So what if the Japanese ended up getting the aircraft carriers as well and it all went perfectly, would it have been enough to knock USA out of the war?
>>
>>996414
no it would have just taken a little longer

you weren't knocking the USA out of the war by taking out a few carriers
>>
Oh my fuck, get lost with this thread. You make it everyday and the answer won't ever change. NO Fuck off!!

USA could only have lost that war like it lost in Vietnam, because national unrest.
But after an attack like that it would never have had to deal with that kind of unrest.
>>
>>996414
Any carrier they hit would've been raised and repaired.
>>
>>996497
This
Most of the BBs hit in Pearl were repaired and ready for action in a few years.

On a related note, what did the Japanese hope to accomplish attacking America in the first place? Where they just acting as a distraction or did they sincerely think they could beat, let alone conquer America? Maybe we just seemed like China 2.0 at the time and our ability to actually fight back was vastly underestimated?

America was heavily involved in Europe, and it was reasonable to believe that the US and Britain wouldn't divert resources to fight a war in the Pacific, especially if Japan took away their forward bases and crippled their fleets.

After the "roaring 20s" and the "gilded age", authoritarian conservative countries like Japan saw the US as a nation of degenerates dancing to nigger music. They thought that democracy made us weak, and that public opinion would quickly give up on war. They figured the US would have no stomach for a long and brutal war, so they attempted to knock out our carriers and draw us into a war that would be fought in deep tropical jungles. They thought if they could do that, the US would quickly tap out and make concessions.
>>
>>996782
Their plan was to bleed the Anericans dry until we suffer such horrific casualties the public demands an end to the war which would have to come on Japan's terms.
Of course that plan kind of failed since the average jap had poor training, bad equipment, and nonexistant support. If they'd been killing at a 10-1 rate instead of dying at one they might have had a chance.

This is some third-grade tier history. Go educate yourselves before posting.
First of all, Japanese plan was never centered on infantry action in the jungles. It was going to be a naval war, and their war plans reflected that reality. Second, Japan did not in any way think of the US as a country unwilling to fight. Their plan was predicated on a massive and prompt counterattack by the American navy.
>>
>>997214
They expected the US to fight, and win, but they planned to make it arduous and bloody and make us pay disproportionately for every inch of the tropics we retook.
And to seek a decisive naval engagement, yes.

The general plan was to kill a bunch of Americans and make the war give us unsustainable losses.
>>
>>997224
No, they planned to destroy the US fleet. Their plan wasn't predicated on jungle warfare in the islands. Only way the war would reach that point is if the IJN was defeated. At that point, Japan has basically lost. Once the IJN was in fact defeated, and all they could do was throw up a hail mary, then that's what they did. But that was never their plan leading up to Pearl Harbor.
>>
>>997236
Ya the idea was that they could defeat the Pacific fleet quickly before the atlantic fleet could make it to the pacific and join forces. Obvi they fucked that whole thing up massively. But ya they never though they could conquer America which is why they didn't invade hawaii just attack it.
>>
>>996782
>On a related note, what did the Japanese hope to accomplish attacking America in the first place?
Combination of factors.

The more concrete plan was to effectively neutralize the US fleet in the Pacific, giving the IJN freedom to expand across the Pacific.

From there, the endgame wasn't exactly clear. The idea seemed to be that the Japanese were hoping the Allied powers wouldn't have the resources or morale to really care enough to take back everything they'd lost.

Of course, you did have many who genuinely believed that the IJA/IJN could win the war, despite just about every projection saying otherwise. The wars with Russia and China at the turn of the century had ingrained into the Japanese a feeling that they couldn't possibly lose, even against impossible odds. That mentality carried on into the '30s, with the Japanese often making major strategic decisions not with a plan for how they're going to execute their goals, but merely with the confidence that everything will always go their way.
