I really like movies about WWII operations. The best ones made no more than 30 years after the war.
The Longest Day
Patton
A Bridge Too Far
Battle of Britain
Tora! Tora! Tora!

Not sure about Midway. In any case I think that's it. There are movies that feature other large campaigns like Stalingrad but I meant a specific kind of movie with real characters, generals moving forces on the map. You know the kind. I hope Dunkirk revives the trend.
What else could they make? Monte Cassino? Tobruk?

Lots of movies about the Bolshevik revolution. Are those apologist movies? Because any movie that tries to show the revolution as "not so different" is a missed cause.

To elaborate a little:
>Andrei Rublev
Cinematic masterpiece and required viewing for any cinephile.
It follows the life of Andrei Rublev, the greatest Russian icons painter that lived in 14th century Russia. It depicts a very dark and almost surreal picture of the harsh place that was 14th century Russia.
>Back to 1942
A pretty great, if recent Chinese Epic. It details the flight of a family of Chinese civilians from the war torn provinces to the apparent safety of the eastern interior. As we see the bourgeois family descend further and further into poverty and famine we get a glimpse in the various every day epics that populated the China of 1942, be it a fervent monk's crusade, the corrupted 12th Warzone Mobile Court or fucking Adrien Brody.
I really recommend it.
>Barry Lyndon
It's mainstream so just google it.
>Joyeux Noel
Heartwarming story taking place on the front lines in Northern France on Christmas 1914. Based on a true story.
>Marketa Lazarova
In medieval Bohemia, no one is safe from bandits of the highways
>The Gospel according to ST. Matthew
Vaticancore
>Waterloo
Perhaps the most epic film ever filmed. During the making of the movie, the director was in command of the 4th largest army in Europe as the Soviet Army lent him 2 divisions and several specialist units to use as standins for the reenactment of Waterloo.
Also immensely quotable.
>Alexander Nevsky
Almost nil in actual historical value, but one of the pinnacles of Soviet Filmmaking. Also Prokofiev wrote the soundtrack(!)
>Battleship Potemkin
Another propaganda movie, but one of the cornerstones of the cinema world. Again required viewing if you want to pretend to be a cinephile.
>Ordet
Danish movie about a vicar in the 30's and a moral dilemma. More /vaticancore/

Stuff that ain't on the pic:
>Indigenes
Great French movie about the enlisted Algerians serving the FFL during Operation Dragoon. In some ways the French Saving Private Ryan. Really good movie despite what /pol/ says.

Furher on, there's also
>die Wälder sind noch Grün
A quite decent slovene-austrian production for its (very) limited budget. It tells the story of an isolated Austrian outpost on the Isonzo front.
Questions are asked as an old world dies and a new generation, born from the savagery of the first global conflict is born.
>>
>>963808
There are a few more
>Na svoji zemlji
First real slovene movie. It was released in 1948 and is obviously a partizan movie (the first in a long line) about the glorious liberation of motherland from fascist pigs.
It's notable because it set the standard for slovene filmmaking still followed today. It's bleak, introspective, over dramatic and looks like something Ibsen would write.

Reminder that Barry Lyndon is a fucking masterpiece and in terms of the quality of the film (not historical accuracy) it's the best one. Kubrick modified cameras using NASA technology so that he could film by candle light and the natural light of the old buildings he filmed in. The entire thing looks like a painting.

>>963818
Another very good one is
>The Border Post (Karaula)
It's a (sadly) pretty realistic depictions of the state of the Yugoslav People's Army in the late 80's. Prepare to laugh and cry at systematic power abuse and Yugoslav nonchalance. A good slap in the face to Yugonostaligcs.

Here's a sample, really fun movie.
Also in the Yugoslav repertoire, there's
>See You in the Next War
It's a great Yugoslav (mainly Slovene) production based on the critically acclaimed Slovene novel "Menuet za kitaro". In the 70's in a Spanish holidays resort, a former Slovene Partizan and a former Wehrmacht soldier, that were bitter enemies during the war, meet. They reflect on their memories. In the backdrop the movie asks itself what is the role of an intellectual during war time.

Battle of Britain is the same way. These movies are amazing considering the spectacle of them. All those planes and explosions and what not. I know people tend to look down on action scenes as trashy, but the amount of detail and the way they choreographed all these planes and battles scenes is a work of art.

highly recommend both, although I liked Tora Tora Tora a bit more. The German side in BoB is a bit flat. Still a great epic

Since Adams lived out the rest of his life as any other noble in Japan, its likely that he did eventually take a Japanese wife, but the miseries has nothing to do with that.

The miniseries is filmed a bit like any other 70's production (since it was in production a while before release in 1980), but its plot is unique. It's not Avatar with Japs like The Last Samurai was.

Fairly accurate in terms of setting, as far as I know.
Has
-Early Georgian debauchery
-poofy Louie European nobles
-warfare being a slog of walking for miles and then walking into gunfire
-duels being shitty
I don't know how accurate it is to the book. There was a weird fad of early modern authors writing the entire lives of their protagonists in brick-sized novels.

>Mongol
It's so boring though, and focuses on such a small and boring part of his life.
Where I think we've explored least in terms of potential is a horror movie about the mongols.
Imagine seeing it from a european/middle eastern POV, then have us follow people who have their town raided, have our protagonist be in the middle of things and barely make it out of situations like the mass executions, show how even when you hide and manage to remain hidden in a town, they then return to the town to dig out any survivors or ppl that hid themselves to finish them off.
Show how maybe he gets spared because the protagonist shows his usefulness as an engineer or the like, but then has to watch how his friends and the people of his town be chained up and be used as meatshields in the front, show how the mongols use their catapults to send in dead and rotting animals.

So much potential for good horror, and for the most part it would all be historically accurate.

Vouching for Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai. They can be wrong about some of the historical details but I'm pretty sure they're essential /his/torical cinema at this point.

I can also vouch for The Great Raid, which, as far as I know, is historically accurate, even if it's just a decent film.

Beasts of No Nation was mentioned by another anon too. It's a good film about West African child soldiers.

Vouching for The Killing Fields which is about one man's experience under the Khmer Rouge. Accurate as far as I can tell, and the main actor himself was a Khmer Rouge survivor.
