you guys are so lazy about making new draw threads. anyways heres this. i tried doing something different with the plates because I think the way they are hatched is too stylistic, and not helpful enough. obviously there's no substitute for life drawing but I felt like this was better practice for me than doing a million vertical lines.

You're missing the point of the Bargue plates. They're supposed to be long continuous lines so that the drawing as a whole doesn't fall apart which is exactly what happened in the second drawing. Each line drawn has to relate to every other previous line drawn but what you're doing is drawing a line in space, forgetting where you put it, then drawing another line, forgetting where you put it and then drawing another line and so on. It looks broken. There are parts that are 3D but they're on different levels so it looks flat as a whole.
>>
>>2308180
Top left definitely reads the best, the middle and lower ones cut off at a weird angle and make the side of the ankle look less cylindrical and more flat.
>>2308181
Head is proportionally very large compared to the rest of the drawing. Also structurally not much of the face makes sense, the ridge of her nose near the eye on the right in particular sticks out to me.
>>2308210
I'm digging the rendering in this, I wonder if the darks could be a bit more exaggerated to push it further. Love the detail of the bird skull though, reads well.

the forefront leg seems a bit off. Maybe try straightening out a little more and removing the awkward curve around the characters ankle. the rest of the body seems well proportioned. All in all just try toning down the curve on the tibia and you should be fine.

Foot fix.jpg

>>2308221
When you rotate your foot on the x axis like you have in the drawing here, it seems you've tried to emphasize the rotation of the lower leg as well. So what you have done is drawn the inner calf muscle bulging out as it follows the twist of the foot. (understand what I mean?) This doesn't happen in real life. Your lower leg does not have bones that twist, you can lightly rotate your ankle but that's it.

So to fix, just draw the lower leg a bit more normally, as though it's not twisting as much and it'll look better.

His foot doesn't quite look like it's planted on the ground You've drawn the foot shape like an even wedge, same width at the top as it is at the bottom. Emphasize the widening toward the toes.

I was about to say his balance looked off, like he might fall backward but it seems he's just on the edge. Though I guess taking into account the weight of the sword thing I think he is actually off balance. A simple remedy would be to move his leg back even more to sturdy himself.

>>
>>2308412
Better, but still not quite there. Try looking up some reference of whatever you want the material to look like. Since it's a dark blueish colour it's probably painted or tinted somehow. Take a look at what that armour is like in real life: http://www.ageofarmour.com/images/black_gothic_armour_med.jpg

This one is black so maybe not exactly what you are looking for, but do some research.

Also keep in mind that metal isn't simply "white stripey highlight!". It's a specular reflection, so notice how in the photo I linked it's the sky that's being reflected, and the planes which are reflecting are only those with a specific angle. Something less polished or under slightly different conditions may look more like this: http://s51.photobucket.com/user/cobweb_diamond/media/blogger/article-1344795-0048949C00000258-457_472x332.jpg.html

Metal reflects its surroundings. You can't arbitrarily light it and hope it looks like metal. You see the nerd in this picture? The metal color is entirely dependent upon its surroundings, as well it's form and which direction it's facing. In this particular image, you can clearly see which pieces are facing the grass and which pieces are facing the sky. You can see the form.

In your image with two white stripes, I can see you're trying to make it look more rounded, but the shape, judging by the lighting, honestly makes no sense. I think once you understand the shape and how to capture the light, your metal will look more like metal. Texturing metal isn't the difficult part after all, you just have to keep it hard. It's the specularity that makes it difficult.

You spent all that time rendering, but you didn't take the time to set up an interesting composition or choose objects with any relation or meaning.

