Consider a situation where you're going into a shop to buy some candies. You don't need the candies, you just want the nice luxurious flavor and you can afford it. The correct answer is to ignore the homeless person and buy your candy. That's healthy selfishness: it's protecting your resources, it's helping that homeless person grow stronger by not giving him a free ride, and it's not investing in an action that has zero or negative positive return.

What I'm talking about, however, is more about merit, while the other considerations are still present but secondary.
The primary consideration is: who deserves the money? You, presumably, earned it through your hard work somehow. Did the homeless man earn your money? Did he earn any money?
No.
So even if you eating a candy when you're not hungry means that homeless man dies from hunger, the fact of the matter is that you earned your candy while he earned death.
It's a callous way to put it, but frankly it's true.
It's easy to say something like "if I were a multi billionaire I'd help all the homeless people just because I could", but there's a reason no billionaires actually bother beyond vague and ineffective charities (that siphon money from other people rather than their own bank accounts) - the reason being that it would cost a lot of money and ultimately solve nothing beyond put a few temporary financial band-aids on people who have proven that they cannot sustain a civilized existence.
