Don't know if you're still around, but I was bored and decided to see if I could address some of the issues brought in anon's critique.
I originally wanted to just address the drawing. Your original drawing was a mix of things seen from below superimposed on things seen from in front and vice versa. Thinking about box forms, both for the figure as a whole and the individual parts helps a lot. We should be seeing the underside of the jaw, the underside of the breast plate, the underside interior of the shoulder piece, etc.
As for the painting, you consistently have issues with garish colors and blown out values. Maybe your monitor isn't properly calibrated? Have you tried viewing your work on another computer or an ipad?
I tried to centralize the value range, and simplify larger value groups. For the lighting I tried to do a soft blue light from above, and the brighter hard light from behind.
Though I didn't do a very good job at it, you want to find ways to draw attention to your focal point. I tried to draw attention to the head with the eyes brighter than the rest of the skin, the rimlight on the horns pointing to the face, and the green light on the archway also pointing to the head. Armor highlights are knocked down because that isn't the focal point.

>>2283375
Because he flipped his canvas :^)
Bought some new copic markers just for this, so far havn't had any major fuck ups.
>>2283476
Hey, good to see you still progressing anon. I'm liking the color choices. Are you going for a textured look to the color though? Those being Copic you should be able to get some really smooth blending.
>>2283479
Hey champ glad you're still around here, well I'll see what I can do with texturing when the base colors are all in place, I may keep it mostly simple, but this whole thing is supposed to be a practice and experimenting piece so I ma as well add some nice textures. Got any advice or links to some proper texturing examples with markers?
>>2283484
Heh, unfortunately I don't really know anything about marker rendering. I really need to look into it more honestly, since I actually do need to use it kinda often. And as much as I have used it you'd think I'd have learned more than the bare basics by now but I haven't lol
>>2283489
Damn guess I actually gotta do work for myself, I'll look around a bit. Also I was wondering if you have any art I could see? a link would be fine, ya just got me curious seeing how your the only person to respond to this like 3 times.
>>2283502
If you find anything good about the markers please let me know, I don't even know where to start looking.
Anyway yeah I've posted a bunch of stuff lately, >>2281257 and >>2283081 are a couple. Here's one of my marker things, since those are digital. I hope that's not over-doing it. I'm just kind of itching to know what people think of what I'm trying with that digital stuff, because I'm finally trying to tighten up my shit and develop a style.
>>2283507
I like your marker work, but you do need some more practice with that digital stuff, I'd liked to see a finished and cleaned up piece of digital stuff from you man.
>>2283511
Thanks, and yeah I intend to at least finish that picture of Snake. I have some finished digital stuff in my tumblr, if you looked at that, the cards reverse back to it, but none of it is pushed quite as far as I want it to be. Hopefully though I can make something interesting out of that Snake one and some of the other stuff I've been working on. Just a few days ago someone said something about wacom tablet settings that made it so much more comfortable for sketching and I feel like I can get better results now, I just gotta build up towards it. Then think of ideas for interesting pictures lol. I have to say, drawing that example Bowser really opened my eyes to some new possibilities when it comes to drawing digitally, so I'm actually pretty thankful to you for that. Anyway, are you going to be done with this in time to turn it in?
wip, how is this looking so far?
>>2283484
>texturing examples with markers
I've never found anything official, but here are some texturing things I tried with some trial and error. They may or may not be useful to you, and are probably terrible examples
>1-2 follow the general rules for color and light. Use a light marker for warm light (Y32), and then a light blue (B00) for cool light. Light your drawing from opposite sides.
>3 If you stipple the area with the brush tip it can make the surface look a little rougher or fluffier
>4 for blending if you go from blue to purple think in thirds. Do 1/3 blue, leave 1/3 white, and do the last 1/3 purple, then fill in the middle with a gradient. If you go a base of blue, then layer purple 1/2 on top the purple can be too dark.
>for blending keep the area wet, and use the brush tip with the lightest color marker, this may require refreshing the area with the lightest color marker.
>5 for texturing, the colorless blender is amazing. You can pool ink by holding it in place for a few seconds or dabbing the same spot. This will lighten the spot that you dab, and push the ink to the edges. If you do this a lot you can make a scaly surface - or make something look wet and juicy
>6 leave white space to make things shiney/smooth
>>2283524
Well its to late to do any major lighting like you suggest in 6, and 1 and 2 I can try but I'm afraid that it will make the current piece messy, 3 and 5 are really helpful and I may try to implement 3 into this for a rougher feel to his skin. This is great though and my next marker work I'll try to use all the advice I can from this. But for now I think only 3, and 5 have room. Oh and 4 I've kind of been using but not as well as in this image.
>>2283533
> its to late
happens to me all the time. I found the best solution is to just draw something new (don't get too attached). If you like the way something looks just leave it and draw a new thing to fuck around with.
Also, some anon mentioned that if you scan your linework, you can always reprint it later and color it again if you fuck up. The scan also helps to plan your colors and lighting digitally before markering.
>>2283366
Damn, very realistic!
>>2283523
parts of the dude are off perspective compared to the ground plane
>>2283537
That's a damn good idea I'll have to try that to. And I can't scrap this its for some shitty fan art contest that I'm entering in for practice, but I will take the advice given on future works.

