Should I change anything else? would any of you consider this "good"?

>>2315276
Looks great if its in a comic book, but too sketchy as a final piece

>>2315397
These night scenes with black on sky style always cause a cool effect, its like cheating, I see the indie devs noticed
>>
>>2315406
Good as in terms of apparent skill level? No. Better than the average person can draw, not skilled or appealing enough to be called good imo. I wouldn't say you should change anything more though. From what I can see, you just need mileage. You need to churn out some sketches and studies as fast as possible. That'll help you in the long run way more than investing more time in this picture.
>>
>>2315410
Thanks for the feedback, do you think speed is more important than accuracy? I always thought it was better to make a few drawings with the most accuracy you can than many sketches
>>
>>2315416
not that anon but fixing a piece for hours can only teach you so much. You'd be much better off doing shorter sketches, as in 5-20 minute sketches and leaving mistakes as they are and just learning from them.
You'll become more loose that way and learn how to emphasize the most important lines and leave out excessive detail. Also your workflow should become much faster that way which will help a ton in the future
>>
>>2315426
I always started my day with a 30 min sketch and then went on to work on these "big pieces", full colored illustrations that took many hours to complete.

One thing I realized is that I hated doing the sketches, because I always felt anxious and they mostly ended up pretty badly, now I feel like I only hated them because they forced me to think and try to figure things out fast, while my illustrations were like a marathon, I just put a lot of effort into them and that's it. I do think however that focusing on the speed itself may be dangerous because you may lose accuracy

Yes!
This is all shockingly intentional, and it's good that the pedophilia aspect gets through. The boring expressions are something I'm unsure about: should both the boy and the girl be shedding angry tears instead, or accepting their situation as an inevitability, without seeing flaw in it, hence the boring expressions?

It's >>2315410 now. No way, accuracy is my mantra. Speed comes naturally as you build up memory by studying. Unlike the other anon, for your skill level I wouldn't recommend such short sketches, I'd say spend at least an hour trying to recreate something from reference, then try drawing it again from memory, spending less time on those most likely, but really the time spent should be the time it takes you to feel like you've gotten it right. If it doesn't look right, start over. In between these do lots of imaginative sketches to make sure you're still practicing construction, whenever you can find the time. But always focus on accuracy, even drawing from imagination. If you can draw a box so it's not dented or off perspective, all your shapes should have form that convincing and solid. It won't happen right away, just strive for that.

I'm trying to find a good spot where I can keep the misleading appearance of children's toys at a glance and still get to something distressing when you have a closer look. Mark Ryden's & Katja Tukiainen's works have an uncomfortable but candy-like effect that's similar to what I'm looking for.
Still editing everything. I'll try out more sickly color schemes if I have to, though I was hoping that I wouldn't have to rub the gritty in the viewer's face.

Not a submission or a critique, but I did a siterip for myself of the figure drawing site in the OP a while back.

Better than the first version, but I kind of like the second version more (or rather, I like helmets and the splashes of red).

I'd consider the second version to still be a thumbnail, and not the completed plan. You should still explore many different approaches to narrow down to the best possible illustration for the scene. More on thumbnails here: http://pastebin.com/fZM8NdBr

I tried my hand at it, trying to preserve what you were going for. I was mainly focused on composition and pushing the perspective. Though it's not super successful, it might give you some ideas of how to approach this.

In mine, I didn't give any attention to setting believable lighting, and I'm still not satisfied with his left fist.

Once you settle on a winning thumbnail and sketch, you should definitely consult/make references to get everything in place. You could photograph yourself with a timer set on a low camera angled upwards. You could build a simple maquette using clay or even foil. You could even arrange cubes in a 3D program as a stand-in for all the major masses (head, chest, pelvis, upper arm, lower arm, hand, etc). When making the references, you can even play with the lighting so that you'll end up not only with a reference for anatomy/pose/perspective, but an overall plan for where the lights should fall as well.

Keep at it. Don't be afraid to set it aside and do some quick studies aimed at anything you currently find difficult with this specific piece.

I'm reading through keys to drawing, still in the draftsman chapter.

I'm sure I understand the reason I'm studying draftsman work, but I'm having a few problems. Firstly, I'm finding myself lacking confidence in my lines, causing a shaky hand and fucked up pressure gradients. Any tips?

