Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studys & getting critique.

>Thread study: This one is rather advanced because its quite likely people here struggle even with a basic head drawing, but its nice to branch out sometimes. Try doing some different expressions, maybe fill a whole page with them -> simplyfication is the key for quick skecthing, capture what makes the expression unique.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Would drawing images from anatomy books then trying again from memory count as a good exercise? Doing that with Bridgman Drawing from Life.
>>
>>2311900
No. Focus on getting proportion right with your drawing first. Don't forget to match the background value as well otherwise your subject's value will be off. For hair, focus on the whole thing by squinting hard. After squinting the value is about as dark as the background and only slightly lighter than her hoodie. The only light part appears at the top, not the individual strands on the side.

Hi /ic/, I bought a drawing tablet a little over a week ago after deciding I wanted to practice digital art. I suck at art in general but I really love it and I know practice makes perfect.

Pictured above is kinda my first little thing I've done with the tablet so far. I was partially inspired by the Blood Moon from Bloodborne. The thing I'm having trouble with is figuring out how to put good shadows on the mountain, and I also feel like the picture as a whole lacks a lot of depth. Every time I've added to the picture, I'm not happy with the result. Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you shouldn't be tackling digital or digital painting if you can't grasp simple objects yet.

Mountains are no different than anything else you see around you. Try practicing drawing a Cube and a Sphere and give it some value. Don't bother with your digital pad, so this on paper and pencil. Give your Cube depth, and shadow, as well as the sphere. Post results.

Just absolutely stop drawing contours and muscles - you're not there yet, what you're producing right now is garbage. Draw gestures - don't rush to finish a ton of them, work on getting the rhythm of the body right.

Work with SIMPLE volumes after you're good with gestures and simplified poses. Block in the ribcage, hip, head, legs and arms as squares. Focus on how they are placed in 3D space.

Work towards achieving something similar to picture related. Note everybody draws gestures differently. Try different approached until you find one you like.

You also need to work on your hairy lines / chicken scratching. A good exercise is drawing 2 points and connect them with a single stroke. Hover over the motion a few times before putting the line down. More useful exercises you would benefit greatly from can be found here

Are you working from any resources or are you just winging it? You need to find a METHOD. That is step one. Follow some Proko videos, or go through the Loomis books, or hampton or whatever. Aimlessly drawing figures is not optimal. You need to find a method and do it over and over until you understand it.

At your skill level I would say you should start at the very beginning.

http://drawabox.com/

This is a great resource and you would gain a lot by going through all the lessons. By the time you are drawing figures again you will be much better at drawing.

>>
>>2312047
Stop with this. You're rushing. Stop. Rushing.
You're line quality is terrible. Actually work on these. Actually give it lightning that makes sense. What the hell is that smug on the side? The shadows? But even then, the lighting doesn't make sense on your drawing even though the answer is right in front of you. Cross hatch that shit!

Work on your shapes, watch Peter Han's lectures, stop trying to draw people. You cannot grasp the idea of drawing people right now. You can't. You're so fixated to drawing the detail and contour, you're not seeing the figure for what it really is. When a pro artists draw eyes, they don't "draw" eyes. They draw shapes. When they draw a face, they don't draw a face. They draw a bunch of shapes. You can't see these shapes cause you haven't even started training your eye.

Peter han. Now. Download. Watch. Do each lecture / exercise 15 times. Failure to do this, you WON'T learn.

you do what I do man, the areas that you haven't practiced drawing from imagination are more accurate than the head and it's probably because you're painting what you see with the rest of the body and you're accidentally starting to construct the face with the method you use to draw from imagination instead of just copying what you see

Started shading my sketch of the bird from a little while ago. Too tired to finish tonight but might as well post progress. He's missing a leg because the leg was awful.
>>
>>2312124
>>2312117
I think you're right. It looks like I accidentally rotated the face to the left because I've gotten too used to drawing that perspective. I tried to shave off some of the right side of her face to get it closer, but the result was just messing up the angles on that side. I'll look at angles more closely next time.
Thanks for the advice I think this helps.
>>
>>2312137
Don't bother shading.
Work on the proportions. Break down the bird into shapes. Try in 3 parts. Head, Rib cage, and tail. Then connect the neck, and put out the legs. If the construction still looks off, do it again.
>>
>>2312143
Is it not worth shading at all? I only started to because I was pretty happy with the proportions (not saying my proportions are perfect by any means - obviously as I removed a leg after I started shading). Is it better for me to avoid shading entirely while I'm still an absolute beginner?
>>
>>2312149
You can shade, just understand line quality and construction is way more important than shading. If you can't get either right, then no matter how much you shade, it's going to look like shit.
>>
>>2312152
Got it.
>>
>>2312149
If you feel like shading then do it, it's not like it will have a negative impact, but the way your shapes, perspective and proportions are right now, you would benefit more from practicing them instead.