>>2283364
THis is really cute
>>2283523
colors are mostly on point/really nice this has a lot of potential. I think that bridge(?) in the foreground is a bit random and hard to tell what it is. Maybe give it some more "bridge" like elements, or try to connect it to the midground by showing the base of the bridge on the far side. Also the character's blue and orange are very jarring when put in this environment (looks very saturated, maybe a good thing?)because it's the only instance found in the scene. I would try to tweak the colors to harmonize more, or putting some other elements of orange/blue will help, like a picnic blanket or whatever your story entails. lastly from the thumbnail, the bridge is kind of having a weird tangent with the river as they both meet the edges of the frame. hope that was helpful
>>2283366

prep for a big charcoal drawing, I'm lazy so I'm probably just going to project and trace the top right sketch onto the paper. Think the anatomy solid enough? Having a hard time finding/taking ref photos.
>>2283768
Looks really cool. Torso might be a little too long on the left big thumbnail, although it could just be that you haven't drawn pecs yet. Also hips are maybe a bit too narrow
>>2283215
I really like the movement and shapes in this. Could use more shape differentiation at the left side of the mountain. I agree with >>2283216
who said you should have done it in oil though. Or in anything traditional really. Or maybe even just use better digital brushes. Because the lines look kind of sloppy and pixelated, not smooth enough.

>>2283821
Probably because your inks look 100x better than your pencils and also it's just a portrait so you don't have people complaining about how you got the head too big or small for the body.

These from life? Not bad. You can use a darker pencil probably.
I think you can try to simplify more--what are the major planes? What are the shadow shapes? What is the essence of the rock structure? Take a look at this Edgar Payne sketch: http://www.derusfinearts.com/Art_Images/Medium/X-120-2.JPG
Notice how he captures the form and mass of it all? We feel the structure of it but there is very little detail. He's brought a sense of design into the image by understanding the rhythms and forms and knowing how to unify things or discard detail where necessary.
>>2283846
Yeah, it's the coast near where I live. Used a B for structure then a Hi Uni 2B for shading, it looks darker in my sketchbook, may need to fiddle with the scanner next time.
I totally agree about trying to get the shadow planes clear, it's just so easy to get distracted by details like crevices and such in the light areas.
>>2283598
I'd say no, since inks are usually black and white perm init line work, while markers include alot more things you have to consider when it comes to coloring and shading, so no.

You draw like my friend who I can never give advice to because I will hurt her feelings at least a little so instead I'm going to give advice to you.
Everything you draw is in this flat 2d style right? No foreshortening, no different angles ect. I would advise you to look at hampton or loomis and learn how to draw and create form and start trying to construct characters in a 3d space. Also finish your character please! If you practice drawing your characters feet down on a surface you will be as good as Da Vinci in 3 weeks. This really works!! Master artists HATE her!!!
Anyway sorry if I hurt your feelings Amelia.

>>2284010
>>2284016
Some very quick sketches.
I wanna do some face studies but I'm having trouble deciding. Should I grab some screen shots from movies/tv or should I use a model/pose ref photo?
>>2284012
Is that a dishwashing sponge?
>>2284031
you should use a model. ask a friend.
>>2284009
Thanks for the advice! I really was going to draw the feet but ran out out of page space, so I just cut it off
Recent from a picture I saw online
>>2284052
try the exercise where you draw what you see while never looking at paper at any point of the drawing.
it will loosen up your lines and improve your hand eye coordination. not to mention its just fun and frees your tensions
>>2284049
Sorry I meant a model photo/reference photo, as in one of those photos taken specifically for artist reference. Asking a friend isn't an option. I've been looking through some model photos and the lighting seems to kind of wash out their features. I think I'm probably gonna go with some screen shot.
>>2284055
Just draw draw draw. Don't make such a big deal out of it. At your stage it doesn't really matter as long as you observe and draw to the best of your ability. One tip I can give you though is that cinematography have more naturalistic and interesting lighting than portrait photography. There are sites dedicated to movie stills look it up
>>2284057
>At your stage
?
Anyway I just need to make sure I pick something that'll hold my interest or I won't follow through. I'm trying to look up some screencaps places right now, you wouldn't happen to know one or maybe a good movie/show to look for stuff from?
>>2284057
>>2284063
Actually never mind, I found one that has a shit ton. Man I remember the last time I tried searching for screen caps there was like nothing. The one place I had found kept getting wiped from existence. Now they're fucking everywhere, I didn't even think to look on tumblr too, the well goes deep.

