I like the way you drew the hands there..it's like you have a really great "grasp" (ohohoho) on how to draw hands. And your crosshatching/hatching is really beautiful, you seem to hit all ranges of light and dark, and it seems like you aren't afraid to do so. Your linear ones are great too.

Without even having seen the reference, I can say this is wrong. Real people don't have animu jawlines, and I say this as a total weeb. The only thing I can figure is there may be some alignment issues with the eyes, and it's possible the jaw could be a little smaller on the right but all in all I think the picture is fine and anything else would just be nitpicking. Better to just finish it up and move on at this point.

Damn, this is neat. I feel like if it were me, i would turn all those random roots and shapes into human figures. I think that's what I like about this picture though, it looks like they SHOULD be human figures, but they're not. I'm sure you could make them humans if you wanted. I don't know, that's just what I think would be cool.

This is super super early. There's going to be another figure in the background doing something, and there's going to be some waves sloshing up and maybe snow. Just curious what you guys think of her pose/the general colors

I swear to fucking christ images are darker on 4chan than they should be. I lightened this thing twice.
>>
>>2293860
These are mostly good. But if we're to number them top left to bottom right:

1: This looks all sorts of messed up, from this angle the nose should be higher. Generally that little line that denotes the start of the bridge of the nose should start near the top of the eye lid, so viewing it at this angle, It should be higher. And thus the nose 'triangle' should be higher up as well. If you look up at people's faces the visible length of the nose is almost always shorter than you'd expect (if this makes sense. Sooo in this picture the top line of the nose triangle should at least be level with just above the bottom of the eye ball....

Fuck this I'm just going to do a paint over brb

Cool planar qualities. Couldn't read it from the thumbnail though because of how the light values of the hair blends in with her skin.

>>2293757
This has a nice vibe to it even at this early stage. Do you have a refined drawing that you're working off of? If not- I really suggest you to. When I'm working with traditional mediums I realized what a big difference having a good drawing makes. It really takes a lot of guesswork out of it, and makes the process less painful. It's something that's super easy to ignore with digital, where you can always revisit and revisit and revisit, but I think that flexibility can be a disadvantage as much as an advantage.

>>2293781
It looks pretty good to me. Good craftmanship. Very obviously from a photo, of course, which is kinda awkward. But overall good job. Some more lost edges would be nice, working more wet. Now apply your knowledge to an illustration :)

>>2293867
This is great! Reminds me of Tomer Hanuka in the best way possible. Colors are nice and tasteful. Maybe some rimlighting on the figure could give it a wee bit more impact- just a suggestion.

i think maybe just fix up the hand a bit, give the fingers a little bit more volume and variate their pose a bit more.
>>
>>2294221
It's just kindof lifeless. There's no pizzaz to his pose
>>
>>2294284
Personally I could forgive the lifeless pose if at least the perspective and construction were right.
>>
>>2294200
What the fuck's going on with his head, it's flat as a pancake.
What the fuck's going on with his arms, even accounting for perspective, the one in the back looks way too long in the forearm
what the fuck's going on with the vinyl needle, it looks like spaghetti. His scratching hand looks broken.

For a piece where the character is the main focus, you don't seem to have given much thought to his anatomical construction.

Is the guy's pose too samey or does it work?

Also is the small lamp thing too distracting? I'm thinking it's a really cold environment (I know I could better portray that with her posture but oh well..) so i thought she might have a little fire thing to keep her hands warm. What if I put it somewhere else?
>>
>>2294179
great job! it looks really good
>>
>>2294463
I like it. Imo, it's small enough to not distract the eyes and still add some subtle "light" to the piece.
>>
>>2294463
I think the lamp works. It's another extension of the triangular composition you've got.

You're probably gonna fix the pebbles but just in case, the ones approaching the viewer dont gradually grow in size enough, making the two on the lower left look a bit jarring.

I really like this, though. Especially the tilted profile of the woman.

try flipping the green guys pose so he is crouching facing the girls pose, so it creates a tighter composition, right now the work has a strong left wise narative, as if something important is to the left. if the green guy was facing more towards the female this would set a scene within the framing that adds importance to the set.

right now my eyes are lost to the left.

I wish I could articulate why this is a bad suggestion. Intuitively I know it's wrong but I can't think of how to say why. It might be that I'm falling asleep right now. There were actually a shit ton of typos in this very post that I've had to go back and correct and even this sentence too, damn. Anyway I just want op to know at least one person votes against this.
>>

so..
>its wrong, i can't explain why but it is.
>im also tired and can't think straight.