Where do I start? It seems like when someone posts something there's a million answers to where they should start improving, and I'm not sure where to go.
My end goal is really just drawing figures and adding basic detail, then improving on that and being able to draw from imagination and color (but I expect that's far into the future). I tried loomis for drawing, and I'm inconsistent with that at best. This is my second try on drawing a figure side-by-side.

So where should I start if I'm shit with even the absolute fundamentals?

>>
>>2312169
'Loomis' is thrown around a lot here, but you'll actually benefit from his books. If nt fun with a pencil, some people find it more fun to dive into the figure drawing one.

Keys to drawing is also a good book to start with.

It looks like you had the beginnings of some good construction - you should try and trust those more :)

>>2312399
Cubes are needed to understand in order to make your mountains more believable. Mountains are just a bunch of of cubes, learning how to draw one will teach you how to draw many.

A lot of things wrong with this image, and it has nothing to do with the depth. Line quality is awful, values making very small sense, and your cube isn't in perspective.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uEtdDvK6Xo - This is a good video to watch and understand.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk - Practice your line work

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7O7-EU4bgg - How to render / draw rocks

Once you understand how to draw a cube, you can draw rocks. Once you can draw rocks, then you can draw mountains. Alphonso Dunn also has a "how to draw mountains" as well, but you need to first understand how to draw rock and perspective.

Also read "Perspective Made Easy" by Ernest R. Norling

Okay, I've got a long post ahead.

I always drew as an escape from school work. Whenever I handed in a paper, it was riddled with drawings and stuff. Now that I'm out of school, I want to draw again, but I've crippled myself with a 'style' of same-faces and shitty work.

I've looked at the sticky and I've gathered some books, but I'm really confused where to take the first step. Honestly, what am I supposed to do from the start? When I look at the sticky, it gives me, like, one thing to do and some books and I don't understand the progression.

Practice, practice practice, I assume, but do I just read the book chapter by chapter and do the things it's teaching, just over and over until I get it?
Do I pose work in these threads and ask for critiques and take those and work with them?

Much help, thanks.

Any type of drawing will lead you to be able to draw like this idiot that doesnt get anatomy whatsoever.
>>
>>2313037
You're not. Slow the fuck down.
The reason why your lines are jumping like that is because you're going to quick. Go very slow. If you see small humps in your lines, that means you're going TOO slow. Go faster.

Finding that "in-between" for your speed is key. Once you find that in-between, then you can work on going faster. It's gonna take a while to find it, tho.
>>
>>2313056
Thank you.

when I did those exercises, I noticed that if I moved my eyes away from the line for even a fraction of a second, it would veer off for a bit. Some of those lines were also due to the sketchbook moving or there being bumps in the page.
>>
>>2313064
I took peter han's class and made the exact same mistakes. Go slow as fuck if you have. Like REALLY slow. But like I mentioned, when you go too slow, you get those very small mini wobbles on your lines. When that's the case, go a little faster. Speed will come in time. Your objective is to keep Steady, it has nothing to do with speed.

A little direction would have been nice, but after finishing the 2nd half of the video and copying what he was doing while he was doing it, it gave me a better idea of what I should be "feeling".

Pic related is obviously better, but also obviously flawed. Am I going in the right direction?
>>
>>2313257
the entire point of a contour line is to show it wrapping around the form, giving it a 3d look. You look like you're simply just adding more lines for no reason.

Gesture drawings is a bit much for your current level, you need to grasp the idea of drawing first. Read Keys to Drawing, since it'll answer more about contours, and among other things.
>>
>>2313240

I think doing some simple cartoony stuff would be a good start. Do those cheesy "how to draw a bird in five steps" tutorials. Add excercises for understanding volume. Proko, Vilppu, Scott Robertsson etc.
This is a good site aswell: http://drawabox.com/lesson/1

Basically, you need to learn how to draw interesting shapes, and how to translate those into perspective (form drawing).
>>
>>2313281
I think, more so specific, in how to go about drawing from imagination. Do I look at something, look away, and try to draw said object/image best from memory? I'm assuming that's the best approach, correct?
>>
>>2313285

That'll improve your visual memory, which is important.

Understanding basic shapes and construction is vital, though. If you can simplify an object, you can remember it considerably better, and you can far more easily rotate and adjust it in your head.