>>2284175
>having a well done image of ominous stairs
>adding the most shittily drawn guy to it

>>2284184
I'm still working on it, genius. I scribbled the figure in to solidify my concept before continuing into rendering.
However, I'm not opposed to leaving out the figure, but the light source needs to come from somewhere.
>>2284170
>"fuck this gay earth"
>>2284170
I suggest that you start with a full view of the bathroom so that you can see that the dog is standing on a bathtub. I'm also not sure if the panel of just the window is necessary. I don't think a dog would pass out from just falling into a bathtub either, so you have to make it really convincing.
So is tablet drawing just another skill you have to learn, or do you guys draw your line art on paper and scan it? Do you have your keyboard beside you for shortcuts or do you just make due with the two buttons on the pen?
>>2284207
There's gonna be speech bubbles coming out the window when the page is done.
General context is the dog is confused/scared because it got locked in the bathroom, the asshole cat just left through the window (previous page) so the dog pushes her head out, then sees her family's car driving off in a hurry to escape.
I agree about the passing out thing; will have to take it up with the writer about it.
>>2284209
I don't do either. I just paint with shapes or overtop lines that are more akin to gesture drawing than actual linework. Unless you have a cintiq digital linework is going to be tedious and take a lot of work to look good, and even with a cintiq your lines will be inferior to those on paper.
Its a wip, but I know some people are fed up of looking at humans for studying so the ref is there too.
>>2284229
uuhh
are you sure that's accurate?
just glancing at the angles it seems wrong
try sketching first and choosing big blocks of paint
>>2284288
why are you shading the collar bone/chest area the same color the blush is?
>>2284301
>>2284301
I may be wrong, but the her left eye feels like it's hanging a bit too far out for the angle her head is in. Also might need to be rotated counter-clockwise slightly.
The ear anatomy is also kinda bizarre - I'm really not saying this just to be a bully or anything, but it looks a bit like you didn't know what goes where and just kinda put down what looked alright. Which is fine - that's part of the learning process - but you should look into how to properly break down the forms of the ear. It also seems to be facing forward a little too much; at that angle it should be facing outward to the right (her left) more.
Gotta be careful about perspective disagreement when drawing faces in that style, since the soft, minimalistic facial features don't give you very strong landmarks to go by.
>>2284316
>>2283163
>Inb4 "go back to /co/ faggot"
>>2284209
>is it just another skill to learn?
Yes. I learned to draw primarily on paper and didn't get my first tablet until about two years ago, and I still find it really clunky and awkward to use for sketching. On the other hand, some younger people I know have been using them basically since they started drawing, and their digital sketches always come out looking way more natural and controlled.
I've gotten fairly good at inking digitally though, so I'm probably going to switch to scanning traditional sketches to be inked digitally.
As for the keyboard thing, I art on a laptop, so I don't really have many options with regards to desk setup. The pen buttons are useful for panning and zooming but other than that it's all hotkeys for me.

I don't get it, the orange light is supposed to be coming from a creepy room at the end of the stairs, yet the stairs go on beyond the door? Has this character just been passing through a bunch of these orange lights on his way up?
These stairs look pretty open and not very creepy, and the way you made the wall on the left looks like we are seeing the protagonist trough a door...
Also, the two lights are distracting. Where we supposed to be afraid of what is around the corner? Because it doesn't work if the protagonist has a light that's so bright it illuminates the entire stairway. Sure, we still don't know what awaits us in the orange room, but it doesn't matter, because the stairway is so well lit it makes us feel safe.
You have been working on this for too long, it has been what? A month? Two? Is this something you want to finish or it's just to study textures? Because it's taking too long, and the atmosphere is kind of weak... I would suggest you move on, do other shit, then come back from scratch on this stairway thing with more experience and some references like this under your belt maybe.
Here is my take on it nobody asked for, just because
not quite done. gimme tips /ic/ i can take it.