Anyways, it's somewhat a matter of taste, but it's too literal I think. There's no sense of play, no sense of artistry, no YOU in it. It's just a very clean and factual image. From a viewer's standpoint it is no better than a photo. I realize it was likely an exercise, but I still feel you could have made more interesting decisions in it (as opposed to no decisions like now).
>>
>>2308438

I think it could do with some softer edges. Use harder edges at focal points and softer edges at points where you want less attention. Soft edges receeds, and sharp edges come forward. It kind of looks like all of the objects are drawn with the path tool in photoshop. It's a good start but needs some variety if you want it to read as more naturalistic

don't scribble. lines should follow the form of the body. try not to be stylistic with how you do shadows, just draw what you see even if you think it's too dark. and draw the hair, no reason to be lazy when you have a girl's long hair in front of you. it's a great chance for practice.

also don't leave such large areas white. she's not a light source.
>>
>>2308678
Not involved, but basically you're saying to put more time into it, aren't you?
>>
>>2308673
Good proportions, but you are overemphasizing things when it comes to values. Like it looks like you were taught a few tools to use and then just misunderstood and are applying them really crudely. I'm talking about how you are making the core shadow really dark and uniformly thin, then the main shadow shape a lighter tone (but you handle it incorrectly so it gives the impression of chrome or something and does not accurately describe the form), you are outlining your cast shadows too harshly, and you are overly concerned with shadow shapes to the point of emphasizing some ugly and unnecessary ones like the shapes near her right armpit (our left). It looks as though you are stuck on the specifics and then lost sight of the whole image. Nothing relates, nothing is handled as a part of the whole.

Squint at the figure more and try to treat it as a whole.

>>
>>2308668
Stop it. Your "lol random abstract shapes and figures" are terrible. They are just that, "lel random", as you don't know how to purposely do them and work them into the composition, you don't know how to design them as pleasant shapes. You just doodle them when you can't draw what you really want, just like I used to do in fourth grade. You think it's fun to draw these, whoever frustrating, but to look at it's just an unpleasant as fuck mess.
I don't know if you find them humorous as well, but I feel I should add that they are not funny, they are disgusting.
The hatching, bold outlines, the forms... If I would dare to describe how all of this reads to me, I would say it looks like clumps of petrified flesh, theses are clumps of flesh with cellulite which are being shitted fresh and wet and then they petrify in mid air.

I don't know if I am close to succesfully explain how much I hate this.

Thank you. It hurts to hear but i know you're right.

I hurried some aspects because i was limited to 3 hours, and i drew it quite large (A1 paper). Maybe next time i will bring charcoal instead.
>>
>>2308688
lol, go get some fresh air
>>2308689
nah keep trying pencil. maybe you just need a wider range of values. I think you would really struggle with charcoal since you are so precious with dark areas. It might be a bit overwhelming. I'd say keep doing pencil.
>>
>>2308693
Don't worry Brian, I am getting plenty of fresh air from out here in the open where I am burning this shit ton of printed copies of you drawing
>>
>>2308689
You had three hours for that? I know that different people work at different speeds, but that is a decent amount of time and you should be able to get a bit further along I think. Perhaps using larger drawing media like charcoal or graphic sticks would help cover large areas of value and also would help you keep large value masses instead of having that patchy appearance. It would probably help you to start off with a 2 value image--just lights and darks separated. Then you can use what time is left to bring in subtleties and transitions and a greater value range.

I suggest looking at people who have good use of shadow shapes without it feeling mechanical. Mark Tennant's drawings take value massing and separating lights and shadows to the extreme, but they are still very nice. Francis Vallejo is worth looking at too, he has amazing values and simplifications and is great at keeping things from ever getting stiff.
>>
Anyone got a place where I can get good quality reference for metal and shit? Metal armor in particular. Just google it?
>>
>>2308701
Look up Renaissance fairs or various battle reenactments or jousting. There's large communities that are dedicated to building armour and then they meet up and you can find tons of photos of them outside in natural good lighting. It's way better than looking at shitty photos of old armour in museums that are lit from a shit ton of random lights.

