Why do people overrate Cleopatra as some glamorous woman who could do no wrong and was waited on hand and foot when she was infact ugly as sin, the product and instigator of incest, a mathematician and philosopher, and ultimately a backstabbing murderer? She wasn't even Egyptian.

Egyptology

Literal worst branch of social sciences, also British (and consequently American) obsession with Egyptology in the 19th-20th centuries.

She looked plain but ok.

She's overrated because she's the only Egyptian ruler that appears in classical (Roman) history and thus made it into the Western canon, and she was further popularised as a romantic figure by Shakespeare's play Antony and Cleopatra.

>>957196
Completely wrong. Cleopatra embodies Egypt as it was seen before Egyptology came along to correct that prejudice.
>>
Because she seduced Julius Caesar, she must have been byootiful.

But really, she was quite impressive. Her family had been stagnant and mediocre pretty much immediately after Alexander the great doled out his conquered lands. None of the 15+ Pharaohs before her ever learned the language of the land they ruled.

She was multilingual and had true charm to make up for her ugly ass face, and when people hear of historical records of people's remarks on how charismatic and "attractive" she was, they misunderstand it as all visual.

But seriously, planning out getting knocked up by the most powerful man in the world and trying to catapult that leverage baby into a throne he'd never seen was a helluva plan.
How many people have had to explain that the Cleo we all know and love was the fucking 7th one of her name in her family?

WTF, Ptolemaic Egypt was the greatest Hellenistic kingdom, prosperous, and the most important centre of science and culture of its time. Cleopatra VII wasn't even the best ruler named Cleopatra, she's only famous because of her role in Roman history and for being the last pharaoh, meaning she's responsible for the end of a 3000 year old empire.

Actually, considering their supposed sexual history, to seduce the likes of Caesar and Anthony you just need to be married to a powerful man and breathing, respectively.

You mean besides the fact that she seduced the strongest man in the world...

Twice?

As in "two different men"?

Do you think she could have done that if she was some butt-ugly inbred?

>She wasn't even Egyptian.
She was their Greek ruling class. She wasn't "ugly", she was normalfag. What made people like her was her natural charisma.

Pic related. HBO did her great justice in Rome

>butt-ugly inbred
power is sexy. she had enough power to balance it out
>>
>>960844
I don't doubt her charisma, but the fact that she had claim to one of the wealthiest kingdoms probably didn't hurt in her seduction.
>>
>>960844
>seduced

you sure it wasn't realpolitik? Egypt was quite powerful at the time, so no wonder Roman leaders tried to get her as an ally.
>>
>>960903
Egypt was a client state in all but name to Rome. Egypt would have been annexed long ago by Antiochus IV if it hadn't been for Rome.
>>
>>960937
Just imagine what you could do with Egyptian corn. You could make yourself the patron of all the plebs in Rome.

You're ugly as sin. Back in the day it was totally cool to f your brother.
>>
>>960903
It was more than realpolitik. Cleopatra was the severe underdog in her fight against her brother/husband. Lucky for her, she managed to enrapture one of history's greatest military geniuses and he crushed Ptolemy's army despite being massively outnumbered (which for him was par for course)