>>2284341
Really sucks you can't post more than one picture at a time
>>2284340
Looks good, all except for the eye on the left, her right eye. I think it's too low possibly, and there's some other structural issues with it I just can't really pin down. This is just a nitpick but the mouth could've used more indication of an M type shape on the upper left towards the left side, it looks like it just slopes down and is sort of formless, a little bit of rim light on the middle dip would help make the shape look clearer.

>>2284752
I don't think you can expect any productive suggestions from that guy. Personally I like your stuff, and the number one thing people don't understand here is that to be marketable, you have to have a comfort zone. It's better to be master of one than a Jack of all trades. On higher level jobs, people hire you to do one thing, that one thing you're good at. If you're working your way up like a dog, then you need to be able to do a lot of different things to make yourself valuable. There's nothing wrong with being good at and known for one thing, as most famous artists are. That said though, I would like to see more diverse outfits from you, maybe an elegant dress.

Success is a broad term anon, so there is a logical fallacy in your question. I could rebuke with 3 artists I could go google, or I can simply refuse and disagree, either of which gets us no where. If buttering up people is what you wanna do- god speed. U r a fag btw
>>2284766
FURTHERMORE. I would like evidence of your experience in this 'industry' you speak of, which is another broad term. I am suspicious of broad terms, as it is a good indication of ignorance.
>>2285074
I'm pretty sure it doesn't say the word industry anywhere in that post at all. Anyway it's self evident, any artist you'd look up with noting is known for a specialty, past and present. I have better things to do with my time than play "pretend to be retarded on 4chan" with you. Post again, like I know you're going to since you're so desperate for attention, but you won't be getting any more from me because I'm hiding these posts and ignoring you.
>>2285076
Should say *worth noting, unlike the rest of this conversation.
>>2285076
I didn't say you used the word industry! Now you are getting things all mixed up by yourself. Poor thing. Quote un quote 'industry' where the ' means paraphrasing, as you mentioned someone working in an art related field as you mentioned in your original post. Silly girl.
Crits of anything, preferably the perspective. Been using vanishing points for the first time and it helps greatly in every panel i've had to do buildings, although I'm still not confident (grateful for the tips I received on perspective in the past).
Lighting is also a weakpoint.
>>2285246
You should read up on composition and storytelling for comics. You broke the 180 rule several times in this page, and I think the flow suffers for it.
>>2285125
milana vayntrub hnnnnnnng
>>2285247
I'll look up the 180 rule, thanks. The writer handles the storytelling part though; i'll let him know.
>>2285253
>The writer handles the storytelling part though
You handle the visual storytelling though. I do comics by commission and no matter what the client asks for in the scene, I'm in charge of making sure it looks appealing, including following visual rules they don't even know about. If they ask for something going left and I know it'll look better going right, I do it, and pretty much every single time, they end up liking what I did better and don't even know why. When you're looking into it, I recommend the Scott McCloud books - Understanding Comics and Making Comics. Other than that, there are some good storyboarding books like Don Bluth's The Art of Storyboard that're great at explaining visual storytelling and continuity. Good luck, anon.
>>2285246
Pretty cool. Don't forget to post when the panels are finished.
>>2285253
One more thing, the 180 rule isn't the only issue I'm seeing in these pages, so I really do recommend you read those books or some other source if you can, to gain more knowledge about it all around.
>>2285258
>>2285263
This was extremely helpful; thankyou. I didn't know Don Bluth had a book out, I'll defeinitely have a look! I already have access to the other books so I'll give them a read very soon on your reccommendation (flicked though one before and it was bretty gud).
If you can point out the big/fundamental errors I'll work on them first. I realize I already knew about the 180 rule, just forgot about it.
I don't mind doing big changes/overhauls though i'll have to fit them within the time restriction (couple weeks).
>>2285267
Well someone already pointed out a problem with establishing locations from page to page, that's definitely a big one. Also problems with optimally distributing elements within the space of the panel. Forgive me though, I'm very tired right now, probably heading to bed. Just kinda go through the books and make comparisons between your pages and what he talks about, see if you notice the issues he brings up. Glad I could help a little.

Thanks, guys.

Aaaa haha yeah I realized that myself.
Here's a rough sketch for an illustration + some colors in photoshop to figure out things before doing the final in watercolor/guache.
>>2284811
You shouldn't be. You also shouldn't lie.

