Let's celebrate all watches and what makes each one special.
The IWC Cousteau Divers uses the best from both sides of the colour circle: blue is the complementary colour of orange. Together with white indices it creates a super-contrast. Sealed by a compressor case this super-utilitarian tank is definitely approved for divers.
>>2584589
The new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Divers Chronograph is very close to this concept, though it should have had orange accents not yellow.
OC, since I just got my first watch,
Orient Ray
:3

Someone should post that new double balance AP RO even if it looks pretty silly.
>>2587273
Wait, we're supposed to say what makes each watch special? Well, the FPJourne resonance makes use of a very cool effect, where two clocks in sync and close enough to each other will help regulate one another.
Pictured is the back of my FPJourne Chronometre Bleu. It's almost entirely 18k gold (not plated) like the resonance. One thing that's neat here is that you can see the twin mainsprings (the power source) look separate from the escapement (the ticking heart). The connection has been routed under the dial where you can't see it!
I'm hoping for some watch nerds in here. Does anyone know of an affordable watch with an equation of time complication?
>>2587873
Do you want a bunch of calendar / time displays or must it be equation of time?
The cheapest equation of time I found was 26003BC.OO.D002CR from russia for 21k usd, but few would call that affordable.
Perhaps the Tissot Perpetual Calendar (T063.637.16.057.00) is an okay subsitute?
These threads are prety dead and I'm not sure why the guy who posts the most keeps making new ones besides to get to post photos that aren't resized.
There's an active thread on /g/ nearly all the time.
>>2587881
specifically equation of time. I love that function. Don't care much about calendars. Unfortunately equation of time is so far down on the list, it's usually only implemented after they run out of ideas, having calendars, moons and whatnot. And by then it costs two houses to get one
>>2587884
It's a very obscure complication.
There's not a very high demand for sidreal time or thermometer complications either. Thus they're expensive. Equation of time is /very/ mechanically complex as well. Give up on finding it for less than 20k the next few decades.
>>2587884
there's an app for it.
Having someone craft an accurate equation of time in a mechanical watch is a real accomplishment. It's a considered a grand complication.

Interesting, but pocketwatches are kind of their own league.
Considering the weld marks visible /through/ the endlinks, lume pip placement, general finishing quality, gold on the bezel and so on I think he needs to worry much about the value.
What's the prefered independent of the two posters in here other than me? Other than RM and FPJ.
>>2609903
One of the other posters reporting in!
Uh, besides, FPJ?
I assume smaller independent, so not Rolex, PP or AP...
Well, for dream watch, there's Roger W. Smith
>>2610930
Why RWS?
>>2584589
>>2584590
I don't know how many of you own "diving" watches, but would you ever bring them underwater with you in place of an actual dive computer? I don't see the point in having something on your wrist that only tells time versus something that can give you all dive data whenever you want it.
>>2611878
Neither of those are particularly good for diving, and those who dive wearing their watch tend to do so either too shallow to require a diving computer at all or as a backup to the diving computer.
>>2611798
Well, it's almost all hand-made by the one apprentice of George Daniels. Roger has actually improved on the co-axial escapement and it's just all done in this exquisite but totally not flashy way. An example of total fine-workmanship. A Roger W Smith watch is made to be serviceable two hundred years from now and it's one of the few real throwbacks to how things were done back in A.L.Breguet's day.
I just really like them (in pictures, at least!).
But, yeah, FPJ for sure. I guess someone else will name Voutilainen or Dufour, those are good answers, too. Heck, Habring2 is doing good stuff and their watches are as laudable in their own way for their own price point as any one could name.
A Nomos is fine, too.
>>2611878
Many serious divers use a dive watch as a back up in case their dive computer goes tits-up (which has happened).
>>2611897
There's Laurent Ferrier, Vianney Halter, H. Moser & Cie, Greubel & Forsey, Jaquet Droz, Emmanuel Bouchet, Romain Gauthier, Bovet, Arnold & Son, Van cleef & arpels, Credor (not really independent - part of Seiko group), Urban Jurgensen and the whole subcategory of futuristic machines from MB&F / HYT and alike in the high end stuff as well.
>>2606095
I was the same until I tried on a vintage Radiomir in a 47mm case and it fit perfectly. I get it now.
My favourite watch of Baselworld 2016. The world's thinnest minute repeater from a brand that's really coming up in the market.
All others from Rolex, Omega, Breitling and even Patek Philippe are just new colours/materials on existing models. Nothing to see there.
Also, I'm enjoying reading the discussions here around the need for modern dive watches and high-end independents etc. Keep the convos going!
>>2613047
I found the new Grand seiko SBGD001, Breguet Classique 7147 and Bulova curv rather interesting.
But it is a comparatively eventless year.
If we're discussing watches that only do something specific - be it thinness alone or combined with repeater, lightness or whatever >>Pour le Mérite<<, I prefer this, despite it not being the thinnest. Or anything JLC makes on their top end.
omega de ville hour vision blue
I just love this thing.
>>2612228
Jaquet Droz was acquired by Swatch Group. Arnold and Son is owned by Citizen.
But, yeah, a Credor Eichii II with a hand-painted dial in a traditional way, is pretty nice for sure.
>>261304
It may not be entirely new, but the Tudor Black Ba 36mm is my favorite of the show. It's just perfect.

