So I want to get into the animation industry and become a character designer/visual development artist. I want to study at college but I'm not sure what the best route is. Should I take a course in animation, a course in art and design, a course in illustration, a course in graphic design? I feel animation is the most obvious one but will I be wasting my time learning Maya when I should really be developing my drawing an painting skills. However if I'm trying to get into animation my work will need to be of a certain standard and I feel colleges that offer art and...

If you want to be a vis dev artist, study illustration with a course in animation; you'll basically never touch the animation itself. If you want to be a character designer, you should still study illustration, but an animation knowledge will be much more important because you'll need to understand what is a good design for animation. And do NOT learn animation with 3D.
>>2436786
Thanks man. Do you have any recommendations on highly regarded animation courses and illustration courses?
>>2436791
I don't know about illustration as much; I studied animation. I guess CalArts, RISD, SVA, the usual.
How do you enjoy or find motivation to draw? I feel like I'm always having to force myself to draw or I feel bored while doing it.
>>2443491
How do you know that you want to draw then?
>>2443495
I've always want to draw, I just can't seem to enjoy it
>>2443548
1/ what do you draw
2/ what do you want to draw

jeez, does art get any better than this?

Yeah, once you throw out that tight brushwork garbage.
Give me some loose brushwork and impasto. Fuck it, mix some other media into that bitch.
Fuck paint on a TV and play H3 under a portrait of the queen.

just the right amount of loomis, good job anon. you'll make it.
I can't make smooth looking lines to save my life.
Besides Illustrator, is there an art program that can make my pen strokes look smooth? I am using Manga Studio, and have stabilization set as high as it can go... but that doesn't get the job done.
Paint tool sai has a good stabilizer. Looking at your drawing though it looks like you just need more practice. Im assuming you're using a tablet and those can take a long time to get use to. Just keep working at it.
>>2442614
there are ways to make lines smoother besides stabilizer.
1) you could draw bigger and then scale it down for presentation. some line inconsistencies will be "discarded" if they weren't too drastic, cause when you scale down, you lose data.
2) don't connect your line (you make connect them later if you wish). it makes drawing confident strokes much easier, which brings me to
3) draw a sketch first. line quality comes down to confidence and when you're not sure what you're drawing...

In response to suggestion number two; you might be able to see right down the middle of my image where my two lines connect. This is because I drew half, flipped the image, than did the other half.
I am more comfortable drawing down and to the left, it seems, so I try to do this as much as possible. How do you recommend connecting the two lines?
>>2442618
I am going to try paint tool sai as soon as possible. With Manga Studio, there is a brush called the "g-pen", which has more of a smoothing ability than the other default brushes. Is their an equivalent for paint tool sai?
I've been learning how to join and construct round forms for almost a year, but seeing no progress. I feel like I'm overcomplicating every piece of advice I get on how to join shapes together.
Is there an easier way for me to understand how I can draw two simple forms together? Pic related, the roundness and volume of the character is what I'm trying to go for.
almost a year and you still can't FEEL it? damn bro.
>>2441026
fuck off retard
>>2441026
Is this what I'm not doing? Here's another example of what I'm aiming for. It's all those jointed round shapes that I'm trying to go for.
How do you guys deal with artist's block?
I'm fucking dead inside. I can't draw without feeling pissed off and wanting to die, not so much out of frustration, but because my art is as dead as I am. I know I'm a faggot and I downloaded all the loomis shit. Anyone have any good tips? Drawing used to be my life.
I never get art block get on my level
>>2440096
If I'm blocked I just paint something from life.
I find it easier and looser than working from a photo, and I can still end up with a pretty picture to be proud of.
>>2440099
I like this idea a lot...
What ages are you yourself comfortable drawing for commissions?
>>2436524
Just write I'm actually a 10,000 year old dragon in human form. Nothing can go wrong then.
Why would it ever matter?
Ideally, you should be comfortable with drawing anything, especially if your rent and food depend on it. Plus you'll only get better as an artist drawing stuff outside your comfort zone.
Lolis are life though.
What do you watch/listen to while you work?
you shouldn't be "watching" anything
ideally you should be working in silence.
now fuck off back to weddit.

Maybe you're the one who needs to fuck off, buddy.
>>2431794
IM NOT SMART ENOUGH
When picking up art, is it okay to have a set goal in mind aside from just wanting to get good?
Like, I of course want to one day produce something I'm proud of. But I've picked up art again because I would like to someday produce a graphic novel. I'd this the wrong mindset?
>>2442744
I'd be surprised if anyone could really be driven by the goal of "git gud" alone. I don't even know what you're trying to ask. Do you really think someone is going to tell you wanting to write a graphic novel is a bad mindset?
You only need to be certain about the next step you're going to take. Some idea of what's down the road is helpful too, but you're probably overthinking things.
>>2442748
I guess I'm thinking I need to pass a certain skill level before I should attempt what I want to do, to do it justice. I'm also thinking about the adage in writing that writing for money will never be as rewarding as doing it for the love of storytelling (not that I'm doing this for money).
To this end - can anyone recommend good books on graphic novel composition?
hey, that's a neat drawing
I want to create characters (Design them) and sell them.
Got any examples of what could be "sellable" and is not ?
Where can I sell them ?
>>2442324
just make one, palate swap it and call them different names
sell it on FA and DA as an adoptable, it doesn't even have to be good art people will buy it everytime
pic very related
>>2442328
Do you have particular examples ? With a link pls
How much should I sell them ?

Hey /ic/, i've been luriking for a while, and i was wondering.
How do i become Ruan Jia? I know there's no shortcuts, only hard work. My parents gave me 3 years to NEET and i want to become as close as i possibly can in 3 years to Ruan Jia.
In your guys's eyes im a beginner. Could you guys reccomend a training and study regiment? I want to try my hardest and since im a noob i dont know what to study and in what order. i would greatly appreciate it if you guys would help me out.
And lastly, sorry for being a faggot
>>2437511
>Parents gave me 3 years to NEET
You lucky bastard
>I'm a noob
If your a true noob your not going to get to that level in 3 years. I mean that doesn't mean you shouldn't try, but don't expect to get anywhere fast. Improvement in drawing is like watching the grass grow. It takes a while and you wont be able to tell by watching it.
Other than that we've got a nice sticky you should check out. Post in beginner threads...

you can get halfway there in 3 years. but it'll be really hard. i'd spend the entire first year doing absolutely nothing other than drawing from life. like a complete madman. 8 hours per day minimum.
