colors).
It really is completely a different workflow and result if you paint with bad or good materials.
I'm also poor, so I have like, only 5 colors I really like, that sketchbook, and two sheets of Fabriano paper that I'm keeping for a special occasion.
This is the one I use, it is on discount right now and I strongly advise you to get it, it's top quality and for a good price. http://www.bookdepository.com/Moleskine-Pocket-Watercolour/9788883705601
(http://www.bookdepository.com/Moleskine-Large-Watercolour-Notebook/9788883705625
And this is the larger version, also in a decent price.)

Believe me, it's better to save money and buy better paper/colors than to buy cheaper materials that won't really help you much to use this medium properly.

Sorry for the long reply.

I was drawing distorted faces/bodies and I had a deviantart with them, yes!
I still do that, but I'm studying how to achieve a certain feel/look I want with this, so I'm not posting much of this stuff.
But that was like, in the start of last year, so if you saw it really a long time ago I don't think it was me.
>>
>>2326725
well i have the Sonnet 24 colour set which was surprisingly really cheap. so that makes me wonder whats the catch? The colours have a ton of pigmentin them, like they almost feel little too powerful.
Its hard to believe that they would be the same as the White Nights

>>2326738
Yes, that russian manufacturer puts really a lot of pigment and most of the times it looks really pure.
It having a lot of pigment strength is a sign of good quality. You can reduce the strength however and as much you want, but if the color pigment is crappy and weak by default, you can never really have intensity and brightness to your work.
I really don't know how it is cheap as it is! It is a great manufacturer, and that Sonnet set is a good thing to have.
As far as I know, White Nights is their top watercolor, Sonnet being the medium-level, so give it a try one day and compare.

I'm still trying to add the blobby bits to the current version but I'm having troubles.

I get that a lot - that I render too much, I'm aware of it I just need to figure out my own way rendering things to a degree and quality that I still enjoy but doesn't detract form the image.

Mountains don't help this image. The steam is violent and showcased a lot of motion then theres a serene environment in the back out of perspective. implying that the platform for mist is falling // off balance

Is he getting pushed off by pressure? You're rendering is good but if you start rendering too early you will end up in trouble wasting a lot of valueable time reversersing your decisions. Make it work as a simple thumbnail and commit to it, making no major changes. As it isn ow you are jumping around willy nilly. Lack of focus.

>>2325200
Already at this sstage, you can easily see that the mountain looks really off.

You could have the giant wolf a dark shadow in the night, it's eyes showing it's intention / hunger. Then put the shepherd infront of the sheep so we know what he is defending.

compositionally, I tried to contrast the diagonal of the distant rock formations with the dark stems rising from the lake (I added more after this initial picture).

I feel I failed to convey the distance from the figures and the rocks, they are supposed to be quite far from them but I feel it looks as if it is a paper mache. The best I could do was add smaller and smaller stems as the distance recedes since I don't know any other way of conveying this (more blurred maybe?).

All in all this is supposed to be one panel in a web comic/illustrated book Im working on so alot of the detail won't really be seen.

Ah okay this is better, I couldn't tell exactly what you meant, and at first I was picturing the boat and pirates' positions flip flopped to where you have them. I would put the foreground character even more extreme foreground, maybe so much so the hair is being cut off by the box, even. A Dutch angle is always a quick way to add visual interest. My real opinion is that this shot is pretty overused in a lot of things and I would actually look for a different way to stage it altogether, but that's not a crit that's just my two cents.
Also Ross who, like RubberRoss cuz I love him.
>>
>>2327254

Composition is definitely not my strong suit. However, since you said that this is overused, I wouldn't mind starting over from an entirely different angle. This didn't take that much time to do, so I'd rather do it right than polish a turd.

For this sort of thing, I'd recommend looking at some comic artists. For composition, I think I'd say Frank Quietly and Michael Golden have some of the best staging ever, Golden especially in his Jackie Chan books, and just generally anything from the golden age or Will Eisner type stuff. For lively crowds, and good composition too even, perhaps Blacksad? Seriously, some of the scenes in it just really blow me away.

First of all, this will be problem to you if you dont know the actual structure, the shape. You wont understand how the light bumbs / reflects. Your picture has several axes problem, but well, ok..

I dont have time to play with colors, so i just grab what you got there. Had to completly cover the hair, cause made me insanly confused all the time, i would make them totally different, but didn't want to mess up with your concept.

