Same could be said for the 300 spartans. Fought a defensive war, but fought bravely against an invading force, and they're hailed as heroes.
Hell, even Scipio Africanus, the man who fought Hannibal, is seen as a hero of the Roman people. And while the Romans were conquerors and arseholes, the battle of Zama saw Scipio as a hero amongst the ancient world.