See, now that's what you don't seem to understand: MSPaint guy sucks.
He doesn't make interesting pieces, he just scribbles on MSPaint. And that's the problem with abstract art, you don't know who is a genius and who sucks, because in reality every one of them sucks. MSPaint guy is just some guy who sucks at composition, he sucks at figure drawing, he sucks at forms and colors. So that's how he masks all of his flaws, "I am just drawing this askewed burn victim goblin woman because I want to. It's my style", "this castle is not just two brick walls and these figures are not just stickmen it's my style", even when he draws porn it's "my style".

Pica related, it's his porn.

More saturation and less relying on the eyedropper to blend. With something like fire, you really have to deliberately select your colors, if you try blending before the colors are perfect it winds up adding a lot of grey to it which kills the effect.

What you should do for this:

See how parts of the flame are more see-through than others? the darker parts of the flame have less flame particles in them that is why they are less bright. Ignore that. When painting flames, use only high saturated orange and yellows with tints of high saturated reds around the edges, fill it all in evenly and then after the fact ERASE bits of it to create the see-through-ness. It preserves the saturation and keeps you from unintentionally adding greys.

I finished this pencil drawing the other day. Before anyone asks, I did a very very rough trace for the proportions of each character. But all of the faces, the details on the clothing, and anything in the background was all free hand. Scold me if you want, but I need help with something else.

I want to paint over this drawing in Photoshop. I want to paint it in grayscale first and add color to it after. What's the best possible method for me to do that? I was doing fine for a bit, but I'm not liking how the first face is coming out and I seem to be at a loss when I start on the clothing. I'm currently trying to airbrush it like I usually would but I feel like I could be using a brush with better opacity/flow.

Another thing, I've got this sketch on bottom with the base color/shading color layers on top. The base color layer is at 50% opacity so that I can still see the sketch underneath. This causes some confusion however, since I know when I finish shading on the shading layer, I'll crank the base color layer back up to 100% and it'll be twice as dark. It feels like I've created one big mess.

What would be the best method for me to paint over this sketch in Photoshop?

You drew her arm opening the robe in the most unsexy way possible. Her face with the huge nose could be excused if it wasn't for her awkward pose/ her neck.
She has a giraffe's neck, and it looks so stiff it looks like she is forcing it to go higher. What is giving me this impression is how long it is, the super detailed bones on the base of the neck, and the way her trapezius is down, even though her arm is suposed to be lifted. All of this corroborate to her not looking relaxed. She looks tense as fuck as she is forcing every muscle next to her clavicle to maintain this pose.

Also, her sister hand up hiding her boobs don't look natural. The left girl's pose kinda works by itself, but combined with the other sister's pose and the obvious hand placement, it looks as forced as the right girl's pose.

By the way, I agree with you, it's hard to get it right aesthetically, but come on anon, these are the lewd triclops sisters, they have to have a third eye. Don't fuck up these princesses. make their nose smaller, their faces rounder and find a way to make that third eye work

If I do well and they accept it they'll pay me like 200 bucks. If that happens I believe you get added to their pool of freelance artists. And I've been told that they pay well for freelance. Like 1.5 to 2 k or something which by my standards is fucking tip top considering what I've been doing for the past 6 months.

All that said, this could be a sinister ploy by them to get away with paying pennies for paintings.

I'm only really spending all nighters because I started late on this and I'm stressing about it. I've basically given myself 6 days to start and finish a full on illustration where normally I'd spread out the work hours over 2 to three weeks. And besides I haven't got anything better to do.

try working with a higher opacity brush, makes for better line economy. don't rely on a low opacity to blend; use the colour picker. IMO it would be nicer if the pink was warmer or you just did it monochrome blue. The jaw is a bit incorrect, it reads well as a thumb tho. here's what I mean w the colours

I guess you could say I do construction before hand? I draw in large simplified 3D shapes to get the shapes, their proportion, and their perspective down, then I just erase those lines redraw the lines you see. However I have a lot of the construction internalized when it comes to drawing humans so with a lot of erasing I can usually free hand the forms.

If you want to go digital, then save up and buy a tablet. Working with a mouse will yield terrible results, be slow and frustrating, and possibly lead to repetitive stress injuries like tendonitis.

