>Leyendecker makes as much money and fame as Picasso made
Leyendecker was a prick. Rockwell was twice the man he was and twice the artist, and popular culture acknowledges that.
>Frazettas art in a museum
>Ruin Jia and Jamie Jones are rockstars today
Concept art should be in museums apparently now. They should print out Jamie Jones work on some nice paper, frame it, and hang it next to van Gogh's self portraits. Frazetta's woman fondling her own tits while she jacks off on top of a lion should be next to Guernica.

You seem to think that modern art is dissuading people from making artwork. Like you and your work are being excluded from the conversation. Why don't you just make good art and stop trying to live vicariously through the success of other people?

who gives a shit? he can paint

It's still art, haven't you taken the compulsory art appreciation course?

This, tbqh.
>>
>>2283192
avant garde is whatever is cutting edge at the time. many of the old masters were avant garde for their time.

frazetta, disney, etc. aren't "fine art", they're mostly illustration, and occupy a completely different place in the art world than museum/gallery work. it doesn't make them lesser in any way.
>>
>>2283206
leyendecker wasnt picasso. not even close.

you guys gotta stop thinking illustration is fine arts. they are two different things.
>>
ITT: newfags who think 'Leyendecker' was one guy.

There were two brothers - J.C. and F.X.

People who really know Illustration prefer Francis Xavier over Joseph Christian - cleaner line, less static figures...
>>
>>2283332
Written by someone who never took Art History classes. In America especially, Illustration was the art accessible to the masses - Wyeth, Pyle, Parrish, TH Benton, Frederic Remington, T Nast, Rockwell... and even outside the US, Erte, Mucha... the list goes on and on...
>>
>>2283388
Written by someone who's never made anything other than aspiring commercial illustration. Make one painting that isn't meant to illustrate some fantasy world meant to be spun out into movies tshirts and action figures and you'll see how pointless commercial illustration is. it's a job. it's advertisement for products. it's not important.
>>
>>2283393
It's a job. Try having one sometime. I've done commercial illustration, I've done editorial Illustration, and I had a GAG card for a while. I've also done gallery shows. Your attitude towards art is fucking cancer. Come back in a couple decades, we'll talk about what kept the lights on in your basement - commercial 'shit', or the brony porn commissions you think will make your rich...
>>
>>2283164
>implying your deviantart-tier drawing or sculptures are art.

They are arts-and-crafts at best.
>>
>>2283409
Talk to me when you stop masturbating you fucking retard. acting like you know shit about anything. thinking your a fucking "adult" cause you have a job. go to hell if you want it so bad.
>>
>>2283412
that wasn't implied at all. in fact there were no implications. what I said is what I said- ALL art made today is considered "contemporary" by definition, regardless of its style or how appealing you personally find it.
>>
>>2283117
That fucking hulk drawing in the background.
>>
>>2283414
not the one you are speaking with, but go and eat shit
>>
>>2283414
dude, you're such a baby Im cringing really hard at this
>>
>>2283474
exactly, art is subjective.

I asked a friend of a friend the other day what she thought about contemporary art. She went to liberal art college, but she's terrible at it. She got so mad and she shouted me that contemporary art is terrible and it shouldn't be called "art". Now, all right I can understand where it comes from but I asked myself (my work could be called "contemporary") how i consider her basic anime paintings and muscular men-with-no-faces drawings... I am not a fan of it, but I 'm far from being mad about it!

So why is it all these people seem to think there is only one true art. I don't like her art but I won't start to bash it, it's her thing. I never ever hear a "contemporary artist" saying the same about these guys.It seems to go one way only: jealous people calling us out.
>>
>>2283724
Don't assume that everyone who yells at something is jealous. I'd imagine people get mad/annoyed at contemporary art because some of it requires a lot less technical skill. Thus, the effort put into it seems disproportionate to the amount of attention given to it. And let's face it, there's quite a bit of overly pretentious trash out there. On the other hand, you can't really shit on more traditional artists because of the rich history behind them.

Also wtf are you talking about? There's a lot of people calling out shitty muh style artists. Just look at this board. And don't delude yourself into thinking you're the only group that gets the "not actually art"-insult thrown their way.
>>
>>2283759
I mostly talk from my experience, irl ...not this board

same artist as the balloon dog in the foreground, Jeff Koons
>>
I feel like a lot of these artists" are actually technically proficient when they try, they just get so jaded that it just becomes more fun for them to troll the shit out of nerds, and they like the attention they get.

Idk about that one in particular, it's just that if you don't like it, you end up giving it attention anyway, hence pop art. I mean, you could just ignore it...
>>
>>2283185
That's a cute pupper

>be Jeff Koons

I saw a koons show in the gagosian gallery two years back, walked by a balloon blow up hulk, like a shitty water toy looking thing and thought the nerve of this cunt. Then later realized it was painted, mirror polish metal like the balloon animals.

On a technical level Jeff koons art is 100 percent flawless. He's bankrupted high level fabricators and foundries.

>subjective
the word is 'relative'

Subjective is a sly meme, implying the other end of the argument is "objective". Hence, some kind of scientific provable law. Art and art history are more multifaceted than a nice objectively boxy box box.

For example: Interpersonal relationships are similarly both complex and relative, but objectively minded anon can not have one because he can not into why the guaranteed pick up line dvd he paid money for doesn't work. The disclaimer however says it's not his fault but rather hers, thus perpetual virginity.
>>
>>2283117

I like the balloon dog. It's a fun sculpture. If it's art or just craft, well I don't care to be honest.

It helps to think of Koons as drawing on the 'Readymade' ideas of Duchamp. A lot of his work is, in part, about rethinking the aesthetics of common items we assign trivial or no artistic merit to, like the common Balloon dog. Seen from that mindset, Koons offers some really interesting art. Sure, as a central theme, it can wear on you, but if you're the artist and really want deeper cultural penetration of your ideas, you do it many times, so that more and more of the audience gets it.
