Howdy, /ic/! My art group and I have been doing this pastime for a bit and I wanted to share.
The premise of the activity is sharing abstract images with your friends and trying to make some sort of a readable composition from them within a set time frame.
Firstly you and a few friends get together on skype/hangout or whatever your preferred chat program is. We prefer hangout as it's easy to share screens and give each other advice while talking about specific areas of a piece. For the second step, each of you should spend the next five or so minutes chopping...

Almost didn't notice the pepe
Whenever im starting with a new painting im excited and enthousiastic for the first few sessions, and time seems to fly.
But then i suddenly get so depressed and dissapointed i dont want to continue anymore and i feel hopeless.
why is this? How do people keep working on the same painting for a long time with the same initial enthousiasm?
force of habit. if it's not a habit you're not an artist.

I work on several paintings at once and alternate between them so they feel fresh each time I return to them rather than feel like something I am bored of working on.
Alternatively you can try to get into more of a zen mode where you don't think about how long it is taking or anything and you just focus entirely on the process and enjoying it. Or do the opposite and put on a podcast while you mindlessly render it to completion.
I take it you rarely finish anything?
You paint until you hit a road block, then think "if only my perspective was better; I should work on that instead" or "if only my anatomy was better; I should work on that instead". And you practice these things but when it's time to work on another piece you hit a roadblock again, not realizing that what you're refusing to practice is how to finish a piece.
I'm looking to change careers (because my current one is driving me to alcoholism), and I struck upon tattoo artist. I've looked at the requirements for the license, what it takes to get an apprenticeship, and all that good stuff. One little problem though. I can't draw. I can't freehand a straight fucking line, much less a skull with a dagger through it and a snake coming out of the sockets.
I've looked at the sticky, and of course getting good at just about any kind of drawing will be helpful. But is there certain techniques, styles, and subject matter I should focus on while I go through the basics? For instance, on the upside-down exercise, instead of trying to emulate Picasso's Igor Stravinsky, I did one of Sailor Jerry's hula girls (my sense of proportion is fucking shit. She came out an Amazon).
What pieces, and how many, should I include in a portfolio when looking to apprentice with someone?
And most helpful of all, how do I forget this crazy bullshit and just stick it out in my stable government job without putting my gun in my mouth?

theraphy. focus on making small projects, flashes, with classic tattoo symbols or stuff that you lke. Draw and you'll see. I think steady line is very important.
>>2290663
>I think steady line is very important.
To this end, instead of doing the usual graphite and colored pencils, should I work with pens?
>>2290689
You would be best with doing your research on google as I am not a pro, or just ask some artists. As of sketching and colouring I think you can use anything you like. Mate uses watercolours lately (tubes), there is lots of artists who use markers like copics. But my mate mostly did inking with fineliners or a dip pen (tattoo machine works in a way like dip pen, cause you need to dip it in ink). Plus when doing outline you do it with a steady line, and that's easily to get by some fineliner. Just have fun with...

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.
Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued...

where do you guys got motivation to improve your skills ??
Fear of failure.
>>2294084
Rule of thumb: if you have to actively look for it, you'll never be motivated.
Motivation is not something you learn or something you make a habit of. You either have it or not.
It's the thing people mistakenly call "talent".

It's impressive how much bullshit one person can write in just 3 lines.
I'm looking for series of drawings or paintings. Like Goya's Disasters of War (pic related) and his other series.
Anything really. I'll post a few of these
I think this gallery might be the one for you!

Is it common for artists to lie about their age?
I'm 38 but i always go around telling people i'm 19.
how about you guys?

Enjoy the ban
I'm considering picking up Jim Gurney's painting handbooks.
What's /ic/'s opinion of them?
How well do they help with shit like composition, palette creation, figure lighting, etc.?
color and light is fucking excellent, imaginative realism is alright if you were interested in understanding gurneys particular processes and habits more but it has little instructional value (or at least i didnt feel like i got a whole lot out of it)
>>2293479
color and light is an absolute necessity in my opinion
imaginative realism has some great points to it but literally 75% of the book is "make maquettes to paint better" so its up to you really if the smaller amount of information is enough to pick it up for
color and light though get that shit

This is a correct response.
Listen man, I drew with the same approacd in highschool. You will come to a point where you might want to throw that ''style'' out the window and actually work on perscective, composition, color, etc.
i'm only saying this because this style is a distraction. It's like masturbating, those shapes are pleasing to draw... but are decieving you from ultimately progressing into an innovative artist.
I'm sure the artists that inspire you,...

Sorry for the rushjob picture but my pressure sensitivities kicked itself and I just wanted this thread out.
But yeah, as it says, I want to try and draw a doujin about Mao and Sapphire fucking (Or a girl/regular Axel being a whore). My only experience with comic making is being a colorist and I'm pretty confident in doing greyscales.
Actual construction and drawing on the other hand...one of my main problems is consistency, I'm gonna try to study their refs and draw them 100 times to get down their design.
Do any experienced comic makers have any tips?

You can't color or draw. Refer to the sticky.