>>2614976

>>2614962

>>2613183
I like the deville line the most of all omegas. Whoever is designing them has an eye for the classic, yet modern balance that I enjoy a lot.
>>2614546
You're right. I forgot.
Not sure if this is still valid, so few brands are independent..
>>2593799
I find that Hex screw odd to be there.
>>2606095
I'm not a watch guy but Panerais are my favorite to look at. Maybe because of how subtle in style they are.
>>2615297
A lot they are, including sleek in design. But subtle they are not when they're so damn huge.
I wish there was a sterile pam 337 homage or 40mm SLC dial homage. That's about as much as the design is worth since it's pretty much a fashion statement if you're not a 1940s Italian combat diver.
>>2615320
Yeah, they tend to be too big, hockey-pucks. But, one that fits well and its a nice masculine look, sure. It's the kind of thing where you really only need one, since the style is so consistent between models.
I'd like to see panerai evolve their style a bit, finding a classic look that didn't quite interbreed so much with previous models. It wouldn't be easy, and would represent a departure for them, but they need new blood.
Why is this better than a Credor?
>>2618782
Depends on the credor, but here's a good article:
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/with-the-seiko-eichi-ii-versus-dufour-and-ferrier
>>2584588
Versace. I honestly dont know what makes this special.
>>2620294
Basically, more pretty stuff of classic watchmaking and watch movement decorating to look at in the Dufour, plus Dufour is Dufour, so some interest in the personal craftmanship. If you knew the three guys who make your Credor, then that would tip it the other way, maybe, sorta, ish. But, it's subjective, so if movement hand decorating isn't your thing, but you love the way the eichi ii is hand-painted for the dial, then go for that.
New Oris 65 is making waves.
>>2620337
A different diver. Same hoodie.
>>2620298
But the Credors are hand finished by the microstudio who were trained by and still held in highest esteem by Dufour himself.
I was mainly referring to their minute repeaters.
Guess Credors aren't as traditional in the manufacturing - but they're still at least as traditional as Patek. https://youtu.be/ZLXTcwxip_Y?t=3m34s
The Eichi (2) isn't really a good example to compare to - most Credors aren't - but I find Dufours cases to be extremely.. simple. More out of ease than aesthetic simplicity as well.
>>2621346
Calling a Dufour case simple is probably his greatest compliment. Since he calls one of the models the Simplicity.
Credor is the apprentice to Dufour's Master.
>>2621542
That's a good way to put it.
Thoughts?

Fake watches are for fake people.
Meanwhile, a superior man of modest means wears a seiko 5 and holds his head high.
I think this might be a rose gold watch I could wear.
Other gold watches seem a bit too flashy. I've seen a rose gold royal oak and a rose gold Ulysse Nardin Marine something and they were both super eye-catching, which I don't quite want, either at work because it's distracting and outside because robbers or girls slipping drugs in my drink or something.
>>2647057
part 2: The new dial, which is made of rose gold. Dressier. I think the old dial might be more wearable everyday.
>>2647063
part 3:
Just saw this in person (along with the others). It's so nice. But, I already bought this watch in mother of pearl and it took all my savings for this sort of thing. Several years of this sort of thing savings. As seen here:
>>2622685
Still, the rose gold version is super nice. I'm not sure I could wear it around, though. The mother of pearl you can wear in the subway, nobody knows what it is or cares. Platinum and white gold are like that.
I think the old dial rose gold with a navy or brown strap would basically go anywhere as well. The rose gold dial with rose gold case (and all have a rose gold movement--so the last two are All Gold) watches are maybe a little less so.
What say you /hr/?