You are not making your point very strong.
I on the other hand am very rested, have perfect motor skills and given detailed reasons behind my opinion.

But it was merely a suggestion, i might flip the character myself to see the effect right now.

Its totally up to OP seeing as it is his image, it just feels very weighted to the left even though a majority of the drawing is on the right.

Dunno about guys ducking on their toes, we usually avoid that imo, as only very skinny guys can do it efficiently, their legs nicely pack together and they can even set their heels down in that pose, providing more support. I'd rather kneel or something if it was for a longer period than 20 seconds as it gets hard on the calves.

you need to do figure studies of actual women, i recommend doing 500 2 min studies, this will take you about 3 days with breaks if you apply yourself. after that you will have a sound understanding to the beginning of hard work.

after that you might want to read any book by loomis or glen vilppu.

if you cant achieve doing 500 figure studies i seriously recommend visiting the beginners thread, as that is the designated paddle pool for shits who can't apply themselves.

Hmmm. I'm definitely not against this composition, it does work better I think. I'm just not sure how to spin it in such a way that still captures what I was going for.

I've done a few pictures with these characters and I wanted to show with this one how non-plussed he is toward her. He almost acts like she isn't there and so gutting some fish in the water she's using just doesn't phase him.

It was going to take place on a rocky beach with the ocean to the left and he was supposed to be looking off into nothingness but maybe if I put a little stream or something running between them.

AH decisions decisions

I'm still going to check this thread for more suggestions.

Regarding the boring pose I agree with you both. But that wasn't my main focus with that drawing. I made that just to have something to paint. I'm kinda trying to evolve my painting skills.

That character is actually an original character that I created.
I just felt like doing a more detailed paint job.

Start using colors.
The best way to learn how to color is to actually try coloring.

You aren't going to evolve or learn if you keep avoiding it.

hey im the 2 cents guy, you could have him facing "away diagonal right" if you know what i mean, like he is letting her exist next to him but is not totally ignoring her, but at the same time wanting his space.

i just think that this composition better explains that there is a connection between the characters other than her stumbling upon his fishing grounds.

Hey thanks for the crit anon. I like what you did with the colors! It's a bit lighter than I want to go for, with what I have in mind for the background though, and I just really want that greenish tint to it. About the brush I dunno what to say really, I'm using a hard round on 100% opacity, only 50% flow, but I'm not too worried about the spacing, it usually gets smoothed out as I build on it. Sorry the pic was too big as well, I did shrink it but not enough I guess, hopefully this one is better. Lastly, I hope you're not disappointed but I'm not painting this for the love of goats, it's just because some anon suggested a goat, heh. But they are pretty great. Anyway thanks again, I may still use something from yours, probably something in the way you did the spot around the eye.

beginner thread, probly 3.5/10 maybe 4. Try learning to draw things without using symbol drawing and try making your faces more cubic. All in all, go read a sticky or use a reference and then try it at a different angle.

no, of course not, you lost all flow most likely, as well as the link between her neck and breasts is wrong, just superpose your image and the original and youll see where you fucked up. I dont have you ref so i can only guess at the mistakes from what I see, so next time link your ref as well.

broken neck, attachment on her right leg is a little off, other than that its mostly neat proportion wise, id suggest a study to learn the details of anatomy as opposed to the gist because you got it down.
>>
>>2295153
His pose feels a bit off. Try holding some things in your hands that are equivalent to what he is holding (broom, hamper lid, whatever is lying around) and walk around feeling how you move your arms and legs and torso. Look in a mirror as you walk. You will find lots of things about the pose this way.

Also the rimlight is very boring at the moment, it is too much an outline. Think about the planes it hits. Will it be narrower in some places? broader in other? brighter on a part? darker in another?

Why is he in his boxers? If he were heading to battle he likely would have at the very least some sort of heavy wool clothing for protection. Maybe a helmet or some mail. The shield would be placed more over his forearm too. And he should have some hair probably too. You've removed everything from him and now there is nothing to your image.

That was my original idea. THe guy was going to be strolling toward her out of the water carrying a huge sack of fish. but to be honest I just really wanted to paint him up close so I could show what he looks like.

I also love wide open spaces, but not at the expense of having the character be tiny and undefiled.

