My vote goes for pic related, Zedig, he's just done so much stuff this year and has been developing a new aesthethic never before seen, he totally deserves it.
Peleng on the other hand has not done shit this year, and Mike Azevedo was AOTY last year but this year he was very meh.

HOW THE FUCK you can get that many values in a drawing and making it read that good? I mean, you see that the contrast and values choices in some parts are not realistically accurate with the lightning, yet it reads so good. Also, to see him working is asking to feel bad about yourself skillwise, he works on tiny tiny bits and in the end it all looks good together.
Actually, Zedig have a really interesting value control on his renderings too and paints really slow, it's interesting to see his process because his brushstrokes makes it seems he works really fast.

I think the ruan jia thing is because even though he changes hue a lot it's always a desaturated as fuck color, so even if he changes the color it's all just different gray colors

I think Mullins (pbuh) once said on Sijun or somewhere that a lot of what style is is just how you hide your weaknesses.
Zedig's work is nice, but I think a lot of his cool style is really just a clever disguise for how weak his actual drawing skills are. Imo, he spends too much time on pretty colors and brush effects and not enough on muh loomis, and it shows.

He's not an artists' artist. He appeals to the general public a lot, hence his fame in Korea and his propensity for doing demos. His artwork itself is definitely good, but he is more renowned for his process (no ref, no underdrawing, even on complex images). It's his process and insane visual memory that blows people's minds, not his art so much. There are many other artists that I think have a stronger or more impacting final artwork than KJG, but I can respect the skill he has for sure. Mullins called him "the Korean Octopus"...KJG basically does impressive parlour tricks but his artwork (most of it at least, perhaps not all) lacks a lot of substance to it. If he did the same artwork with standard processes of doing thumbnails, gathering reference, doing an underdrawing, then inking it, he would have less than 1/10 the fame he has now. His finished artwork is largely just a dick swinging contest too, with him being like "check it, I can draw a tiger, a monkey, ten people, a building, a car, an engine, people having sex, an elephant, and an airplane!".

A well-known technique most digital artists use is increasing the image size you are working on for fine detail, then resizing smaller again. Work resolution is in the 4k range, but don't be surprised if that gets blown up 3x for fine detailing then resized back down to desktop resolution(4k and less) when finished.

It could be that or maybe...it's the other way around and he doesn't draw from his imagination at all. Every time he draws something he draws it as if it was right in front of him in the real world instead of from his mind's eye, his internal world. This could be the most natural thing to him.
Keep in mind he's not a squeamish guy. He's said before that his favorite thing to draw is corpses. He's the type of person that would would lean in to look at a corpse more carefully instead of retreating into some artsy dream world.