For the same reason, knowledge of human anatomy is really important if you want to draw people. And knowing the 'anatomy' of your subject matter in any case - how it works and why it works that way - lets you intuitively apply it. If you don't understand it, your imagination drawings will inevitably have flaws. If you're just memorizing pictures, even if you get really good at best you'll be able to conjure certain poses from memory.
>>
>>2313292
I mean, I understand all that. My only question is; what is the best way to practice from imagination?

I'm assuming you would think of, say a bird, then draw it right out in any position? Like no visual image what so ever? Never bothered attempting drawing from imagination, people say it's important. Was never sure how to go about it.
>>
>>2312483
You should post in the porn thread instead.
>>
I tend to have an issue where I make objects or figures too wide. Even after telling myself "draw more thin", it comes out too wide. Not even talking about the body, just overall shapes (head, arms, legs come out to wide, etc).

Any advice?
>>
>>2313345
just keep restating until you won't need it. Accuracy comes with practice.
>>
>>2312433
The rendering is very good.
Don't use copy paste for the legs especially if the hips have an angle.
It's a nice piece of art ;-)
>>
>>2312507
Construction. I have the same issue than you and it's hard to fight. If you flip the picture horizontally, you will see the issue in the construction (it's easier to flip with digital picture than with pen and paper, but you can use your smartphone)

i can't figure anything out
i can't understand HOW to start drawing
like its all a mystery and i don't even know where to begin

i've read some books and stuff but i still don't get it. i've been lazy, been trying to learn, but doing my own thing for 4 years now hoping i pick up something or learn what not to do.

but i'm at my wits end. all i got is a tablet phone to use for a canvas and an art app. i can't use paper, i don't print shit believe it or not and i haven't had paper for years now.
>>
>>2313303

People keep giving you advice and you keep asking the same question again because it doesn't seem to be the advice you're looking for.

So sure. Think of a bird and draw it right out in any position, if that's what you want. Otherwise you can try and apply some advice and look at some birds, reduce them to basic shapes, and then apply those shapes in different poses. You can render afterwards, and people frequently use reference for details even when drawing poses from imagination.

I swear to fucking god if you answer "Yeah but like... How do I draw from imagination?" again I'm just going to write you off as a lost cause. That is how. Learn construction. Learn how the things you're trying to draw work. Study them, understand them, and know how to build them. Don't expect a bird to just pop out of your imagination if you apply some ancient Chinese imagination drawing secret.

pic related.

And go to the fucking store and buy a pack of printing paper. If you can't be assed to step out your door for 20 minutes and grab some really basic supplies you're not going to be assed to spend the literal years required to attain proficiency in art. Go get printing paper. Can't afford printing paper? Go get a job and stop worrying about hobbies until you can support yourself enough to afford like five fucking dollars for 500 sheets of paper. Get a pencil, or a bic pen. This is a really small financial investment and it'll do you better than trying to draw on your damn phone.

From then, just draw. If the books are just mumbo-jumbo to you right now (I had a hard time with Loomis when I started) watch videos - Sycra, Proko, whoever, there are resources in the sticky. If Proko confuses you you've got more to worry about than learning art. A lot of other youtube artists make beginner level tutorials as well.

And just draw. Get some mileage, instead of fretting over the most efficient way. You'll find your strengths and weaknesses as you go and from there you will start knowing where to look resource wise.

I like it despite being horribe because the changes required to make it ok-ish arent that big. Work on your lines of symmetry(having the two end of the lips/eyes be on a single line) as well as general proportion (have the face be less elongated/have your lines be more elegant) and you'll be fine.

Wht i REALLY do not approve of however, is your eyelashes. Eyelashes go FORWARD, and since the eye is rounded it goes to the left on the left side and to the right on the ride side and seen from the side view, its goes completely forward, the eyelashes going towards you lose their lengths because theyre going in perspective towards you, but are thicker one by one. I recommend Sycras video on eyes

How important is learning something really realistic versus learning animation? I know Life Drawing is very important, but I ask simply because I know classes at my school that teach both subjects. Problem is, speaking to both teachers on the subject, they talk about it as though you should only learn one way or the other and that it's redundant to take both classes at once.

I'm usually told and read that drawing from Life is important. However, to make those things from life look "really realistic" with in depth value, texture, etc... is it that important if you want to learn animation? Just wondering.

