He was a rabid anti-Catholic who claimed that evil Christianity destroyed Rome and plunged the world into a thousand years of Dark Ages, a view universally rejected by any serious historians today.

>Religious precepts are easily obeyed which indulge and sanctify the natural inclinations of their votaries; but the pure and genuine influence of Christianity may be traced in its beneficial, though imperfect, effects on the barbarian proselytes of the North. If the decline of the Roman empire was hastened by the conversion of Constantine, his victorious religion broke the violence of the fall, and mollified the ferocious temper of the conquerors
Even if we say you're 100$ correct on that point, does this disqualify the rest of the book? It utilizes plenty of primary sources, the records of the Church of the time were far less objective and reacted rabidly to criticism from anyone, like Gibbon.

>who claimed that evil Christianity destroyed Rome
Its true though, christianity removed emperor worship and provided no incentive to keep the "worldly" empire going.
>rejected by any serious historians today
Every history of rome is based on gibbons work, because to used the primary sources
Aside from his anti-clerical bias, his historical prose is unmatched and he still had some things to contribute.
Though the idea of Christianity destroying the Empire itself is bullshit because:
>How come the Christian East survived just fine until Islam?
>How come there were plenty of Christian Empires afterward that worked fine on less infrastructure?
>It was the church that performed the basic functions of the Roman Government after it fell, effectively continuing the Roman tradition parallel to the 'Barbarian' Kings.

Give people power and wealth and they'll fight to protect it. Do you really think the Roman army were fighting for God Emperor Augustus when madmen and dribbling cuckholds wore the purple?