Also, I've marked in red various problems with the "project" and I was just looking for an opinion. Should I be critical with my work as of now? It feels like an important underpinning, and in order to improve I should gitgud; but I see these things and feel a little worried, as though I'm potentially poisoning my knowledge, as if I should be better at it for some reason.

quite nice overall, but there is something wrong with the torso of the woman, on our left. It's like it's flat, like she doesnt have a back or something. Same, the shoulder on that side is too much frontwards.

I think the crouching guy head is too big, too.

Also, how do you greyscale to colour? I've tried one time with a simple overlay and it looks horrendous, lol.
>pic related

I see it now on the lady, the head of the guy crouching might be too, will try fixing it

>how to color

No fucking idea, I've not learned yet to do it properly from grayscales, but I'll just push it till it's decent just overlaping layers, you shouldn't try to do it all in a row and only in one layer on overlay, that's not going to allow you too many things, i'll probably do that as second step after coloring all
>>

Do what ever you enjoy more. My art got exponentially better when I went digital because I can paint for hours in photoshop for fun but with graphite I have to force myself to draw for 20 minutes because the medium is frustrating and messy.

>>
>>2316652
Take the layer you picture is on and duplicate it, put the duplicate layer on top of the original and set it to multiply. Now in between those layers make a new layer and you can scribble some colours. That is just for a quick colouring though, colours are tricky and you have to plan everything out since they all respond to values differently. Yellow for example only exists in high values while green can still be green when you have it next to black.

Your values and colours are a fair bit darker than the stock. Also try analyse the difference in light sources more. The source from above is very pale white light, and is quite strong and clear on parts like the ears, shoulders, etc, but the source from below/front is more of a gentle light, which is weaker and more diffused. So having the light on his head and such as strong white light and then the face light blended in more with soft brushes would help.

I've been trying to learn about rendering too, anon, so I tried out some things on your thing. I think if the shadow is that deep, it has to go all the way down, and if it's a light shadow that doesn't cast all the way down the side of the cone, the cone will still be casting its own shadow and catching light in its own way. I wouldn't say any of this is right necessarily, but it might help. Either way it was still good practice for me.

I see or "feel" most of the time the flow of the gesture, but sometimes I get really confused and i don't know what to do, for example in the image, I don't know how to draw the gesture of the ballet dancer's right leg or the torso and arms of the last one. In some images I don't feel flow or energy so i don't know how to do the lines.

go back to drawing kid. judging by your doodles i suggest you get to it.
>>
>>2317549
Take this with a grain of salt, since I'm still learning about this myself, but I'll try to give a little explanation at least. Imagine the ball is sitting next to the cone on the same plane and there's a light shining behind them. Their shadows would be coming towards you, but the cone's shadow would be longer because it's taller so it blocks more of the light. That's why the ball's shadow doesn't go all the way down the side of the cone, it's too small to block enough light from getting to the cone. But the cone still casts a shadow of its own, but that area won't be as dark as the area where it's overlapping the ball's shadow. Then on the ground plane both objects combine to cast one shadow silhouette. The more directly above an object the light source is, the more the cast shadow shrinks and is directly under the object, like on the left under the cone. When in doubt, grab refs and analyze how the shadows fall. Hope that helps some.

Start with a lighter halftone. Just up the levels until your halftone is like a mid-high gray. The nose is wonky and poorly rendered. Just reference an image of a nose it's like 2million times easier. The lips are too pursed, and the bow of the upper lip seems too fat. Also the lips should blend carefully into the skin, no harsh edge there. the crease beneath the bottom lip is too dark and too short, making her chin look bigger than it is.The brow bone is too flat. The sides of the nose rise are too sharp and too far apart. The eye shape is alright, but the areas around the eye don't look right. The create feels completely flat, there isn't much of an indication of a tear duct. And the 'bag' under the eye is placed/shaped wrong. The headdress is wonky, tilted too far right. The jaw is uneven.
Apart from this, you're approaching shading in a very muddy way. It doesn't look like you're confident in establishing the values or your understanding of form. Establish your large area's of shadow in a single shade first (a grey slightly darker than the halftone), then blend them out. Pic related shows a good way to approach shading.

Thank you so much dude. You've really helped me a lot. I think I'll do some studies while analyzing things like this to get a better grasp of it.