>>
>>2314064
are you saying that in relation to the funnels exercise or the shapes with contour lines? I just want to make sure.
>>
>>2314072
You need to give those shapes a more 3D feel. Right now, those shapes carry no form because you've yet to give them any. However, that's simply because you don't know how.
>>
>>2314057
Also general form, eye tracing, with bad photos your ability to see value, your anatomy perspective on difficult poses, etc.

All drawing helps you across multiple skllsets but gesture lets you get flow and i think its unique in that way.

>>
>>2314108

You need to carefully get a sensation of the smooth curves of the cylinders... and circles...

When going from top to bottom in an arc, initially slow, then faster, then slow down again.

And let the pen or pencil drag along the paper's surface to properly render it without going over and ending short
>>
>>2314108
Buy generic Bic pins and make sure they're Cristal with black ink. There a right size for what the exercises you are trying to do work. Don't waste money on those pens since you're just starting. For that matter, don't ever use those pens unless you're working on something you REALLY want to make look good. Even pros use bic pens to show off their illustrations.

Anyways, it seems like you can't grasp perspective. Have you read "Keys to Drawing"? If not, you should read it. If you have... look up Perspective Made Easy. Otherwise, youre gonna have a very difficult time with this.

I think what happens is I basically set up the ball/jaw/feature placements and it's not really true to the subject, and then I don't really know what to do. Do I just need to pay more attention when I'm setting up? Is the construction supposed to be explicit or is it just an aid for copying? Again, thanks for the help.

Well, this is my first time drawing anything besides doodles. I know I'm still incredibly far off even beginning to receive critique, but I still feel like posting it, even if it's for the sake of posting.
It's the upside-down Igor exercise from the sticky, if anyone didn't know that.
>>
>>2314161
I came here last week asking for this but never got it thanks for posting it. I wasn't reading that whole damn book

almost! the two on the top and the one on the bottom right are fine, but the horizontal one on the bottom left has something funky going on. if you were shooting for some two point perspective, you'll have to establish a second vanishing point on the horizon line and have the horizontals converge toward it. here you have them converging at some arbitrary point below the horizon line, for some reason!

if you weren't going for two point perspective and you were just trying something new, then feel free to ignore this. keep on keeping on, my dude.

I'd say give it up, drawing's obviously not for you.

Is there an Hampton style book for animals? Or better yet, has he done something on drawing animals?
>>
>>2314218
thank you so much.

But yeah, it was 1pt. I marked where the Vanishing point was on the paper, even.

yeah! i got that the top two and the one on the bottom right were one point, but that drawing on the bottom left just seemed like you were shooting for two point.
>>
>>2314229
not the same anon, but it seems like you have it contained in the box that is headed to one perspective point (the lines done in pencil) and then you have a second vanishing point done in pen for the cylinder. All vanishing points should be on the horizon line, and having one in the middle of the page not on the horizon line is very confusing. The lower left object, given the horizon line you've drawn that all of the other objects are in reference too, is not a cylinder but a truncated cone.
>>
>>2314238
well that one in particular ended up being a truncated cone because I messed up some of the scaling. I just decided to complete it and make it a cone. but yeah i get what you're saying.

Here are some more. I'll work more on drawing from life and training my eye for sure, I realize there's no silver bullet. Any major problems other than that? (ignoring my shitty attempts at rendering)

DRAW BIGGER
with that space you can get at least 2 heads
and draw the neck too

Honestly theres just a subset of things I refuse to help people with, and thats copying pictures in small format, such a fucking chore. If you apply yourself a lot on a single picture or do an original ill help, or else just use digital layering to see your mistakes.

>>2314193
>>2314161

Fuck Everyone I'm going ahead and remaking this shit in a more abridged format because whoever wrote that is mentally retarded.

>>2314189
Yeah I know it, its the exercise that sets you up to fail.
seriously I would never expect anything out of it.
>copy a stylized old man upside down

Move onto something you like drawing, or something constructive.
i.e. Anatomy, gestures, how to study from references, perspective.

I've lost all creativity. If someone tells me what to draw I can draw it, but if I try to do something for myself my mind goes blank. What the fuck is going on.
>>

S bretty gud :DDDDD
>>
>>2314636
If you don't know what it is, how are we suppose to know what's going on?

So it's just a guy, holding a something. For what purpose?

It could have been a warrior with a lance. A golfer with a club. A monk with a staff. A wizard with a really long pipe.

You have improved with the feet, but are still lacking in other areas. The whole thing feels dull because you were just putting things in the page.

Do practice fundamentals, and having a direction when drawing will really strengthen things.

You got this, bro.

Found old acrylic paints from my coffins and decided to try traditional art for a chance.

I will have to invest in to better brushes...
