started a couple years ago
I'm a computer engineer trying to set up a company as soon as I'm confident about it, having a regular job in the meantime
art for me is an hobby, the goal is to create something beautiful. my dream is to set up an art exhibition someday (before you laugh, it's pretty easy to do that here in Italy, you just rent a place and that's it. Obviously if the art sucks balls you're just wasting your money and people's time, so you need to have something good on your hands)

started when i was old enough to hold a crayon, and just never outgrew it like most of the other kids did
i write but i guess that also counts as art (albeit not visual)
my goal is to be able to financially sustain myself with my artwork or knowledge of art that i've acquired of the years, in and outside of college, whatever that means
>>

I've doodled during class from time to time since gradeschool, but I only really started drawing more regularly 1 1/2 years ago. In the beginning I was still more of a child. I guess I was hoping to design characters and creatures for videogames or movies.

However, since then I've been reading a lot of classic literature and I'm trying to get into more recent western philosophy. I also posted on 4chan a lot.

Now that I have realized how much potential there is in storytelling, I've come to the conclusion that the videogame- and movieindustry just doesn't create much that I would want to work on, especially not in a position that gives me virtually no creative control. My current goal is to be good enough at art and life in general to sustain myself through work that is actually creative and allows me to be independant.

When it was time to decide which school to go to. I decided on a shitty art school that cost a fortune. Seemed like the easiest choice. I think I was 19 at the time. I didn't take it seriously until I was 21 though.

I read books and waste time on the internet. I also exercise 3 times a week in hopes of it helping with the tendonitis.

My goal is to have paid off my 83k student loan by the time I'm 50. Live in a small house out by the countryside. Do art to pay the bills but also to keep improving and have fun.

I used to have dreams of travelling the world while working freelance.

>When and why did you start drawing?
Started young. I got influenced by stick figure animation, because the ones on newgrounds impressed me.
I ended up not drawing for a while because it got "violent and sodimised"
Then only a few years back in 2011, I started drawing pone. Why?
It felt good to be part of a community that didnt isolate you and decimate your ideas, but I was still in highschool.
I stopped drawing them in 2013, but due to recent events, I may have to start doing it again but this time for paying for things.

Whew

My family tells me that I've been drawing/ painting since I was little. I would watch my aunt paint, and I think those little fanart displays on original toonami had a part. But I only started for reals trying like last year..
Mostly nothing.. I have a small circle of good friends. I take care of a dog and try and stay healthy. Other hobbies I have would be warhammer, games, movies and music. (I may be a lazy shit but it wasn't always like this, I used to work a lot. Three part time jobs and three seasonal gigs. It kept me busy mostly, but I got sick and my life kind of went up in smoke.. But hey, now I have all day every day to draw so I got that going for me I guess. I'm gonna be fine.)

I've never really had a goal. I've had delusions of being an illustrator.. Thought about doing art for albums and book covers, thought about doing comics.
I've just sort of been putzing about without direction.. Im thinking of making a portfolio in the future and seeing what comes of it.. Like present it somehow get feedback. I have a lot of people now saying i should go to art school but i don't think it's right for me. At least not now.

I've been drawing since i was about 10 or so, wasn't very good back then of course, but i mostly just drew comics for fun. I've been seriously drawing (actually learning anatomy and such) for about 3 years now.

I began around about when Adam Adamowicz died, I found his work and really got inspired but it.

Play games, listen to music. I'm not very sociable, though I wish I was, my close friends a just as big shut ins as I am.

I've know since I was very little that I wanted to make fictional worlds, I played imagination games with friends and had a fondness for fantasy and scifi.
I decided I wanted to work in games because I could feel proud knowing that something I designed made someone happy.

Don't worry too much, it doesn't really matter.

From my experience a lot of the people who claim to have been drawing since ever are quite stuck in their past of always being the best in class and can't admit sucking at something.

When and why did you start drawing?

<1year ago, primarily for personal enrichment with a tiny hope that I might be able to do art+programming for some crappy hobby games.

What do you do besides art?

Software development is my thing, 12-13years of experience, though it's a bit generous to count time before I was 16-17 as worthwhile experience. Aside from that I love music and the outdoors, robotics, 3d printing, and RC stuff.

What is your goal?

As above I'd like to be able to create my own art for some game projects, to work on in my free time and keep me sane. Realistically though, I don't know if I'll ever produce anything I'm willing to let see the light of day.

I'm 18.

I started like 5 months ago. So far I still suck. Feel like I made no progress...at all.

Besides art? I read a lot of comics. Mainly Japanese ones, but I'm not biased. I read all kinds of comics, American, European, I just happen to like the pacing of Japanese comics better.