I picked the light side based on nose and darkest shadow... and btw you got the darkes shadow under the eyebrow yet everywhere misses. Make that right.

Still i think you should do some value studies (as i should)

Does it give the illusion of form or not. You clearly don't know anything about art other than buzzwords. "Eye trace". That pic was constructed in exactly the same way this one was.
>>
>>2327850
As you wish ;-)
Just let me explain:
1. he is drawing 2D... the object doesn't have any volume. In that case, trying to specific where the light bumps and where the shadow is, where are the light reflections is almost impossible.

2. Axis problems (sorry for misspell): The eyes are like front facing, the nose is out of the axis in 3/4 view, same for mouth. You can devide face when frontfacing to several axis which you can follow when turning. Here, the main axe doesnt change in perspective. Again, adds to hard part in shading, because the object doesn't make sense to what we understands.

3. Hair - doesnt work like that

This is a shit paintover. And you doesn't add anything genuine to help. The forms are all wrong in the original piece, you've not done anything to illustrate a light source other than draw an arrow. All you've done is scrawl more nasty black shadows everywhere that make no sense.

I get that you might not have time for a full paint over or just simply don't want to, your call. But don't just half-ass it and crap out a shit paintover which is pretty much as awful as the original. If you're going to give a paint over, put some effort into it or just don't bother.

This piece does needs someone to completely redoe it, to illustrate proper anatomy and how surfaces are illuminated/shadowed correctly.

It's a photostudy, I'm trying to learn to paint in color.

How does it look? Are there any good tips for making things a little less muddy besides 'use a hard brush'? Generally I think I'm fine getting hard edges around the exterior but most interior stuff looks fuzzy.

Any more specific advice on opacity and flow? Many of the brushes I use adjust opacity based on pressure, and as far as I can tell flow is a very similar concept as well.

Before worrying about light you need to have a good understanding of form and anatomy.

Feel free to ask about any corrections as it'd too much to go over everything.

If this is the ref then note that her leg looks like that cause the seat of the car leans downwardly.
In yours the position of her legs is going downward and looks too forced, like it's not resting on top of the other so she'd have to be making an effort to keep her leg raised like that.

Opacity affects the entire brushs transparency and therefore doesnt lead to good strokes when painting with small individual strokes right on top of one another. opacity is good for painting, but only if you use primarily for value placement since it affects the brushes transparency.

Flow is the brush itself with no transparency on it. To properly use flow, if youre using cs6 you want to go into transfer. enable flow control under flow jitter and set that to pen pressure.(you dont really want to change flow jitter or flow minimum, unless youre making fancy brushes) opacity control should be turn off. in later versions of ps the transfer is known as "other dynamics" and the stuff is still in there.

Also the flow minimum thing should be kept at 0 because it will vary the flow percentage depending on the main flow parameter in your main window, so flow and opacity should remain at 100%.

Should I keep and then work with this, or scrap this layer?

you are getting it, kill the hair, it misleads you and make you do shit on her face which shouldnt be there. The eyelids shine to much.

Yeah, I know the eyelids are too shiney xD They're also supposed to be darker in general. Maybe I should give a character description so people know what I am after? I have it on hand.

I am going to kill the hair now I think, haha.

Anon this is so much worse than before. Now she looks like she has scales, and I see you followed the unfortunate advice someone gave to shrink her body when it should've been larger if anything. Plus, shading with black really isn't good. It sucks that all this bad advice got to you before any good, I don't think this piece is salvageable, unless maybe you start back from the point where you first posted it. Either way your main problem is you're trying to paint without understanding light and shadow, color, anatomy, and how to convey form, and all of those are incredibly important with painting. Do whatever you're going to with this picture but I would strongly urge you to take to lineart for a long while after this and learn construction of simple shapes.

Thanks, I've been fiddling a bit with the flow slider at the top though I'll try to experiment with brushes as well. It definitely seems useful.
So far though, increasing flow just seems to give smoother blending and good transitions, but if my problem is muddy edges I'm not sure flow will help much in that department, unless I'm missing something.

god youre hopeless. if you dont understand how to use flow and opacity now, then youre fucked.

Sorry, I started using photoshop earlier this month. Can I suck your dick since you're a golden god of photoshop? Maybe some of your divinity will rub off on a mere mortal.

Ditch it anon, it's beyond help now, let it go and start a new piece, or go study some fundamentals.
