Germans baffle me so.

How can a race of writers, scientiests, artists, composers and thinkers be so desperate to be soldiers that they destroy everything good about their culture?
>>
>>1149430

Geography. One does not occupy a central position without hardening or dying.
>>
>>1149409
Frederick fought against three European great powers at the same time operating from his pretty much indefensible and poor backwater state and he didn't just survive the whole thing but came out of it larger than before - a feat few others could have repeated. What allowed him to do this was his father's great army, which was among the most capable in Europe at the time (though most of the time outnumbered around 2 : 1) and his military genius, which he most certainly possessed - with both Napoleon or Clausewitz agreed on. In that regard, he well deserves to be called 'the Great'.
>>
>>1149475
This
With every great victory you have 7 defeats. Its how the world works. History is written by the victors but few are called "Great".
>>
>>1149475
Alexander faced worse odds and came out a 100 times better.

Yet both are called "the Great".
>>
Friedrich, like Peter, is mainly called "the Great" because secularists thought they were great. Mason practically creamed themselves when Napoleon came around though.
>>
>>1149501

Actually he was never called "great." He is properly named Mega Alexander. Some translators decided to use the word "great," despite mega already being a word in English.
>>
>>1149409
Don't talk shit about Frederick.

The absolute madman carried Britain's ass against the entirety of Europe to a net victory in the Seven Years' War. He was a brilliant tactician and the whole kingdom loved him.

>>1149501
You have no clue what you're talking about.
>>
>>1149409

insidious
petty
Presumptious
cowardly.
>>
>>1149517
Probably because Mega Alexander sound like a fucking godzilla monster or some shit.
>>
>>1149779

Now you're getting the picture. Now you understand just how great he really was.

Remember this is a culture that invented titans.

No man deserves the title 'the Great' because it's an inherently misogynistic title that is only EVER used for male leaders (with the one exception of Catherine the Great). Because it's 2016, we need to do away with such outdated, sexist nomenclature and begin engaging with the modern world.

Plus, Frederick was a white man and Alexander was bad at empire building, so neither should hold the title 'the Great' even if it wasn't a misogynist epithet.

>luck was all that Frederick II had

You're being very historically disingenuous. Two strokes of luck are nice but saying that discounts his military campaign is rather vacuous.
>>

>The absolute madman carried Britain's ass against the entirety of Europe to a net victory in the Seven Years' War.

Maybe you should educate yourself on the topic, you sound like you learned about the 7 years war by reading the battle box on wiki

Britain did jackshit in Europe, they were busy sending all their forces to North America in order to outnumber the French and steal their colony while they were busy against Prussia in Europe
And the Prussian "victory" in Europe was anything but "neat"
It was an act of mercy from Russia
>>
>>1150530
>victory in quotes
Surviving a defensive war with territorial integrity intact is victory.

>not great
>>
>>1149409
Catherine the Great comes to mind because the title was purely artificial. She was called like that when she was alive and despite being a strong political player didn't improve the fate of Russian people. And had a totally embarassing death (no, it's not related to the horse myth).

Didn't lose 80% or take that long to recover.

>barely expanded his borders
Practically multiplied Prussia's size

>never took his opponents' capital
So?

>saved once by bribery and once by Russian mercy
Russian casualties were the heavy to attack Berlin, plus Prince Henry's undefeated army could attack at any moment.

>>

Since OP is probably Polish, he should consider that Casimir the Great never won any victories, but is great for bringing in a peaceful and prosperous era. Frederick is not only a great military leader, but he turned Prussia into a great power over all. He contributed greatly to arts and science, architecture, food supplying. universities, army reforms, etc.

>After the Battle of Kunersdorf, Frederick thought Prussia faced certain defeat. He wrote that it was "a cruel reverse! I shall not survive it. I think everything is lost. Adieu pour jamais".[2] Prussia had lost 19,000 soldiers and was left with 18,000.

>During the war the Prussians had lost 120 generals, 1,500 officers (out of 5,500) and over 100,000 men.
>>
>>1149487
>With every great victory you have 7 defeats.

>>
>>1150221
You are a moron.
Referring to an historical personage as "great" has no relation to any idea of misogyny or pathetic identity politics.

The modern world is an era where we can access information at incredible speeds.

3rd wave feminists are akin to authoritarian government.

Fuck a girl and grow up.

>>
>>1150530
That's what I've been saying. Britain started the war and put all the weight on Frederick to bail them out in Europe. Complaining that he never expanded his territory in a defensive war makes it any less of a victory is bullshit moving of the goalposts.

I'll be honest with you all: most of the stuff I know about Suleiman is form Extra History a few weeks back. And from what I saw, I wasn't all that impressed.
Lost thousands of troops in sometimes futile sieges, failed to properly push into Europe, and killed off his most competent heir.
Why is he called the 'magnificent'?
>>
>>1156715
His reign saw the empire's golden age and zenith of power. There's a reason the empire went to shit when he died.

Alexander had to abandon his campaign because of mutiny, died/got murdered a few years later and his empire fell apart almost instantly.
