lean reflectiveness, rather than looking for tuts on how to paint armor.
ruanjia is not the best example, his armor designs look more like stone or painted metal

There's recently been some dude on Youtube who's been uploading informational videos about 15-16th century armour and demonstrates how he puts it on and how he moves around in it. It's a really good reference for how armour works in 3D space! He also touches on the history of some of the armour he wears and the practical purposes for it all. I feel it's really important it understand how armour really works on the body and why it's made the way it is for people who want to learn how to draw it convincingly, as most people just want to draw cool, yet unpractical, designs.

Ruanjia's armors look better than real armor though. That's what good artists are supposed to do, don't just copy life, but make it look better than life.

If I had to hire an illustrator and had the choice between Ruanjia and some dude who paints perfect, 100% accurate armors, I'd pick Ruanjia any day.

its not about what you want rather what the project requires

I never understood this kind of questions. What's the difference what subject matter it is? I get that drawing a fur and a rock can be different, but basically You have to understand a form, and draw it with having perspective in mind (or just do a grid). Then You render it if needed- keeping in mind how less and more reflective surfaces bounce off light. If You need to design it, study how armour is structured, and find references that follow Your briefing. Then proceed with what I wrote above. Pic unrelated.

and that's why you aren't hiring any illustrators any time soon.

Draw plates of metal over top of the human form which still allow for movement at joints.

And don't fucking show cleavage or midriffs on armored babes. And don't do plate armor with built in boobs. Unless you want your work to look like it was made by a manchild that likes anime and has a doll collection.
