Do what you do for yourself. If you focus on getting rewarded for everything you do with money and praise you won't go far.
>>
>>2309962
Yeah that worked until I had bills to pay. I don't care about praise, but I do need to be able to support myself.

>all i ever wanted to do

Get a job that can get you by and do what you love in your spare time. As you get better, find a way to monetize doing what you love. Even if you don't find a way to make money off it, you'll still be happier had you not put some time into it. Hopefully with this I can develop it into a decent webcomic and sell some merch down the line, but as far as making a career out of this I'm highly doubtful.
>>
>>2310299
>as far as making a career out of this I'm highly doubtful
That's what I mean. I love comics, and will always draw them in some way, in fact I've even been doing some pseudo comics by commission. But I wanted to do it full time as a career, get a job at a publisher for a while even. I don't see it happening, and that kills me.

Nowadays it's easier than ever before to make a living with comics. You don't even need a publisher. Most somewhat successful webcomic artists now make actually more money on patreon than established Marvel / DC artists.
>>
there's more NBA players than full time comic artists. + comics generally take more work than any other commission as well as paying a lot less. best to not treat comics as a source of income
>>
The day I realized that I would probably never be a successful comic artist was a very sad day for me.

Is it easy to make up the story more or less along the way like Toriyama did with Dragonball? (yes i know he got inspired by that old story)
>>
>>2311192

Save and resize yourself, I don't want to shit up the thread with multiples.

>>2311199

I've been planning on changing it for a while now, it doesn't fit the story any more. I made the folder for the comic when I only had the first 3 strips (which are admittedly super edgy, so it kind of fits).

>>2311224

>Is it easy

Relative to making up an entire story and dialogue beforehand and then drawing it all out ? Never done that, so no clue sorry. It's probably way more fun to do it this way, but that's likely just personal preference.

I know how you feel. I wanted to work into comics since I was like 12, but at some point I just realized I couldn't draw a sequence to save my fucking life. now its been years that I don't even try anymore. rerely I still get ideas, but as soon I go near a piece of paper everything vanishes.
its pretty funny how I managed to fail so badly at the only thing apparently was natural for me.
>>
>>2311914
In a way I wish I could trade places with you. If I felt I was simply incapable of doing the job, I think I could accept the idea of never making a career of it more easily. I really feel like I'm meant to do it too, and I think I'm good enough to be able to get hired doing it, I just don't think it's going to happen because of oversaturation and even if I got a job it wouldn't pay enough or the project might fall through or just a million other factors outside my control, and that's a hard pill to swallow.

Woopty woop.

I think I'm just gonna call it Crowface, seeing as how he's the protagonist. I think that's less awful, I've never been very good at naming pieces though. Any feedback/suggestions as to title or work in general?
>>
>>2312121

Also I digitally touched up the previous strips and re-uploaded to DA, they look much better now IMO. Definitely gonna go back and redo/expand on strips 1-4 as well.
>>
>>2312121
That sounds like a cool name. I think it's awesome you're pursuing this, despite the comic industry problems we talked about earlier.
>>
>>2312121

This is an interesting concept but it better go somewhere quick. So far it's incredibly dull. The characters are as one dimensional as you can get. They have no desires, no background, nothing. Where are they? Nowhere. Why are they there? No reason. Does the reader care at all? NOPE.
>>
>>2312121
Do you have a collection of all the pages? A DA or a tumblr? I love this so far. I've seen the earlier pages, and I want more.

Too much superfluous panels and superfluous panels. The pacing is really slow because there are so many panels of nothing. Cutting most of them as well as cutting most of the dialog you can better achieve the surreal underground comic vibe you're going for. I'd suggest you storyboard because it's very obviously stream of consciousness (not in a good way) and apply some economy to the number of panels and lines.
>>
>>2312593
that indeed looks a lot better than OP's

in comics simplicity is better, it forces the reader to use his/her imagination
>>
>>2312593

>superfluous panels and superfluous panels

kek

Thank you! I know I need to cut back on the dialogue, but I'm definitely not going to cut all of it like in your fix. I'm doing more pre-work and storyboarding now and I think it shows in the most recent page. As for the pacing and superfluous unnecessary panels, I've never really done this before so I'm struggling a bit to balance showing the reader what's happening and progressing the story. The first comic I posted an anon said it was really hard to tell what was going on so I generally go with the standard "assume your audience is basically retarded" system. Any specific fixes you had in mind for the most recent page? I think the 7th panel could be dropped and the "HERE" and "WHOA" could possibly be dropped too.

