Can we all agree that WW1 is the most depressing time period in history?
I wish all the empires, monoarchies and old world order weren't destroyed.
>WW1 was literally a family disagreement
>>995417
pffff....no. big reason we run everything.
Agreed.
I read on some British website, about one soldiers account of the war that was just terrifying.
He joined a little late in the war, stabbed a few wounded germans with his bayonet, walked a few hundred yards with his battalion (about a 1000 men) to another trench, and was hit by german arty. A few seconds later he was buried alive, then dug himself out using another's severed leg as a implemented shovel. made it back to his trench after almost being shot by his own men. Later found out his entire battalion was wiped off the face of the earth.
He was shipped to a hospital for 'shell shock', for obvious reasons, but somehow mentally recovered.

Ww1 is kinda overshadowed by ww2 because of the latter's size. But it's so bizarre. men taught to fight with swords went and died in trenches, on hellscapes of destroyed land which resemble heavy metal cover art. In the air biplanes are rattling around: wizzing bullets in a slap fight of barely trained boys with 5 day life expectancies.
Rickety tanks advance briefly fighting over mud. And most die without ceremony from random mortars, leaving chunks for decoration and rats food.
>>1001299
It was a synonym for the Ottomans back then.
>>997964
You mean the French Revolution
The thought of getting stuck in the mud at paeschendael with your comrades and sometimes even enemy soldiers unable to pull you out despite of trying, leaving you to eventually drown in it is fucking horrifying to me. Christ, your fellow and enemy soldiers would literally shoot you out of mercy.
Additionally whilst the Germans did commit some atrocities, there really wasn't the same type of good vs bad guys as there was in WW2. Instead it was just the culmination of centuries of European conflict
>>995417

I'm no expert but I'd guess it was sort of a revenge or justification thing. People want their suffering to have meaning, they want a narrative and villain. WWI was mostly just senseless horror and I'd bet a lot of vet couldn't live with that. they probably wanted someone to blame and get back at for all the shit they had to go through.

People seem to like to think messengers weren't 'real soldiers' when the reality is the role of messenger in that war was fucking deadly.
You're the poor asshole who actually has to get up and run back and fourth relaying information when things go to shit and communication wires get cut. That is exactly the time you don't want to be a guy running back and fourth, runners got mowed down all the damn time.
You could never point and shoot a gun once in that war and still require adamantium balls to do your job. Hitler being a shitty guy doesn't automatically by default make him a shitty soldier.
>>1002572
It's a tumblrism

The messenger's job was to run between the trenches relaying orders. This was one of the most dangerous jobs around since people had to run through enemy fire.
>>1002509
The average working class schmuck probably didn't know much about politics and didn't have a lot of opportunities to learn. He might read the newspaper but you can only learn so much from that. Even today when we have information readily available most people are more concerned with doing their jobs and relaxing when they get home. When your trying to support your family in a failing economy you don't want to spend a good deal of your time figuring out how politics work.
We also have the benefit of being able to look back from a comfortable point in history. It's much harder to navigate a huge political clusterfuck as it happens.

No, it was William II. Bismarck was careful in his actions, only having a war happen when he knew it would be quick, relatively painless, and beneficial to Germany. He even set up a network of treaties that would've made an pan-European war impossible.
Then William II comes to power, decides he's too good for helpers, throws Bismarck out, trashes all his treaties, ruins all of his plans, and sends Europe spiraling towards WWI.
So basically, every single modern problem can be blamed on Wilhelm. I wish we could bring him back to life so we could all collectively beat the shit out of him.

In WW2 memoirs of Pacific vets they -all- write about how seeing their own dead turn black and begin to decompose because of the heat during heavy fighting when bodies couldn't be retrieved really fucked with them mentally.
WW1 is the only war I know of where, because of no man's land, bodies were unable to be retrieved and allowed to decompose to skeletal remains. I imagine the effect is worse.

Ww1 hade the Christmas truce so I would say you are wrong
Personally for me, the collapse of the USSR into Stalinism and brutal conservatism is one of the most depressing things in history.
I would be really interested to see what Soviet culture would have turned into if Stalin didn't repress the Bolshevik Avant Garde.
Tatlin tower not being built is the worlds biggest crime against architecture.
Revolutionary Soviet art and architecture is aesthetic as fuck.
>>1006367
The truces on Christmas 1914 caused a fuckhueg crackdown afterwards, nothing on that scale happened for the rest of the war. In Storm of Steel, Ernst Junger wrote that English snipers would shot down a christmas tree that his men put on a parapet. Groups of men that went to fraternize with the enemy during holidays would usually be captured.
>>1002521
I think its the language jaa
>>1004910
The fact that you would.compare anything with stalingrad makes me think you dont know what the fuck you are talking about
Storming pavlovs house was nothing like storming a trench, falling back to the reserve trenches and eating a hot meal was nothing like crawling out of a basment window and digging up frozen potatoes from the yard whike snipers and machinegunners try and take pot shots at you beacuse there is nothing els to eat, having to repel attackers with rocks and chairs was nothing like sitting in a trench with a rifle
Losing and retaking the train station 14 times in one day was nothing like figthing for one trench over the course of weeks
>>1006367
>everyday the handle on the human meat grinder turns

>lol it's cool because we played soccer one time
>>1006378
And ww2 hade what exactly that even comes close to the Christmas truce?
It dosent really matter what happened after the truce just the fact that people who where trying to kill eachother a few hours ago would bring food and tables into the no mans land and share a meal together then enjoy a game of football makes ww1 imo alot more civil then ww2
>>1006468
Lol faggot you where the one who started talking about manners
And yes you need alot more manners to play a football game with your enemy then you need to refrain from using chemicals

That conflict also had the displeasure of the large scale involvement of civilians. The Eastern Front was less of a war and more of a somewhat organized alcohol-fueled orgy of death and destruction across a front over 2000 miles and taking over 30 million lives. It was like the Viking raids of the Middle Ages, except on a massive scale.
WW1 makes me legitimately depressed thinking about it. It may be the single worst thing to happen in all of human history.
