This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Also, reposting...
>>2310913
I think you should show the bottom of the head a little. idk as it stands it looks like her head isn't properly connected to the neck.
>>2311216
The buildings need variation.
Not him but thanks for sharing that too.
>>2311216
Agreed with >>2311220.
Notice in your refs how you see either the underside of the head or the head from straight on, even though the model is looking down.
The head as you have it makes sense if that head is closer to our eye level. With the back upright, the neck on its own would have to bend substantially to get that head angle. Tried to show that with my shitty redline.
Try loading up a 3D program, and use boxes as a stand in for the pelvis, ribcage and head. Place the camera so that the perspective on the torso loosely matches your drawing. Now rotate the head box to match your drawing. Look at this model from other camera angles, and see if that neck movement looks possible. You can also correct the head position using multiple angles to guide you, then go back to your first camera angle and observe if you'd see the top or bottom of that head box.
Then there's always the faster solution of setting up a camera low to the ground angled up, put it on a timer and strike the pose yourself. Notice if you see the top or underside of your head.
>>2311232
>>2311220
Thanks for this, I'll try to show more of the top/back of the head as opposed to the front. I don't really have a 3D Program handy around I could use to see the forms in simple shapes, but I do have that 3d doll thing from quite some time back. I'll try to refer to that.
>>2311225
I usually work those out in the rough rendering phase, but thanks.
I'm trying to learn how to render, by painting over a linework made by somebody else.
I don't know why, but my way of rendering looks bad.
What am I doing wrong?
What should I study? Color theory? Placing in cast shadows in a correct perspective? Go back to rendering basic geo forms? Anatomy?

Honestly one of these days you'll have to explain yourself. What is so special about oversized animu's in a city environment? I'm not judging. I'm just curious. What is so appealing about them?
PS.disregard what follows if you have no intention or interest in growing as an artist.
Also if you wanna be able to do it really well i would suggest not focusing so much to finish new pieces all the time. draw 1 and do studies for a month then do another. I promise that you'll be doing great ones allot faster. and by studies I mean not doing pieces. spend 1 day drawing arms 1 drawing legs look into muscles etc. bones. Just felt like I had to give some tips since you seem to struggle allot, seen you here for years now budd.
>>2312379
I hear you. I have done plenty of studies that I don't generally post, but it feels like I have alot more trouble actually applying what I've learnt as opposed to not knowing things. Part of it is probably because of work, too, I guess; I feel compelled to draw shit I like when I'm at home. I draw pretty much everything but kawaii strong anime girls when I'm at work, but I should really stop using that as an excuse to draw cute animes.
But yeah, even if it dosen't seem like it, I want to git gud for the sake of my job too.

-in general softened things up, put a bit more meat (goo??) on her to more easily imply softness through things squeezing/pressing into other things
-got rid of some superfluous lines
-softened her chin, moved eyes around a bit
- fixed arms, i assumed she was flicking her "hair" back with her hand so went with that for the correction
she probably needs to be rotated a bit, might look like she's falling backwards to some, tho you could argue she's slightly bending her left knee while her right foot is possibly propped up on something but it doesn't matter if the drawing is "technically" correct, it has to "look" correct
so i guess
-study arm/leg anatomy
-remember boobs have volume
-also remember that while hard and angular things look very cool, what is generally considered "sexy" are things that appear soft, squeezable, yet tight/smooth, possibly even bulging (even big muscular dudes need to look somewhat soft, remember that muscle can squeeze just like fat, not as much, but it's noticable), so study up on how to show that more effectively
-think in threedeeeeeeeee
>>2312052
stop painting using repetive strokes with opacity.
>>2313559
not the anon you replied to, but I do the same in my drawings
what's the better method?
Just a few questions, wondering if anyone can shed some light on the subject. When I see other people's work being stylize, I notice a few things, but could never understand why (especially with animu)
Most of the time, when heads are drawn, the cranium is usually drawn with a semi-perfect circle almost at any angle and with a jaw line. What confuses me here is with the jaw line, why are the cheeks usually somewhat puffy with the female models, and what purpose does that serve?
I've also notice at times, since the heads tend to be bigger or "more circle", the eyes are usually spread more apart away from the nose to fit the skull. Why create this space? Or better yet, why create that gap there to begin with?
Not looking for a "help me, please!" or anything. Just curious as to why these approaches are taken when stylize.