>>
>>2319750
Well, everything is just incredibly inconsistent and badly drawn, especially the faces. No real structure, no consistency within the style, no proper understanding of perspective.

I dunno, sometimes when something is badly drawn, it can still work because there is a certain degree of consistency and simplicity to it. Take OPs comic for example. It's a nice, charming comic where the bad drawings can be somewhat overlooked. This comic on the other hand looks like it tries to be a typical Marvel / DC comic with lots of dynamic panels and action poses etc and the artist can't pull off any of that remotely decent, so the flaws are way harder to overlook.
>>
>>2319749
Thanks a ton mate. I'll have to translate it eventually, it was done some months ago too.

I've been drawing my second webcomic now and so far I got 31 pages done.
The series I did before was inked and I stopped drawing that around htting 80pgs.

If you're wondering why this time it's left in chicken scratch, it's because I wanted to draw more pages and upload more every week.
I was only able to put out 6 pages at most a week when I'm inking so I stopped that. I can upload 10pgs a week without inking.
I also wanted to draw more faster and to practice on creating more panel-scripts since I don't have much experience.

It wasn't the inking that was time consuming but all the clean up and applying tones in PS that took huge amounts of time and effort.
It was super tedious the way I did it as well and wasn't a lot of fun.

How does everybody get readers for your comics?
I post on the occasional forums and upload on deviant as well but I'm really struggling to get any readers.

More than the art, my biggest criticism about this comic is that...I don't know who these two main characters are. The crowface and the other thing seem to be interchangeable. I do know that all white thing helps give the crowface a light and then it shot with an arrow, but other than that...I kinda don't care? Actually, I think that that cat thing is more the interesting character. I'm actually more interested in that thing's story.

Also, you didn't really give the story a proper introduction? Maybe rather than meeting these two characters stating that they are bored, why not just show it? Like were they walking around just like whatever? Were they playing around and just got tired of it? I am just supposed to be read the character say "I am bored" and then just follow this thing around and believe? How am I supposed to be convinced of that?

This is the equivalent of what you did:
Imagine Alice in Wonderland. Imagine that the story started with her meeting the Cheshire cat right off the bat. We don't know where she came from what she was doing there. We just start the story with Alice talking to the cat. We have no context for the story. We don't know why she's there why there's a talking cat. We don't know anything. Not to say that all stories need to start like that, but there should be some kind of introduction to the characters and what's going on. We need to see what life was like PRIOR to meeting the antagonist not afterwards. It's too late by then.
>>
>>2321821

Have you seen the previous threads and pages? Pages posted before this one can be found on my DA here. >>2310715

In the previous threads I made it clear that this project was started with no intention of turning it into something with a plot. As I've stated several times before, I'm going to go back and redo the first 5 pages and expand on them. I understand all the points you brought up, and I guess all I can really say for now is that I'm working on it. Thank you for taking the time to crit though!
>>
>>2321821

>>
>>2321911
I bet if you give an example of what you are talking about most of them still set up the story properly.
>>
>>2322846
>What are flashbacks?

Are there gonna be any in this story? Doubt it? It's pretty obvious that what was going on beforehand wasn't as important otherwise the author would have thought it out more.
>>
>>2321883
I dont know about other threads. All I know is what was presented before me. I will check out the link though. Also for someone who says that that they weren't interested in plot why did you present one when they met that cat thing & then have them betrayed by it? What's going to happen afterwards? They continue on their merry way & act like it never happened? If that's the rest of the plot then that's fine too.