Maybe playing with the shape of the feet more so they taper in even more. Just an idea, but like I said I don't do a lot of design work so that could be totally wrong.

He is not holding the sword properly. The blade of a sword/knife/axe etc. is supposed to align with the direction of the arm just like a gun. Unless you have done martial arts you might not pick up on it directly, but I think you would atleast subconsciously be able to tell that it doesn't look right.
Other than that, I'm concerned that it might look a bit unfinished but maybe their demands for polish is lower for art tests? In any case, good luck.
>>
>>2310262
I'm aware of the comp. It's not wonderful, but the whole point of the test is for them to see if you can paint their characters with the right amount of detail and accuracy. If I had the files I'd show you some of the ones they accepted, they're worse than mine.

I know, that was how it was originally. Had I planned better I'd have worked in a pose that let you see the top of the sword naturally but alas it didn't occur to me until last night. The planet looks like it's in the atmosphere, It looks this way because it's darkest values are darker than the darkest values in the sky. Notice how the shadowed part of our moon is the same color as the sky during the day? Same deal here, Your planet cannot go darker than your atmosphere obscuring it.

Much better already. Now taking into account where the light source is, There should be almost no light hitting the back side of the planet. The kind of light hitting the planet should create a crescent shape. You shouldn't be able to see any detail on the back of it. After you blacken all that out try pushing the lights of the crescent a bit to give it more contrast. Also, the rings around the planet will not only reflect light, but refract it as well. They will glow. Look at photos of taken from behind saturn the rings if in light, viewed from underneath or up top will be illuminated. For your planet's rings take into account the shadow of the planet being cast upon them. I can do a quick paintover to show you if you want

Ooooh Another problem I noticed, like anon, I didn't notice the little people there. And when I did, it didn't read that they were smaller than the alien dude. I figured hew as just closer to the viewer. To make this convincing you'd have to change a few more things. I'll do a quickie to illustrate it

you should stop polishing turds for days on end and start learning how to draw faces. cause man. that is one shitty face. any face would be better than that.

pic related: any other face than that one cause yeesh

Congrats on finishing in time. It's well rendered but lacks impact as an image. I think you could have pushed the lighting a bit more for more drama, and some more figures in the distance might have looked good if you had time. Maybe repainted the space marine's face too. All things considered though it's a good art test. Let us know what they say. I remember seeing Ross do the same art test last year but I don't think he got the gig: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/rR61m

Just think composition and think about the action of each character. It would be nice if they would use their weapon, now it looks like they are holding pose for the camera you know. You really need to improve composition and scene story because you are awesome and you can do that easily I think.

(here is sketchy example)
>>
>>2310244
Maybe the sky could use some warm color in contrast with the characters to make it more interesting? Anyway, it's great you made it on time, happy for you anon.

just redo the head and face. make it more manly these are space marines they're supposed to be gears of war levels of huge. my face isn't perfect, but it's better than the one you currently have even if you don't want to outright say it. With another hour yours would be leagues better than my paintover. Don't get lazy on the only human face in the image. It's supposed to be the most relatable part of the image really make it have an impact. hell do a few of them and pick the best. just. not. that. one. please.

The colors feels kind of dull and muddy to me, I'd prefer a contrast bump like this but that's just my opinion.
>>
>>2310409
That's not "your opinion", it's a matter of fact. It's also probably his major porblem, pretty much the entirety of his work is affected by dullness due to lack of value range.

The space marine looks like he's giving that ork a stern talking to.
>>
>>2310512
... really?
>>
>>2310518
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw that. It definitely looks like he's going "Hey man, you gotta remember, it's not cool, okay?" and the orc's like "Aw man..."
>>
>>2310523
now i cant fucking unsee it
>>
>>2310517
I see what you're going for but it doesn't quite work. It looks like the marine is patting the orc on the shoulder.

Also a 2 key points in the brief are very specific 1: No dark or muddy images!
2: We prefer to show events directly before or after acts of violence.

So it basically took physical contact off the table.