Your dog in top panel has a head coming out of his ass
>>2284945
its odd she isnt holding the torch by hand, its kind of impractical to have it stuck in her backpack
>>2285343
again. it's fucking boring. it's like i've seen it 100 times before.
>>2285603
The same could be said of your comment.
Really, what kind of critique is that supposed to be? A real critique would be something like 'add more depth by emphasizing fore/mid/background' or 'you can get the eye moving around the picture with a splash of competing color as rimlight'. Don't just say "it's boring". I like it a lot myself, but I would probably suggest pushing the gestures a little more, especially on the guy, and the rimlight thing.
Am I missing anything or can wrap this one up?
>>2285603
It's not wth
Do you guys think Design can be learnt?
>>2285636
why is not letting me upload my pic dangit
>>2285640
>>2285636
Alright finally
>>2285617
I think it's boring too. I think it's that kinda disney style, I hate that. That's my opinion though so whatever.
WIP. Perspective totally fucked or salvageable?
>>2285680
>>2285636
Yeah design can be learnt but it's not easily taught. I suggest doing a bit of research on historical designs and see if you can pick up some of the shape language or way things are put together or layered. Then using this knowledge try to come up with some variations on your character while keeping in mind who he is and what you are trying to show. You want to have more than a generic "guy with sword and cape".
Long time no see
Streaming for a little bit twitch tv /milkmafia
>>2285343
I like the angle!
>>2285700
>twitch tv /milkmafia
you taste in music sucks...but i'm watching.
>>2285694
That's really cool. Perspective's fine, it's the figure that's all out of proportion.
>>2285712
Yeah? Like they're too big? If you follow the panelling round to the floor then the figure is like a fucking giant.
I''m kinda new to this, any tips please?
>>2285343
Do they end up banging after the party?
Composition is shit, but I'll have to revisit and adjust this later anyway. For now: done
>>2285958
Lovely feeling to it. Neat concept.
>>2285756
No, I mean the legs are short, and the front arm is too long.
Hi -
Anyone knowledgeable on ears that can give their thoughts on the general shape of this ear + the lighting? The other ear needs work too, but this ear in particular is a mess.
There needs to be a strong rim light, and the general shape of his ear is meant to be a bit long with big lobes.
Any thoughts? Paint overs & red lines highly appreciated - Thanks in advance!
>>2285958
pretty good start. keep digging, there's probably something you could do with a dreamcatcher on a windmill but right now the concept is "thing has wheel, dreamcatcher looks like wheel" which is the visual equivalent of a pun. You don't want a pun, you want a joke. You need a third thing that ties dreamcatcher and windmill together.
come at me bras.
I started this over today, since I thought of a better way to approach it, or at least I think it's better. I'm not entirely sure how to proceed from here though, whether to block in more values or define shapes and details more. This time I actually am looking for critique on it, btw.

Just look at a fuckton of ears and decide for yourself - this is how you learn
I normally can draw really good fire, but I could use an opinion on this since I havn't done it in such a long time. So is the fire looking good?

>>2285830
pussy too high! Pretty sure pussy holes arn't where dicks come out, they're lower. I think a clit is where a dick is. Makes sense.
not most recent but I liked how the yin and yang concept turned out
>>2286211
You should finish it. I mean, I know its finished but you should fix the letters and either ink it, paint it or digital. I suggest color. Keep working at stuff like this, it could be your thing.
>>2286215
im not huge into color personally I like black and white always have, but I could definitely work on that lettering, heres one where I actually used color
>>2286219
Switch mediums, colored pencil will never look good. Try watercolor pencil, then gradually move into watercolor if you like traditional.
>>2286384
I fucked my perspective hardcore on this but I had fun
>>2286383
Heh, this made me laugh. I like it a lot, I just think the rimlight could be a little cleaner or more solid though, cause right now it sort of looks like artifacting from a poor lasso selection instead of rimlight. It can stay thin, it just needs to look a little more intentional in a few areas. Other than that, great stuff!
>>2286388
You also fucked up by saving it as a jpg. It should be a gif or png - nothing more ugly than clean pixels being blurred by jpeg compression
>>2286140
Decided to go with blocking in more values I guess.
>>2286446
I see youve got capitalization down, but you still dont seem to be punctuating from the elbow at all.
>>2286467
Come on man...
Who /nevergonnamakeit/ here?
>>2286505
You're closer to making it than most people here, definitely me. At least you've got that coloring look going, you just need to strengthen your fundamentals some. I can't seem to figure out how to color something to save my fuckin life.
>>2284795
Not that anon but I think old school tattoo uses pillow shade and gradient as a style.
I do agree that it does look flat but that's how a lot of tattoos look
