What do d/ic/ks think abot Bob Ross?
The problem I have with his work and what he teaches is that it's all some sort of cheap "trick" to make something that looks decent, but you won't go very far with this alone.
Let me explain. If you pay attention to his work, he doesn't seem to have any understanding of perspective or volumes. All he does is place flat plains one in front of the other, rather than fully build a scene in volume and perspective. The mountains never connect to the middleground and so on. If you look at his pieces where there is no background, he doesn't even know how to build a landscape that goes to the horizon. Another problem is that he has no understanding of values.
On the other hand, he does master the paintbrush in the sense that he can make trees within a short amount of time. But he lacks some fundamentals and it shows.
>>2269824
I think he sucks but he's cool for being a chill funny dude. A meme sort of. As a painter though he sucks major balls.
>>2269844
Art is not rocket science. Even Vilppu said that you don't need perfect knowledge of perspective and anatomy.
>>2269850
There's a difference between not having perfect knowledge of something and not even knowing it exists.
>>2269850
I love how this post says absolutely nothing at all of value.
>>2269824
I think he is decent at what he does. Also, he's not trying to teach people interested in becoming professional painters, hes teaching who is seeking it as a hobby. The way he teaches makes it cool to watch.
One guy I like to let the audio play while I'm painting uses the same method and copy the way Bob Ross teaches, but he is actually way better and makes some cool environment from time to time. I like to play it because of the soothing voice and the sound of brushes hitting the canvas.

>>2269855
this guy is legit better than Ross t b h
>>2269844
When you only get 20 something minutes to work with, I think that's a decent enough excuse.
I think he's great because he got people who thought they would never be able to paint to start painting. He may not be the best, but just that fact alone makes him great in my book.
Bob Ross = Bill Nye
No one claims they're amazing, but they do the job of getting people interested and making it appealing to people who otherwise would have never cared.
Bob was a great guy, whether or not he was a great artist is irrelevant.
>>2269844
>All he does is place flat plains one in front of the other, rather than fully build a scene in volume and perspective.
Show us how that's done
>>2269844
it seems you are not happy, be carefull of little incident that maybe happened :->
Did anyone paint using his technique before him?
>>2269915
Wet canvas is old technique
>>2269893
well but bill nye is twenty times the scientist that bob ross is the painter, lol. i agree that they do a great job in terms of creating excitement for their discipline etc.
I guess he is to us what Scooby is to /fit/.
>>2269900
Take a look at how Bierstadt integrates his mountains in the actual painting for example. You can guess where they connect to the middleground and you get a sense of how each plain connects to the other. Bob Ross just paints a mountain that doesn't fit the landscape at all, just covers the fact that it doesn't fit with a bit of mist and he's done.
>>2269855
The way he puts so much breath into his voice makes me feels uneasy.
>>2269948
>Bierstadt
Holy shit anon, i never knew of this paint until now, fucking amazing paintings.
Thank you.
>>2269855
Dear god, it is painful how this man just straight up imitates Ross' mannerisms.
>>2270083
You're welcome. This one also illustrates exactly what I was saying.
>>2269903
I'm waiting on the good times now.
PJSalt article below, what do you think of it? Can we have some comments under that?

>>2269844
>>2269948
This is true. I mean it's clear he has some understanding of perspective, but he does clearly fudge the relation between fore and background most of the time.
That said, it's pretty obvious that the show is not meant to teach drawing or draughtsmanship - it's about painting. In other words, it's more about the medium than the content. And in that respect, I think the show is decent. Mixing colors, wet-on-wet technique, using different brushes for different textures, some considerations of contrast, warm/cool color, atmospheric perspective - you can definitely learn some of this stuff from the show. Unfortunately it does feel really gimmicky because he's always painting the same thing.
>>2270378
i think that the fact that he made people realise some of the stuff painters make are really super easy to make is what is important about the show, it makes you feel like "yeah i can fucking do that". and thats what really matters
>>2269855
Just made a thread about this then found this post. Do you know where I could torrent his instructional DVDs?

I watched a few episodes on Twitch. The chat just spams sad emotes when he says something sort of depressing and jokingly floods RUINED whenever he starts painting a new element on the canvas. It was pretty nice seeing a bunch of new age kids unironically enjoying Bob Ross.
>>2271000
Nop. I just watch his channel in youtube. I don't know how different his DVDs are from his youtube videos, would be interested if you find anything.
>>2271057
I literally have no money until tomorrow. Thinking of biting the bullet and just buying one of them.
>>2271064
I was looking on amazon and I found his tv series being sold by the season, $60 for 13 episodes and there are over 20 seasons. Did he also make special dvd episodes that weren't on tv?
>>2271068
What? You sure it's not a tv show called Kevin hill?
>>2271064
If he goes on about color choices, mood and brushwork might be worth one video. But I don't see any reason to buy more lessons because the concept behind that technique is simple, you just need experience doing it.
I'm curious too if you can actually transfer that kinda of technique to digital as I think some of his backgrounds would look really good with fantasy illustration.
>>2271072
Oh lol I was talking about bob ross. My mistake.
>paints a standard plant
"HAHAHA WEED BLAZE IT 420 XD"
>currently painting a sunset, sky sort of looks like a blob with two larger blobs on the top of each side, redder color below it
"WHOA RARE PEPE XD GUYS ITS PEPE THE FROG"
holy shit this chat I have to turn it off

