so urh, how do you guys use these things properly? do you have a sketchbook open in one hand whilst you read the book, or do you guys just read the whole thing then go off and do your thing?
>>
>>2325506
>use these things properly

As long as you make it a point to understand and practice the subject matter there is no way to improperly go about it.
>>
>>2325509
right, fair enough.
>>
>>2325506
A mix of both. Some concepts you can read up on without immediately drawing, some are better to put into practice immediately. You don't always have to draw simultaneously, you can also read and then review major key points through drawing like assignments. Use drawing books as textbooks, don't hesitate to experiment and do your own thing but come back to the reading material and make sure to check your work.

>>2326489
Try checking this one
http://www.parkablogs.com/content/anatomy-and-figure-drawing-books-artists
My personal recommendations (well VERY few because I haven't read many stuff about anatomy)
>Classic Human Anatomy: The Artist's Guide to Form, Function, and Movement by Valerie Winslow

>Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form by Elliot Goldfinger
^ Bit textbook-ish.

>Michael Hampton Figure Drawing

Or just check anatomy books available online and skim through them because we all have different preferences. Some like technical shit while others like simplified shit. Different tastes.

>>2325506
Well whatever suits your style in taking notes. There are different ways to do, bro.

A.) Write down what you understand from what you read then draw.. then go back to read it then draw, interact w/ it.

B.) Skim through the book, then reread the book thoroughly then read the book for 3rd time then that's when you do some exercises. Though take your time in understanding, remember that you memorize something doesn't mean you immediately get the hang of it. It takes time to understand it fully so always interact with the books.

C.) Or mix those styles up so do experiment to find your style! Don't stick to the rules too much or what I said. Like others said, don't be afraid to experiment. Remember, learning is much more fun than doing.

It's like doing research except you gotta do practical shit to understand shit.

One more tip:
Don't hoard too much artbooks. PDFs online are for checking purposes to see if it's worth buying.

If it becomes your fav shit, then you buy the physical copy so it's much easier to look up. Or if bigass physical shit ain't your style, then its cool cos you have diff preference.

What would be a good film concept art book?
Something with a lot of pencil/pen/marker process work. Digital is fine, but I'm tired of seeing a bunch of finished pieces.

I already took a first stab at mirroring VK to get those resources extricated from that godforsaken threading, but it's an unholy clusterfuck of mixed editions in every language under the sun.

Lots of series can only be pieced together half in japanese + half in english, or 1/3 japanese + 1/3 english + 1/3 russian, or the previous except for 1 outlier book in german...

Also my scraper ran amok and escaped the directory level it was on (i.e. started trying to download all of VK, and got a good ways there before I killed it with fire).

I'll fix the problem and take on dealing with that whole bidnis, but only if imma know anyone's gonna give a shit.

Will you guys actually use less-than-perfect scans of less-than-young-and-nubile-texts in less-than-brilliantly-comprehensible mixed foreign language editions?

Gonna haveta be more specific than that, since that name refers to more than one large-ass download and people always mislabel both (all?) of them.

>>2329803
New to the board, unfamiliar with its particular linking likes/dislikes. Better to err on the side of caution to keep posts sticking around.

That and trivially breaking URLs leads DMCA-bots astray without doing much / if anything to impair humans tryna get their pirate on.

There are so many books, it's kinda massive. I had planned to download all of them but gave up after a dozen of pages. I think some of us would definitely be interested in some sort of backup for all of these though, we never know when it'll all go down.

For a start I think it'd be a good idea to put the vk link in the OP for the next threads to make it available to more people.

You get a shit ton of references, in various poses, with some construction lines. Usually there's also a ref sheet that gives you their proportions in profile as well so you don't have to eyeball it.

<-- Basically, 100-200~ pages of this etc. as reference material

OK bros, im requesting for:
Big Bad World of Concept Art for Video Games: An Insider's Guide for Students
Does anyone have it or.. yeah just wanted to put it out here. Thanks in advance and I totally appreciate if someone being kind enough to share it cos I plan to buy that shit one day

>>2334147
depends on your preference for the way of approaching those elements....
Like FOR example,
Like How To Render - technical af but helpful shit
Color and Light - casual but focusing more on painting shit, so it's like straightforward tho occasionally gives technical info but less than How to Render

So it's totally up to you man, try checking those books out and see if it suits you. Some people learn differently.
Alternatively, the best way to learn rendering is to watch Youtube vids or get some vids from cg and do life studies shit on real life

>>2335513
thanks, stay cool

>>2335729
it has lots of good points.
>you get to see their workflow/creative processes. so you know how they approach the subject and bg, etc etc. helps to know how they created shit (inspirations and refs to create the world, char, backstories and shit) creative thinking solutions on those things
>you get alot of refs : style in lines and color, environment, character (diff poses and angles). also using the refs by dissecting their style
^ never ever copy their style EXACTLY because or else you might have no taste/substance in your personalized style just study how they did it and shit and mix your inspirations into your own style.

I'd suggest you check Skillful Huntsman, that's how they did. Behind the Pixels is good too. Big Bad World for concept art book seems promising..
Also, it's good ol' guide to create concept arts or studies to create final pieces.

>>2335828
it's on cgpeers tho wait for it to be back soon

I have Big Bad World but can't scan it at the moment. It's actually not that good. It shows what the job is about and it focuses a bit too much into what school to choose and how to develop a physical porfolio, which won't be of much use if you want to self-learn and develop an internet-based professional persona.

thanks for your review, bro! I see hmm, that's first critical review I read because in amazon it has mostly good reviews.

Tho the physical portfolio part sounds cool but i just realized now that i can always pick up some tips from internet and compile shit except it's gonna be long searchin'.

if you can't scan or not in mood to scan shit, it's cool! it's the thought that counts.

>>2334381
use movie screencaps or irl shit or google emotions or related to facial expressions. if you still want the book, just use it as a tool to understand not to rely too much on it.

How necessary is it to read books on drawing/painting/anatomy/composition? I've probably read like 15 at least, you think there's diminishing returns at this point where the books are just reiterating the same information?
>>
Is there any book on disney style?
>>
>>2337055
After a certain point they aren't that necessary anymore because you've internalized the information. At that point you progress by studying from life, masters, and working on your own personal choices and style.
>>
>>2336875
Got you covered, dude. mediafire / download /b0utcj0o0bq4vqi/Joseph+Sheppard+-+Drawing+the+Living+Figure.pdf
>>
>>2337055

At that point you can probably discern what you need to learn and should just consult books on an as-needed basis or if they're by an artist you like.

Keeping a good anatomy book near at hand is never a bad idea, but yeah there's going to be overlap in every book on the same subject.
>>

Architecture books will only confuse you with professional shit you won't use unless you're doing something related to architecture where measurement matters.

What you want is just a perspective book, your image is just a simple 1-point perspective with easy as fuck perspective tricks to divide everything equally and to help positioning doors/windows.

If you're trying to do comic art--like that image right there, you're better off with a book written for comics. I recommend 'Vanishing Point' by Jason Cheeseman-Meyer (yes thats a real name).

It's probably worth noting, that image was probably with sketchup or an image dropped into manga/clip studio and then inked on top. Doesn't mean you shouldn't learn perspective though.
