Catholicism.
The one true religion, inspired a entire civilization's greatest works of architecture and art.
Even though modern Catholic churches today have been wreckovated to look more Protestant, there are still a lot out there that are just simply breathtaking.
This is Hōryū-ji, also of Buddhism
>>947403
In contrast to the exterior, the interior is very smooth, with very nice stain-glass windows that cast light on the giant chamber.

Shit religion.
Great churches.
I can't think of another building style before the age of mass produced iron and steel that I like nearly as much as gothic cathedrals.

I first saw it on my first trip out of the USA when I was 17, middle of the night, no one around. First thing I saw walking out of the metro station. I just sat there in my duffel bag and just stared at it. As a history and architecture fan I was very moved seeing it in person

Not really representative of good aesthetics. The Paul VI Entrance Hall in general is fucking hideous
The thing with Catholicism is that their aesthetics are either 10/10 raise-your-eyes-towards-the-heavens-tier or sterile and soulless shit like this

Moor architecture is quite amazing
>>950868
This. I think that the Moors deserved to have a "revival" WAY more than Gothic did. Imagine the powerful symbolism of a Moorish skyscraper, a real dedication to the labor and engineering might of collective man. Gothic skyscrapers just kind of miss the point of the style, which was to emulate height without being able to actually make something huge. Once you make a skyscraper it loses a lot of the meaning. It's like the difference between a slice of cake and the whole thing.
Personally my favorite religious style is Byzantine Revival because it can take advantage of the power of industry to create meaning relevant to the architectural style.
Not to sound like an edgy fedora-tipper here, but don't these decadent architectural styles fly in the face of Jesus' ascetic message?
>use engineering accomplishments of pagan Romans
>claim Christianity should have credit for it
wew
>>951345
If you haven't noticed by now, Christians pride themselves by removing themselves as far away from the message of their holy book as possible, because after all, how could capitalism continue to function if you actually took Jesus' word?
>>951345
The last Christian died on the cross
>>951390
How does that make sense as a criticism? The question concerns who uses the style, not necessarily who developed it.
Also ancient cultures don't take the credit for developments that occurred in other cultures, even the new idea is rooted in their inventions.
>>951417
>>951345
In the case of Christians I think they are far gone enough that they get a pass. It is worth appreciating that all of these styles came into existence because of the need to strike strong emotions- in many ways unique to Christianity- into anyone entering their buildings. So I would argue that they sre "Christian," at least insomuch as thry adopt some Christian values and define the faith.
>>951515
Well, the third commandment literally says that you can't make any graven images, and that's conspicuously never mentioned anymore by any established Church, or when it is mentioned, they try to explain it away by some bullshit theology.
>>951468
It's a criticism of anyone who thinks their religion deserves credit for the culture and technology they appropriated. If you don't think that then there isn't a problem.
>>951417

Quit arguing and just keep posting architectural photos you autists, that's not the point of this thread
>>951528
I agree entirely. My point is just that enough of the sects of Christianity have deviated from the bible that it's a bit of a non-point to mention their gaudy architecture. The buildings do, however, represent something distinctly Christian, and for the purposes of this thread I think that's all that really matters.
>>951569
This is the internet you sperg. You can't have a thread in the periphery of religion, and not have it derail to religion.

Yeah. Jesus didn't tell every christian to get rid of all their money. Just one young rich Jewish ruler.

Abraham was rich.

Mediterranean work ethics, ladies and gentlemen. This would be finished by 20 years in Germany.
>>951808

Because of some theological flapdoodle, that suits them because they like their idols.
I mean, Catholics literally *pray* to the statues of saints, if that's not idolatry, than what is?
Face it, they have just found a justification for continuing to do something that they know is wrong, but they want to have e.g cafeteria Catholics.
Not impressive.

I'll have to give it to Cucktolicism. But it is more due to the European spirit than an something intrinsical to the religion. See Pagan Greece, Rome, Lascaux cave paintings, etc. for proof. In short, everything Europeans do is god-like.

>but don't these decadent architectural styles fly in the face of Jesus' ascetic message?
The Temple of Jerusalem built by Herod was massive and extravagant. Yet, Christ taught within its walls, and even praised a women for giving away a great portion of her wealth towards its collections. This gives an implicit acceptance and condoning of building mighty Temples in the name of God. Secondly, in the Old Testament it is God who seeks to have the Ark built to house his Commandments, which was not exactly cheap, and it was God who sought to have the First Temple built.
>>950734
