I guess we all can pretty much agree that Michelangelo is by far the greatest artist who has ever lived, right?

When nature mixes some degree of inner talent, great ambition, neurotic egocentrism, enormous pride, great capacity for work, obsession, physical strength and resistance, all in the same person, the results are truly wonderful.

>Michelangelo is by far the greatest artist
I don't think it's possible to make that claim about ANY artist. He is one of the best, but there is no single best artist, let alone one that is far ahead of others.

Plus tastes change. What you say is the best may not be agreed by people in the future. Hell, for hundreds of years Raphael was considered the greatest Renaissance artist and only in the past 150 years or so did Michelangelo replace him. I mean personally I like his work more than Raphael or Da Vinci, but I won't make a statement of him being the best. Plus when you compare him to more recent artists it really becomes an apples to oranges type thing because their goals and aesthetics are so different, and you can't say one is better than another unless you set out strict criteria that will favour a particular time period.

>Hell, for hundreds of years Raphael was considered the greatest Renaissance artist and only in the past 150 years or so did Michelangelo replace him.

Really? wow...he is not that impressive: only a few of his paintings are really great.
>>
>>2296141
If I remember correctly he was admired for his composition, draftsmanship, and the emotion he put in his figures and images. But yeah his influence was massive, that's why the Pre-Raphaelites came about--they felt people were taking too much from Raphael and rejected that as an aesthetic and standard.

This, it's like saying Boichi is the best Mangaka
>>
>>2296163

OP here. Yeah, that is something I really regret about him: he was not interested in the female form, a great pity, because the young and healthy female body is the most beautiful and perfect thing in the whole Universe.

But if he wanted to sculpt women he would be capable of doing wonders.
>>
>>2296133

If were talking Italian Renaissance Raphael was probably better. Of all time, that's an impossible and ridiculous statement. Once your reach a certain level I think most of the greats are basically equal.

Yea, OK faggot. The female form is simple and dull. The male body is superior in every way. not even gay.
>>
>>2296186

I know is pure biology man, just the electrochemical parliament and hormonal voices of my neurons, but damn, I feel some sort of warm embrace on the loins, a tender caress on the entrails when I see pictures of beautiful nude women. I just love them. I can’t wait to come back home from work and make love with my girlfriend now.

He couldn't paint/sculpt women for shit and he was a much better sculptor than he was a painter.

There is no single greatest artists, there are too many era, styles, and media to crown a single king.
>>
>>2296141
He's not that impressive technically upon first viewing, but that's exactly part of what makes him great. His paintings aren't calculated to make the viewer impressed by technique or spectacles. It's difficult to really gauge how good Raphael is exactly because this. Part of the theory of the time, which he exemplified, is the hiding of art and to make whatever is done seem effortless. This is different of course to the show of effortless bravura that we mostly come to think of now when the concept of effortlessness is in question. In Raphael's art is a general air of effortlessness without even trying to seem effortless.