My goal is to produce comics, and not have a headache everytime I try to fucking make a new story. It's fucking torture man, I stay up late and then end up scraping the story. Figure out a story and than lose interest, either because I realize it sucks or because I fucked up something when making it. Rinse & repeat. So far I have not finished a single complete work.
>>

make a short story that way you don't feel like you committed a lot to it even it if fails, stick to it and post so you can get feedback rather than trying to do one unrealistic long comics while having 0 exp on making one.

>get rich or die trying. But for real I think digital art is an interesting way of making money.Art has been dying for the last hundred years and painters and other graphic artists aren't even remotely respected as they were a few centuries ago.But the 21st century brought art back into the mainstream.Video games , websites , programs , everything needs a UI , logo , promotional pictures , etc. It's very profitable to be a graphic designer in Eastern Europe , since in America and probably Western Europe the pay of a graphic designer is pretty average. But compare that salary to doctor's salaries in EE and it's even bigger than that. The trick is that you can be employed from anywhere in the world and you'll get the same pay as if you were like i dunno in America even though you're in the Balkans...

I've always wanted to work at some VFX studio working as Visual development or Character design, or even storyboarding. But, I'd take an illustration job as well. It's really all up in the air at the moment.

A quick question:
Does anyone know if you get paid a constant salary while working at a studio? Or is it, like, "You'll get paid when we get a gig," sort of thing?
Is it more worth it to do commissions and sell personal works?

I'm 4 months sober from all videogames. So MMOs were what did me in. In all truth I'm not addicted to videogames, I honestly believe I can waste a couple days playing zelda, final fantasy or ace attorney just fine, then get back to work.

I'm addicted to the social aspect in online videogames. I loved people, but they didn't love me back. The final straw was realizing how cancerous the attitudes in these games became. They made them easier, people didn't hang out as much. They talked so much shit about each other. Always gloating and 1upping each other. I'm still nostalgic about the first couple years in the games, when nobody knew shit. That is NEVER coming back. I'm starting to get old because I realized this.

tl;dr I sold it all, tossed it, deleted my accounts. And thanks to a couple great tips online, I'm more productive in art than I've ever been. Losing friends, having a shit job, living with my parents, annoying them, my sister moving on in life, motivates me to work more and get the fuck out of my position.

>When and why did you start drawing?
I've always drawn here and there since I was a kid, but only got truly serious and disciplined about getting gud this year. I wanted to get serious for a while, but I guess I wasn't really aware of how much I would have to give up in order to get where I wanted to be.

>What do you do besides art?
I'm NEETing till I go back to school this Fall, so I weight train, meditate, read, and watch/listen to vidya livestreams. Hoping to get good enough to take porn commissions and make some money before school though.

>What is your goal?
I'd like to be a great artist and put out tons of quality work - mostly digital and various traditional mediums, and I want to become proficient with 3d / animation too - before I die. Doesn't matter what it's for, could be entertainment industry shit or personal commissions or just my own stuff. If I could inspire some of my would-be audience to try their hand at creating art and to work hard at getting better, that would be pretty nice as well. It'd be great to keep making porn (for me moreso than getting paid) even if I somehow make it big as a pro, and if it were possible to do without negative consequences, I wouldn't mind having all my work united under one name, whether it's professional work or porn or otherwise. It'd also be great to live in Hawaii like Mullins, though I'd want a cozy little house with a home gym and studio all for myself rather than a mansion.

In my endgame as an artist, I want to do as I wish.

I'm 27, started drawing when I was 24 I think. I dont know why I started, I was bored and just started doodling out of nowhere. It was a hobby for awhile, just did it for fun, didnt care about getting better, I received much praise for being 'talented' from my friends and family, so I thought I was a natural until I started networking on art sites and very quickly learned how terrible I am haha.

My family began pressuring me to do something with it even though I had no mileage and didnt even know what perspective drawing was at the time. It really sucked the fun out of it for awhile (constantly lectured for not having a career) and now I work retail which Ive done for many years. I want to get my art to a level where I can make decent money with it, but I dont know how possible that is. I might have started too late and Ive spent the majority of my time trying to get my figures/faces to look good, I havent even started backgrounds yet. My characters still blow ass though so Ive had it in my mind that I should keep working on those before I start getting into backgrounds. Mind you, I still study various subjects even though most of what I draw is characters, Ive put a great deal of time into perspective as well as anatomy. Ive been on ic for a few years so Ive studied a lot of the books that are constantly mentioned, and the next book I plan on going through is Force.

When you get more experience you learn quite fast to deal with critique. In most cases you yourself are the one who knows what shit is wrong and how to fix it. No matter if it comes your 45 year old art director or a 14 year old kid from /ic/.

