The gayest branches are, to many people's surprise, marines and airforce. AF has all the cuties and marines have the muscle. Out of the hundreds of people I work with there's only about 5-10 gay/bi people. Never had any experiences because anyone worth their shit knows that military personnel that are easy to get are STD-ridden. Plus, I don't really go outside or talk to people, socially awkward as fuck.

Doing any military job comes down to this: "Choose your rate choose your fate". Meaning, you get a shit job and you're gonna hate life, but if you get a good job, like intel, not only are you going to love life but you're going to be paid a lot of money for jobs after you get out. So you can go marines and be intel and not be shot, but requires high ASVAB...which in the marines isn't very high. If you go navy go any CTT/R/M if you want to go on ships, or CTN/I if you want to stay on shore. CTN/I have 90+ ASVAB requirements but it's worth it. And no matter what you do, DO NOT GO NUKE, you will hate your life. Yea sure, your life is set up as a nuclear engineer once you get out, the 6k enlistment bonus sounds nice, but that's only after you complete the 2 year school and don't fail out, which is hard seeing as it's the hardest academic school in the DoD.

It all depends on what you want to do. I don't know as much about other branches but the navy is great thus far. Navy helps out it's people a great deal; it's about your future and what you can do with it, also a lot of family stuff. I would stay away from army just because they're really strict on shit. AF is definitely chill, you'll probably be able to go over seas in safe places. All the shit you hear about the AF being chair force is just joking...kinda, they're PT requirements aren't that strenuous but we're all in this together, so whenever I see another branch I treat em with respect. Marines are iffy, some of them are really cool guys and others are assholes, if you go marines, expect to live your life for the corps.
IDK man, ofc I'm biased, but I love the navy, it's given me schooling, all the benefits one could want, an amazing leadership, and I'll be making at least 50k starting after (if) I get out. Just don't let the recruiters screw you. My recruiters were amazing so that didn't happen. If you have around an 85 ASVAB then don't worry about it, you'll most likely be getting a good job. Go to MEPS anywhere from november to february as october is the start of the fiscal year and they're more likely to have more jobs. Research the jobs they offer you, and see what's for you.
One last thing, until you sign the dotted line, you can walk away at any moment, however, once you sign it, you're in. Don't make the recruiter pressure you into anything. I've got duty in the morning so I gotta go to sleep. I'll be checking this thread every once in a while.

I'm a medic and have had to treat people first hand because they don't wrap it. Daily life for me is pretty chill. I really haven't done much since I came to Campbell. I just sit in an office all day, doing BS "training." That or constantly prepare for layouts. When I was in Germany I worked in a clinic and actually had purpose. It's a lot like any other job for the most part, you just have to deal with Army shit on top of it. Going to the field, PT in the morning, etc. I'll be ETSing next year so it's w/e. I would definitely say the air force is the safest. They get all the good stuff and have everything, more or less, the easiest with regard to all military shit that the people in power wanna make you do.
I've found that most of the navy gay guys I've met are so so so super fucking boring. The intel guys for all the nerd rates seem to be pretty fun, but anyone else I've met sucks. They do the same shit every weekend.

If you're just looking to join the military, I would go with the AF. Like others have said the AF typically have nicer lives. My recruiter lied to me, but I'm not heart broken over it. I've done three years so far and I'm just waiting to get out. I'm sure it all depends on your job and where you are positioned.

I know with the Navy, not sure about AF, that the CT rates (and another?) has something called ATF which gets you promoted super quick. You have people that haven't even been in 2 years and they just got E-5. Problem with ATF is that it extends a normal 4 year contract to 6 years, but totally worth it.

Okay, so I just watched Burning Blue, a movie about a guy who is gay in the Navy. Without too many spoilers, I will just say I am pissed at the ending. As a 2013 movie, it's time and place is before Obama's repeal on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", but after Clinton tried to end indiscriminate persecution of LGBT members.
To get to the crux of my issue my questions are:
1.) How far does "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" protect a person? (It basically sounds as though if you don't say anything, you're fine. If you do, don't be surprised by the events that follow. In other words, it's basically a verbal warning to avoid bias against yourself.)
2.) Is "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" still the norm for the armed services? (Would one still be left to decide the fate of their own sexuality whether they say their orientation?)
3.) And finally, what are the unwritten rules of sexual orientation for the armed services? (Rather broad, and probably supersedes either of the former questions but damn. This movie hit me in the feels and I can't imagine the bs one would have to go through.)