>>2313883
i'm gonna respond seriously because maybe there is a chance you are actually chunbum posting this here and not just some shitposter
the head is fine honestly, it's distinctly placed in a confident manner, so it feels like it's intentionally placed as such to unnerve the viewer.
that arm on the left figure tho... the curve gives a nice flow, but it's too-short length amateurishly betrays any harmony it brings, undermining whatever confidence is found elsewhere in the piece
>>2313914
Oh you are right! It's too short, I see I see. Thank you very much! You are the best! I will soon bring an updated version with the corrected arm length.
>>2313914
Fixed, looks much better now. Thank you for the advice!
>>2313937
>looks much better now
Not really, IMO. I guess sort of the style of the piece is to be disproportionate but it still looks badly drawn. then again I think most modern art is badly drawn and shitty so, yeah.
>>2313939
Are you the same person who gave me the advice to fix the arm?
>>2313833
im not him but god damn do you just not understand the form of the vase? Also while im art it fuck your ears.
>>2313948
no I am another person. I just think that the arm stlil looks as similarly disproportionate as the first one, except now it's too long, or perhaps too skinny.
I dunno, 'disproportionate and wacky' is a style that I've seen used to get good-looking results and I just don't think you've mastered that style
I remember a while back there was an image posted here showing the age of a female animu girl and their height from each age. Would anyone know what page I'm talking about? It was from a Japanese book (or so I think it was).
>>2311259
look at your ref. different ranges in value, sat and hue. And there is a lot of detail and anatomy hints in that rendering. You need a lot more anatomy understanding to make the rendering in your ref than you need to make the line drawing you are using.
>>2313954
Here is revised version. Arm doesn't look as long anymore.
>>2313937
apologies for crude mspaint lines, i tried to make a few small corrections to the shoulder area along with some lines around her neck to help define it more
>>2313833
her left arm is unfortunately still very goofy, along with her boob pressed against the vase (especially the way the boob window implies the form of the squished boob is way too flat). i'd try to wireframe the surface to try and show you how it moves but im' very tired and need to sleeeep ;-;
head heights in the style you're going for are usually indicative of implied actual character height. average head size on a full grown human is usually within 8-10 inches tall, regardless of height. split the difference at 9 inches and you can do the math from there
7 heads tall = ~5'3
8 heads tall = ~6'
9 heads tall = ~6'9
i'd put zodee at 8-8.5, maybe even 9 heads, depending on how crazy you wanna get, seeing as how she's normally presented as rather tall.
>>2314012

>>2314164
Looks good. Try to study movement of conventional humanoid robots in real life, such as ASIMO. Their legs bend even in resting state, like this
\
/
which is easiest balancing state on zero moment point.
Your robot's stance is typical from anime like gundam, but I think it would fall over in real life.
>>2314164
I love your work and one of the main thing i like about your coloring is that...dont know how to say "Grain/Noise" effect. It makes flat glossy colors less flat and glossy which is great.
How you doing that? Is it some automatic filter in Photoshop or you using texture with overlay?
>>2314173
I see what you're saying, though I was wanting to a draw more interesting pose this time around, the last one I drew was a more simple at rest stance and I didn't want to simply repeat that. You're probably right that it would fall over, I'll have to work on that.
>>2314175
Thank you.
>>2314176
I don't do anything fancy, I apply the watercolour 'filter' on SAI to try and break up the flats a bit, which does the bulk of it, and have a few brushes with high noise/grain when I want to bump it up more.
>>2313966
Anyone?
>>2314197

Working on a detective comic in a world with sentient food. I'm having a hard time with a couple of things:
How do I make the figures look dynamic if they're box or egg shaped (the main character is literally a hard boiled egg)?

>>2314273
I think it looks good, but your most glaring issue is trying to figure out the legs before grounding the character. I'm not sure if her thighs are flat against what she's sitting on or not. Much like how the hands ground the arms, try and include the feet (or have an idea of what they're doing and where they are) to ground the legs

>>2315158
>I just want to get better and draw more good looking fit qt giant girls.
>good looking fit qt
We just found the problem Rin-chan.
If you draw "fit" giant girls what you basically do is draw the body of a 30yo. bodybuilder with lots of bronze cream on with the head of an adolescent girl.
Now what i know about bodybuilding is that those bodies that you like to draw for those girls are far from fit and healthy. At that state those people are extremely tired, hungry and anything but strong. Those muscles are mostly just for show.
If you want to girls/women with at least attractive bodies (muscular and cute usually don't go well together but there are numerous excepions - at least at stylized characters) then the thing you need to focus on is that the subjects you draw, are FEMALE. Try to find the balance between strong muscles and female curves if you want them to look attractive.
The best example would be to look at photos/reference of girls/women who are doing some kind of athletic sport or martial arts. Those muscles are more functional and more aesthetically pleasing.
>actually vent to /h/ to get you stylized reference:

