It's good. It has lots of very good information and is more than enough for teaching yourself anatomy. But if you want to get good at figure drawing you need to supplement it with something like Vilppu or Bridgman and go to life drawing.

There is a very good 5-volume series called "Sketching Manga-Style" and despite the name, solidly covers fundamentals such as perspective, figure drawing, anatomy, etc. but done in manga style.
I highly recommend it

I own a hardcopy of this, it's got the worst diagrams I've ever seen in it
>>
>>2308759
Really? I was hoping it would be similar to Jeff Watt's style. How is the text?
>>
>>2308761
It's been a while since I read it. I remember the text being okay, like the information is solid but it's very hard to decipher everything because the diagrams are so bad. He just is really bad at drawing planes and then you get these jumbled messes. Like this is what a typical diagram is:
https://i.warosu.org/data/ic/img/0015/13/1375631991363.jpg

And there are much worse ones, or ones where he has to do a step by step so you can understand it but it's a pain to follow along and see as he keeps making it more and more (unnecessarily) complicated. The pencil drawings he has are also like...not bad, but they don't look good. Like they have zero appeal.

I got the book because I was interested in the Reilly method, but I think it is a subpar representation of the method.

I too found the book because I was looking up a book on the Reilly Method. Seems I'll be better off with youtube videos of its practitioners demonstrating it to a class, yet. Thank you anon.

Beginner question here, please bear with me :

Any learning book with a more manga/anime style?

I've started reading and watching some of the things listed in the OP and while it's all really interesting and obviously needed I feel like I can't fully relate and apply this to my artstyle/the style I'm aiming for.

I don't mean generic moe shits but still I'd like something, let's say, "in between".
If my question doesn't make sense feel free to be blunt and call me out on it.

sorry for mixing up the requests. I was indeed asking for the download link for bradleys book but about the pencil rendering i wouldn't mind looking for them on my own.

I was just curious about which are the most recommended ones. if I searched for art books about anatomy tons of not so good books will pop up along with the good ones and i cant download every single artbook with the word pencil in its title.

ive checked out the book links in the OP and in the sticky and manage get a solid 3-5 books for each folder on different topics like perspective or color theory but both pencil and drapery had only one book each.

Hey anons.

I got that book >>2295811 and I'm 50 pages in but it's awfully heavy. I'm on a toaster. The file is 256mo big and awfully optimized, the pictures inside are way bigger than needed, etc, and it's eating up 1.5giga of my memory when opened. Needless to say on top of randomly crashing I literally cannot even open Firefox/Chrome or foobar or anything while reading it. It's that bad.

I'd like to know if there's an image (jpg/png) version of it. I googled around to see if I could convert it myself but the file is always too big and the programs I tried were just plain malware shits. I feel hopeless.

Could anyone help me please?
>>
Anyone got the Charles Bargue drawing course? Been looking for it everywhere but can't find it.
>>
>>2314935
>file is always too big and the programs I tried were just plain malware shits.

Assuming you're on windows, wtf are you using? In the linux ecosystem there are several applications that can read a pdf and spit out images just fine without memory issues or viruses, such as the ghostscript interpreter or imagemagick (both sound shady, but they're legit), unfortunately for the average user, they're command-line applications, but that doesn't necessarily mean they have to be hard to use.

For example, if my terminal is in the folder where How_To_Render.pdf is located, I can run ghostscript as follows to get images of the pages of the file:
gs -sDEVICE=pngalpha -o page-%03d.png -sDEVICE=pngalpha -r144 How_To_Render.pdf
Running this will output files called page-1.png, page-2.png, page-3.png, etc.
Alternatively, I could use imagemagick's "convert" command to achieve something similar:
convert -density 144 How_To_render.pdf[0-275] page.png
Which will also output files called page-1.png, page-2.png, page-3.png, etc.
If I understand correctly, the number 144 represents DPI (dots per inch), ideally you'd perhaps want to use the pdf's native DPI, if such a thing exists, so that you're not wasting time resizing the image of the pdf.

There's a windows build of imagemagick. Not entirely sure if there's a windows build of ghostscript. There's probably many other command-line programs that do something similar anyway, I think inkscape has a command-line interface to it's image export functionality.