There are hundreds of episodes on the youtubes

I think he made a few instruction vids that focused more on teaching stuff than being fast and easy edutainment and they are hours longs.

this guy is literally imitating bob ross in the way he speaks, not only in the tone, but the words too.
you can see it's completely see that it's all fake when he spoke that last line, not blinking as if he was concentrating to just talk.

I know he is imitating, that's pretty obvious. It's well know that you evoke a good feeling using that kinda of soothing voice.
I don't think he is concentrating to just talk because he literally did hundreds of those videos and probably hundred of hours in his DVDs.

He's a chill dude, but after watching like 5-10 episodes you do really start to notice that he's basically just painting the same picture over and over again. He shows fancy and neat tricks to do with the brush that give quick, visually appealing results, but he never breaks down any of the fundamentals of how volumes, perspective or his color-choices work.
Obviously the intent of his show is not really to properly teach art. The intent is to show people who might've never picked up a paintbrush that they can enjoy doing so, and he's great at that. Or maybe just to give stoners something to watch for an hour or two.
>>2274282
>the fundamentals of how volumes, perspective or his color-choices work
That's because he teaches that it's just an illusion.
His great skill was to demystify visual art, show you exactly how little was necessary to create something beautiful, that the process didn't have to be agonizing, and that art is never fully intentional, it's controlled chaos, and you have to be willing to let go. He showed you how creating art can set you free.
His method was limited because he was self-admittedly a lazy painter, but over the years he perfected his easy, simple painting style. His fantastically idyllic landscapes might bore you but doesn't mean they're bad. Some of them are really, very inspired. That said he produced plenty of mediocre stuff, but he wasn't afraid of showing you that too.
There is no more effective gateway drug to art than Bob Ross, don't diss him just because many end up stuck as junkies. They never had the will to advance to begin with.
>>2274366
Beautiful, anon. I wouldn't have explained it better myself

yep. also the paintings that he does without time constraints really are lovely. not to be sneezed at. i wish he was still here.

Those are all inside jokes if u can't understand them just turn off chat and enjoy the stream, you are there to watch the stream if you can't, just go watch the brainwashing tv.

he did that within 30 minutes like bob ross did?
wow!
>oh wait lmao
>>2269855
the extent he goes to imitate Ross makes this video unwatchable for me.
>>2275754
I think it's the combination. He expresses his philosophy through his technique.

Get a grip /ic/ he was a one trick pony, it was sweet but a sweet form of toxicity. Get back to work on your fundamentals, faggots.
Thank you Robert Norman "Bob" Ross for teaching me, a regular guy who knows NOTHING about painting, about the joy of painting. Rest in peace, we love and miss you.
God Bless my friend.

>>2276619
Does his sons even still plaint? My guess is they are going to start a new season of the show for at least a month. Why else would Twitch allow subscriptions to the channel, they will probably give someone new other this next month at least. If Steven came to paint on twitch he'd probably made good money for awhile.

If only Bob had seen what we are capable of with digital. I wonder what he'd say.

>>2269927
What science has Bill Nye ever done? Has he published any papers? IIRC, he just has an engineering degree.
He may be a skilled science communicator, but he's below pleb-tier as far as actual science accomplishment is concerned, to my knowledge.
>>2276802
bull fucking shit
First time with you d/ic/ks. I started painting three days ago because of Bob. Bought acrylics though because I'm a twat and didn't know the difference. Struggled like fuck for two days on a ridiculously big canvas. And I painted two smaller pics after it.
No matter what you think of him, I managed to produce something I'm really happy with and I painted it solely from listening to Bob. My mum didn't even hang my paintings from school on the fridge. I fucking enjoyed myself and I will try to do it regularly. Only next time I buy supplies, I'll get oils like I should have in the first place.
>>2275570
not him, but bill nye has done some minor things for nasa and wind science.
I wouldn't say he's "twenty times the scientist as bob is the painter" but he did use to do a few science things here and there outside his tv show.
>>2269824
if we talk about his show "Joy of Painting" as skillfull artist he was bad
but it was never about drawing awesome pictures like the Mona Lisa or this >>2270083
it was all about the joy/fun that you can have with painting and to show you some basic tricks to start so that you get "good" pictures
where you went from there is a totally different story, like if you are happy with this or maybe if you want to realy learn "Art" was up to you
>>2277192
That's actually pretty cool anon
>>2276820
Because it was used as a comparison to Bob