I tried to be as objective as i could and i want to point out that i'm not nearly as good as you are, but it's your choice to take the advice or not.
Halp

This might be it... thanks anon.
Also thanks for the ref, the chie one is kind of weird but the other two are great.

things i'm noticing;
-her clavicle is too prominent, make it less of a bump
-breasts are connected to the upper arms, like the pecs, you've made them look like a separate entity stuck on the front of her chest.
-give her more of volume down by her crotch, it's too flat.
So how's this turning out?
>>2317147
Like this, apparently.
Anyone have that picture of the white girl getting sucked into a black hole with a yellow background? really need the artists name
>>2317370
this one? if so their name is 8939 and you can find them on deviantart
>>2317259
kek
>>2317388
>their
Man, I really hate PC pronouns, someone on a FB did the same thing to me and got annoyed when I told him/her (see?) that I was not an artist group.
>>2317573
Is their really pc? I say it all the time when referring to people and i'm the least politically correct person. It's just convenient ffs
>>2317573
?????
Their is a pronoun you use when you dont specifically know the persons gender. Eg. "I don't know who drew this, but their lines look nice"
Its super common, fedorabeard
>>2317573
ESL go home
>>2317576
It's fucking stupid him/her his/her is much more proper.
>>2317583
No, it looks really stupid. It's much easier to write "their" than "his/her"
People have always used that word, it's not some feminist thing
>>2315195
underrated
>>2317584
I have yet to see this use for their. My issue is not about the PC thing but in this case "their" is simply misleading.
>>2317601
it isn't you fucking autist, it is used commonly in literature, and is easy to use when the gender is unknown.
>>2317601
>I have yet to see this use for their

>>2315080
eyes are waaaay too close together. one eye width apart anon, even on animu.
>>2317601
don't talk about a language you don't know. If english is your mother tongue, you should be ashamed of yourself. Never heard of their, complains about it. Never heard of someone exposing their stupidity in such a way.
>>2317388
yea that's it. The artist I was looking for is really similar to that I guess. They have youtube videos of their paintings up with their own music on them. I remember one of them being of some monster girls in school uniforms and a big guy in the center.

Gotta study more anime artists before attempting anime next time .
>>2317874
i referenced your look and it really helped clean up mine
Fuck. I hope this is better than my previous attempt.

>>2318186

>>2318069

>>2318197
ur mad is showing :^)
>>2318196
Looks too stiff?
>>2318231
if you would redo the hands. the stiffens is there. make them flowy make dem womanly make them like waterfall make her hold dem daggers elegantly.
>>2318196
I second this. Maybe try to find a reference pose, not to copy from but just to get a feel for how the body balances with one leg up, and then exaggerate that a bit before building upon it.
Trying to digital ink, just a lot of wasted time.
Too lazy to finish turtle.fish.paint study
>>2318400
turtle.fish.paint is a two person circle where (i believe) turtle does the writing, rough page layouts as well as inks, while fish does the pencils.
try looking up each's individual works and studying from there
>>2318069
hey, duder, me again, lookin a lot better than last time, still a few small things to address, but i'll "spoon feed" as the kids say in a bit, after i get back from thing, you're like right at that level i feel best equipt to help, seeing as i'm just a bit more "skilled" than you (i hope that doesn't sound arrogant, hahaha, i just mean that all the mistakes you're making are things i've only recently overcome in the past year or so)
so Im planing to come back to the /ic/ school, can you see what are some of my weak points at this moment so I can focus my studies?
>>2318518
and some other sketches
>>2317898
Glad it helped (and was decent looking enough to ref).
>>2318480
Huh, I never realized turtle.fish.paint was a duo. Looked at Fish's blog for reference today for pic related, but I have no idea what Turtle's own work looks like.
>>2318480
Nah, you don't come across as arrogant. I appreciate any help I can get.
I've been struggling with stylization
>people as bad as rinfag have an artist job
what's your excuse, senpai?
>>2318743
i don't want to work.
>>2318743
I don't practice properly, senpai.
Doing a SZZ and Bayo fanart, just have the main body outline down, thoughts?
>>2318994
How can one not see how wrong this looks?