Generally, speaking, the reason why even the most horribly drawn comics do well is because the story is somewhat decent. 'Art house' stories while valid, just don't have the same appeal as decently structured or written ones. People may tell me that I don't understand 'personal taste,' but even out of these pages posted I don't even get a sense of who your characters are. (I mentioned this earlier.) Their dialogue seems interchangeable. It's like you didn't really think them out thoroughly. If I can't empathize with your characters in some way it's hard to become interested in the story. I mean you will always find fans, don't get me wrong, but it will be like a niche of a niche of a niche.

You get what I'm saying?
>>
>>2322872
I know you went and looked the term up on Wikipedia and saw the word 'flashback', but flashbacks aren't in any way required.

>It's pretty obvious that what was going on beforehand wasn't as important

Dont get it either I see a lot of potential. As both a satire of fanatic religious culture and multicultural-liberal policies.

Maldraw don´t give up, you have the raw material to make this big. Eventually publish this, use da, youtube to promote yourself and your comic.

You can use lulu and get a IBSN number to publish on demand on amazon.

I received a lot hate for my drawings, for being russian (people with coldwar mentality), etc, etc.

Instead of giviing up I used that to fuel my dreams and keep going. Now I work in Japan and I am succeding.

Yes, I still received a lot hate even in places like this but I dont mind anymore, I even laught at it sometimes. I take it as a sign of me reaching success.

Keep going man,

Ilya

P.S. I made a quicky of christ chan, hope you´ll like it. Maybe I will publish it on da and pixiv if I finish it :)

alright! thanks, just sen it to the email.
well there are quite a few things actually, but its super easy to do once you ar ewhat you are doing, firs i pained over some shadows and highlights, either normal blending, or muliply for shadows, screen for highlights or overlay for both, then you can adjust the opacity of those layers. few adjustment layers, levels and brightness/contrast. then little bit of chromashift shenanigans. merge down the image, duplicated the layer the added a noise filter, which i guasiand blured and applied a mask to it (the mask was from one of the channels - just ctrl click it to get the selection. this leaves the noise only on the dark parts of the image)
merged down the image again, duplicated and put a highpass filter on it set to overlay.

so thats about it lol, but its really simple, it took me about the same time to do all that as listing all this in this post

>I know you went and looked the term up on Wikipedia and saw the word 'flashback', but flashbacks aren't in any way required.

Why are you arguing so hard about this? Essentially, you are right. You don't have to utilize flashbacks, BUT you have to find some way to give your audience exposition otherwise they will be lost as to what is going on. This is basic storytelling 101. You can't start in the middle of things and not explain or show what has been going on up until that point in some way.

Take Kill Bill Volume 1 for example. First we see Kiddo on the floor all beat up and then Bill shooting her. Next scene after the credits is Kiddo coming out of the Pussy Wagon and ringing on the door of some cute house. Then a woman opens the door and Kiddo punches her in the face. Granted it's quick, but by the time we come into the movie we already are right into the Inciting Incident and Copperhead isn't even the first of the five that she killed at that point. A good bulk of the movie is told in flashbacks as was Reservoir Dogs. So even if the movie doesn't start at the very beginning we see it unfold as the story goes on. Taratino chose to do it in flashbacks. You don't have to do it in flashbacks. You can do it any way you want to, but it HAS TO BE DONE.

This is the point I have been making since: >>2321821
You can argue XYZ, but thousands of years of SUCCESSFUL, story and storytelling back me up on this one.
>>
>>2324923
nice
>>
>>2325285
Not OP but what's wrong with you? The story isn't starting in the middle, the first part of the story was posted in an older thread and OP is just starting with the newer pages. All your points are moot; the story is being told in order, you just missed the first episode. You were told this in your very first reply. The crow guy's origin was shown in those pages, if you're not satisfied with that because of the surrealist stylings of it and you want to know why is he a crowface and all the rules of this world and all this other info instead of just accepting that this is a crowheaded man who came from cat vomit and who vomited a friend for himself, then that's on you not understanding the story on a different level, that's not OP breaking the storytelling process.

Read comics that you like and see what they do right and wrong. Really examine them and see what makes them click. This is the basics of how anyone wants to make something in a medium (Film, TV, video games, etc).