The overall picture and composition is more important that a single part. Don't sacrifice the whole image for the sake of painting more detail on a character you like.

I think this is coming together fairly well for being a random exercise. At least I got as far as blocking in some kind of background this time. I don't think I'll spend too much more time trying to polish this one, I would rather save that effort for redoing it with a more interesting pose and composition. Still, I'd be interested to hear what I could improve if I were to do it over.

It looks sick man, you got a blog?
Honestly, It's a generic powerful pose for polearm users, so I don't really connect the two in my head. I'd love to see this colored if you decide to keep it.

I was debating between keeping it smooth, giving her just the two nostrils or giving her a really sharp and upturned nose. Right now keeping it smooth seems to be looking good
>>
>>2295618
It specifically states "...you should not use it [charcoal] as a beginner without instruction; the use of charcoal presents too many difficulties to solve by yourself."

If you insist on using charcoal then I would suggest you work at a much larger size. Also the book's reproductions are not that much larger actually. The book even suggests scanning the plates and printing them larger at a print shop.
>>
>>2295644
Thanks dude, I'm glad you're not just pissed lol. When I realized it I was like oh fuck but like you said, it's just such a go-to sort of stance for someone holding a spear, even in the reference of the Dynasty Warriors guy he was standing similarly. I'm glad this came up anyway though because I hadn't considered what to do with that part of her face either. I like the idea of like some nostril slits, I might try it, now that I won't have to throw this out. It's just for a drawthread request anyway. I do like it thus far though so I was planning on rendering it but I suck so much with color, so we'll see how that goes. As for a blog well... I do have one but it's just full of really goofy fanart and cartoony shit right now. I'm thinking I might start another page for more artistic, I guess, things. Anyway, I'm glad you're still working on yours because I liked your initial sketch a lot and I like where it's going. I'll continue this one, and we'll meet back up here & share.

that sounds expensive... but i really want charcoal practice so maybe that's the way to go
>>

If you just want practice with charcoal just go to some life drawing with it and some 18x24 newsprint.

Henry Yan's book also covers a little bit on different types of charcoal and different ways to use it.

>>2293735

I like how even though this is abstracted, there's still a clear focal point based on how clear the contours and edges making up her face. That cool color for the neck also feels like just enough to balance all of those subdued warm colors around it. I wish I was more articulate, because I'm sure there's something else I'm missing for why I like this.

A few problems.

I want to make the city stand out more in the midground. Perhaps there's a different colour - i.e. not blue - that I could use for the buildings, that still works with the existing colour palette?

I would also like to add some kind of foreground presence, like a human figure to make a narrative. Perhaps a runner? I really like the way that Simon Stalenhag juxtaposes simple human characters to contrast to he futuristic quality of his paintings.

Also are the values are okay?

Did this after a while. That hand got swollen, so left it out from the focus. Ballpoint is not my usual thing, but it was fun.

Crits please. I'm unhappy with my current level of copic/line work skills. Any criticism would be great (or even recommended readings/tutorials).

The one fucking time I post a mobile pic where I actually expected itself to flip itself, and it didn't flip.

Fuck it, I repainted the whole thing trying to learn from my mistakes. It's a commission btw so I had to follow guidelines regarding the design.

I mean it's okay but ultimately really boring. What was the brief? What were the design restraints?

I feel like the design of the dragon is dull, the pose is awkward (what is he even doing? think more about the action and intent behind the pose), the colours are a brown mess, the composition is basic, the vignette and the bg feel lazy etc. It kind of feels like you took the safest most boring solution for every single choice in the painting.

Looks better, I still hate the design and pose though. The shadows look a little washed out by the light to me, I think you should go in with some blue or purple to make them stronger.

How's this?
>>
>>2297059
It looks alright but some minor issues with it include: the nose (especially how it transitions to the mouth), the ear iisn't as simplified at the rest of the head, and the bangs look bad. Hand is slightly manly and lacks the confidence of the other areas. The volume of her rib cage looks odd. The left foot (her right) can have the toe area redrawn. On the right boot (her left) the ellipse of the top is showing way too much of the inside. It is close to the horizon line and should be a lot flatter.

>>2297064
Cool, let me see if I can fix some of that.

Okay I changed what I could. I really don't think I should've changed the front part of the boot but I guess I'm stuck with it now. Also I didn't know what you meant by her ribcage looking "odd" so I messed with a little but in the end didn't change it really since I didn't know what was off. Other than that, I hope this looks better.
