Do the part of the body you can do the least, but with a minor deformity.

Here's your study:
1. Find visually appealing linework. You'll be painting over it - goal of this exercise is to learn how to render, not how to draw.
2. Do at least 2 quick (10 minutes) lighting studies (thumbnails) to decide on what lighting situation will show your object in the best way.
3. Fully render it. Do it in a grayscale, while making sure that values are correct. Spend at least 1 hour at this task.

Fun fact: this was a live demo he did and when he stopped it at this stage and said it was done the audience was not impressed and were all "that's it?".
>>2317776
not everything mullins painted is good kid. this shit is absolutely not worth studying
>>2317729
good one
>>2317776
i see value in this, its a good thumbnail and block in and hesture.
>>2317793
To be fair the demo was a group of non-artists. I'm sure if we were shown the early stage of a musical composition before it was refined at all we would think it's pretty shit too.
>>2317801
I wouldn't think it was shit, I would think it wasn't finished. There are still things to appreciate in the beginning stages. How many great songs started out with just an interesting riff or simple drum beat? Or even someone just whistling or humming something? I think not being able to see potential in something to be refined into something great is the mark of a true amateur. Most people around here never take a look at the actual process of how any of these painters build up a piece, everyone just expects it to look like a finished piece off the bat, and if it doesn't they just say it's shit. They don't know how to give direction on how to arrive at Sargent, they can only tell you it isn't Sargent. Nobody ever looks at Michaelangelo's tons of studies for the Cistine Chapel, just the painting itself and try to replicate it then wonder why they can't and how to bridge the gap. You learn so much by looking behind the scenes and people here don't get that.
>>2317809
Yeah that was basically my point though. That they were amateurs watching and didn't recognize what he was doing. I picked music as an example of a different artform that I assumed people here would not be as familiar with, but maybe it was a bad example. Anyways, ordinary people can't make that jump in their head from thumbnail to final. They just see the thumbnail and it doesn't look like what they think art looks like so they think it is bad. Most people who don't do art imagine art progress is more like doing a tight linework and then filling it in from one corner to another, fully finished in each section.
>>2317814
I was moreso trying to expand on your music analogy and agree with you than admonish you, I could tell you were on my side about it. I didn't really word it correctly. With your other point though, that's what frustrates me so much is that it's bad enough that people who don't draw can't envision how a thumbnail can show any sort of skill, but they have at least the excuse of not doing it. However when I see people here, where supposedly artists are giving other artists help, not being able to understand a thumbnail for what it is and say something stupid like "beginner thread go" when if they saw one of that same artist's finished pics they'd be asking for their blog it irritates me.
>>2317820
Eh, that doesn't bother me. /ic/ always has been filled mostly with amateurs and beginners. If someone says something ignorant I'll step in and correct them. If anyone here blindly accepts advice from an anonymous beginner (or maybe even a troll), then that's the fault of the person listening. Anyone here who is serious about art does not take anything here seriously.
>>2317729
Sorry for the animu face.
>>2317824
>Anyone here who is serious about art does not take anything here seriously
Ah, you're right, actually. This place is only really valuable for the spectacle anymore. There are still instances of getting really good info about something but I need to look at it this way from now on. It'll make my life easier.