I could run the program for you but the conversion is painfully slow and makes my laptop CPU fan scream, and I'm too lazy to fire up my desktop.
>>
So, the people who read color and light, how exactly is it eye opening if it's just a series of pictures and seemingly no tutorials?
>>
>>2315036
He explains about color theory, how light works and how to use the gammut mixing
>No tutorials.
the book only shows you theory and you need to paint from life to understand.
>>
>>2314935
>>2315032
Disregard this, there are dedicated command-line tools that does a better job of processing pdf files, namely, xpdf's "pdfimage" command (there's a windows build from foolabs).

For example, if your terminal is in the same folder as How_To_Render.pdf, run the following to convert the pages into images
pdfimages -png How_To_Render.pdf page
This will output files called page-001-000.png, page-002-001.png, page-003-002.png, etc. (I'm not sure why the numbers are formatted that way)

I think the above solution returns the best results, since DPI doesn't need to be specified, which suggests that the pdf pages are (probably) being processed at their native resolution, ie. there' (probably) no CPU spent resizing images into a specified DPI (unless you want to resize the pages, the native resolution of my version of How_To_Render.pdf turned out to be painfully massive)
>>
>>2315047
PS: the windows version of pdfimages.exe only outputs jpg files, you have to use pdftopng.exe to process a pdf into png files. However, for art book pdfs (and especially pdfs that are just scans of art books), it is probably best to use jpg files instead of png
>>
>>2312771
anyone?
>>
>>2315032
>Assuming you're on windows, wtf are you using?

First thanks for taking the time to help me.

I downloaded xpdf (xpdfbin-win-3.04) but I honestly have no idea how to proceed from here. None of the .exes do anything when clicked on.

>>
>>2315401
No problem mate. For the sake of other readers I'm gonna clarify how one might want to proceed from here anyway >>2315396

The .exe files are command-line applications, double-clicking them will not display a window with buttons, it will instead display a terminal window that will very quickly close itself, because the .exe you ran hasn't been told to do except print the following help message, like any good command-line program, then quit:
>pdfimages version 0.30.0
>Copyright 2005-2015 The Poppler Developers - http://poppler.freedesktop.org
>Copyright 1996-2011 Glyph & Cog, LLC
>Usage: pdfimages [options] <PDF-file> <image-root>
>...
To use a command-line program in any meaningful way, you first have to open a terminal window and invoke the .exe from the terminal, by typing its name, a filename for it to process, and then hitting enter.

For immediate results in your particular situation, simply copy-paste pdfimage.exe (from the xpdf.zip downlpads) into the same directory as the pdf you want to convert. Then open a terminal like cmd.exe from the Start Menu, and "change the directory"to the one where both the .exe and .pdf located by using the "cd" command.
That is to say, type the following and hit Enter if your username is Foo and the relevant files are located in a folder called HowToRender on the desktop
> cd C:\Users\Foo\Desktop\HowToRender
You can invoke "dir" to display the files/folders in the current directory.

Then, invoke pdfimages.exe and it's relevant functionality by typing its name and some parameters (such as a filename) and hitting enter. For example, to convert How_To_Render.pdf into separate jpg files, type the following into the terminal and hit enter.
> pdfimages.exe How_To_Render.pdf page
Doing this will execute pdfimages.exe, which will output files named page-001.jpg, page-002.jpg, page-003.jpg, etc. in the same directory as it was invoked from.

Is there any point to buying a book with all these resources available?

The reason I ask is because I have a giftcard for 25 bucks at a book store and I was thinking about getting a book that was not available for free like Drawn to Life.

As a beginner should I just keep sticking to loomis and then move on to these other people in the OP?
>>
Requesting this.
>>
>>2316580
Drawn to Life is pretty awesome. I like to flip through my copy a decent amount and just reread a random section. I do the same with The Art Spirit.

Having physical books is better imo because you can flip through them easier and having it on your desk means you are more likely to actually read and use it than having a file hidden away in your computer somewhere that you need to find and open then is a pain to read because it's on a screen.