There's more young artists ignoring valuable feedback than older ones being affected by bad feedback.

I've always drawn , started making comics seriously when I was about 8

Right now I work fried chicken fast food hell 32 hours a week along with going to school part time for graphic design

I've realized the being talked into graphic design was stupid and I want to pursue my dream of illustration so im looking into going to art school
Long term goal is to become a story board artist/concept artist/illustrator

Also to work on my damn comic

>I've realized the being talked into graphic design was stupid

Its either too simple or too hard for Graphic Design. All you have to know is how to properly but quickly molest photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
Use some basic fucking colors based on the companies design, or make a stupid fucking collage of other peoples work.
>>
>>1994188
I started coming here when I was 14, didn't critique anyone till I knew what I was talking about though.
>>

This. It's easy to see useful critique from the stuff you get. Most of the time it's something you would have seen yourself after a while but just needed a fresh eye on anyways

>When and why did you start drawing?
since when i learn how can use a pencil with my hands, i dont know why exactly, it was fun but i was never serious about it until this winter.

>What do you do besides art?
engineering stuff, vidya, anime until i startin art school development program 10 days ago. Now i really dont have time for anything but draw.

>What is your goal?
become concept or storyboard artist and at least make a 2d, handmade animated stuff.
>>

When and why did you start drawing?
I always did random sketches and shit in class growing up. Started doing it somewhat serious this last November.

What do you do besides art?
I'm a flight medic. I'm pre-med in school. I watch Netflix. I do karaoke sometimes.

What is your goal?
I want to be a doctor. I love medicine. If I don't make it in to med school (I already scored a 38 on my MCAT and just have to finish my BS, so that probably won't happen) I will work as a paramedic and make comics.

Art-wise I want to draw comics. Webcomics is probably more likely while I am working and going to school, but it would be cool to draw for DC, Marvel, or Dark Horse.

>>

Someone should graph out all the responses (seen it done in previous poll threads) so we can see the general patterns of the community.

>How old are you?
21

>When and why did you start drawing?
Started because I like to draw. Been doing digital art for a bit over 5 years now, and did a bit of traditional stuff before that. So maybe around 6 or so years of taking art seriously, though some depressions and other life things have gotten in the way at various points meaning I don't do art for months at a time.

>What do you do besides art?
Nothing productive.

>What is your goal?
Long term: Become the best I can be in art--hopefully that means reaching and surpassing my heros in art.

Short term: clear up mental issues and get back into freelancing.

2010, it was cool really "seeing" for the first time, felt like I was on drugs looking at all the same shit. The feeling went away (I miss it so much), but sometimes I notice shapes in peoples faces and just get lost in how weird they look. I guess now I draw for the pleasure of seeing my completed works (which are mostly just gestures nowadays).

Food Scientist.

Ultimately, live off of some kind of IP (I don't care if it's static art, film, stories, comics, etc), but I haven't made much progress in that endeavor. Actually, that really makes that the means to an end and the end goal is to be a lazy fuck and do literally nothing (or euphemised, have the time and money for fun things).

If you mean working at a studio as in Rockstar or Ubisoft or whatever then yeah, you get paid a salary. It will increase as you gain experience, take on more of the workload, have a higher position within your group, etc.

I'm not sure when it comes to the ones more like a studio share, where it's essentially a group of artists all doing freelance under the same banner, that would depend on the size of said studio. I imagine Six More Vodka and such could pay salary, but like I say really not sure.

If you want to make more, go it solo, but then you'll have the stress and extra work of sorting out all your own marketing/scheduling/everything. It's more important whether you'd like to work at a safer company job in a group, or go it solo and take risks.

I really like to hang out with friends, good freinds, that's so important to me.

>my goal?
get a job I enjoy related to biology (most likley mcdonals cuz im not going to an ivy leauge) and do art in my spare time. I use alot of the stuff i learn in my major and attribute it to my art, it gives it more depth. but thats more of my life goal, art specific is more so to effectively communicate my ideas (creatures, monsters, landscapes, potray emotions) as best I can via technical ability. thats what is so gripping about art, the fact that you it's a visual recording of your imagination and creativity, that's why I never saw the appeal in copying celebbrity portaits and stuff like that, its lacking the indivualism, art is a visual jounral. I like when people like my art and think its cool but I really enjpy when they can relate to it and get FEELS. that's when I know I did something right.
I also like to register monsters/creaturess that I come up with, ill do a whole page dedicated to that one particular thing and write about its imagined attributes, habbitat, feeding sources, etc etc i find that stuff really fun.

idk I really like to see the shit people come up with via their imagination, working on creativity carries over into alot of other aspects i find.

anyways enough blabbering. best of luck with all my (apparently) peers and older guys.
